Can outtakes videos be ignored by the spell checker? Pretty much all of the misspellings in those are intentional because the speaker interrupts a word or mispronounces it.

You should add this in suggestions. It would be a good idea for an admin feature, to be able to run the spell checker on the video once, change anything that needs it, and then blanket mark the rest of the video as ok. Sci show has it too, but mostly with scientific names or terms that the dictionary doesn't recognize.

I should probably do something about that. Adding functionality based on categories is a little tricky (which is why I'm looking into, but hesitant about, the suggestion to assign transcript priorities based on category).

Another idea may be just having a button that says "Ignore all misspellings for this video." This would also come in handy for foreign language situations. There are a couple Miscellaneous videos where John is visiting Germany or The Netherlands, and those get transcribed directly into German/Dutch/etc. So it could be useful in those situations as well to have a button to remove all flagged misspellings from the spell checker.

Freakazette's suggestion is kind of a middle ground, so that's another good option.

The ignore all thing would def not have to be based on category. It would be super useful not just on outtakes but also in the gaming videos and sci show and crashcourse. Honestly, most vids have some stumbling and gibberish, just to a lesser extent.

And changing priority a little based on category was just an idea. It sounds like it probably wouldn't be worth the work to code it. I just didn't like the idea of people having to ignore the "priorities" to get to videos they consider more important (or maybe just more fun/easier to transcribe? I do that.) but now it seems like everyone's got their own system to which videos they work on, and I think that's ok.

What's the policy for foreign-language words in the site dictionary? For example, in CC World History #31, John talks about the colonial Latin America process of "gracias al sacar", and both "gracias" and "sacar" show up in the Transcript misspellings section. Should these words be ignored or added to the dictionary?

I don't know if there's an official policy. The rule of thumb I've been using is to add it to the dictionary if it's an actual word and will be used several times and possibly in other videos. If it's nonsense or only used once, I mark it as ignore.

For most foreign words, I'd say ignore them. But gracias (not sure about sacar) is a pretty common loan word in English, so it's fine to add that to the dictionary. One thing about adding foreign words: just make sure to add the correct spelling. "Gracias" is simple, but anything with umlauts, accents, etc. should include those.

That said, Freakazette's standard is basically what I've told people to use in the past.

Hey I'm pretty new and I had a few questions about transcribing. Can't really find a Q and A or anything so I'll just ask here.

1. Many of the videos, like scishow and crashcourse, have little snippets where the spoken text also appears onscreen. Should this text still be transcribed?

2. I've noticed that many for many videos the auto captions are actually half accurate. Is there an easy way to start with the auto generated text and just clean it up? (copying and pasting has wierd formatting that takes just as long to fix as typing the whole thing)

3. Is this wiki still being used a lot or should I try to transcribe directly to youtube? Most of the videos that I was looking at didn't appear to have an edit feature...

1. It's nice if you include it, but it's not necessary, and I think most transcripts don't at the moment.

2. Unfortunately not. I don't think YouTube allows you to download the auto-generated captions. However, Valerie provides the script for some videos. In those cases, she adds the script, and it's just a matter of watching through the video to make sure they stay on-script and make any corrections as needed.

3. Translating is better done on YouTube, but transcribing should be done here. Transcribing here makes the transcripts searchable, and makes it easier to manage which videos are complete and which still need work. Most of the wiki's traffic actually comes from teachers linking to videos/categories (especially Crash Course World History), and that'll probably just increase as Crash Course expands.

Actually, I did think of one more question. Are the trascripts used primarily to consult without the video or to make captions? It makes a difference for what sounds/actions I include.

For CrashCourse and SciShow, transcripts are used for both purposes, but probably more often as reference.

For other channels, it's mostly about making captions.

I think it's a good idea to include on-screen text in the transcription. If I'm reading along while listening to a video, I think I'd prefer being able to continue reading a quote or something in the transcription, instead of switching to reading the video and then back.

How do we decide which channels are added to the wiki? Is it if one of the Greens produce the show? This question came up since the launch of Cereal Time which Hank helps to produce.

That's a good question, and I was thinking the same thing when Hank announced that. There aren't consistent criteria for that right now. It's something like "channels Hank & John own, regularly take part in, or substantially contribute to." Another criteria might be "managed by EcoGeek/DFTBA employees," since that makes it more likely that the transcripts will be used as captions.

At first I was against adding it, because I don't know what his role as "executive producer" entails. Did he come up with the idea? Does he come up with video ideas for the channel? Or does he simply fund it and promote it?

So I don't know. Anyone else have input on whether Cereal Time should be added?

I don't think he has any less say in Cereal Time than he did with LBD or How to adult, both of which are transcribed on this wiki.

Personally the only reason I can see not to is that it's ~20 minutes of video every weekday which adds a lot of work, but if there are enough people to keep up then there's no reason not to add them.

Site Updates 2015/6/13

Okay, lots of things over the past few weeks or so.

  • Podcasts from Soundcloud are now on the wiki. These are added automatically, like the videos, and can be transcribed like normal. They're not integrated everywhere yet (they won't show up in your User Edit history, in the search results, and some other places). That's all a work-in-progress.
  • Split Transcripts are more of a thing now. This is the feature that splits a transcript into small chunks that can be transcribed by multiple users simultaneously.
  • The search box now uses an HTML5 placeholder. The thing where it says "Search..." which goes away when you click in the box used to be javascript. HTML5 should work a lot better for that.
  • I've been working on email. It was partially broken for a while, then I completely broke, now it seems to be working fairly well.
  • Added a Suggestions page. Post your own suggestions for how to improve the site, or upvote/downvote/comment on others' suggestions.
  • Redesigned some of the nav. There's now a sub-nav on the Videos dropdown. The Random Video link has been moved there. The user nav (with "discuss," "transcribe," etc.) has been re-ordered. Transcribe and Proofread, as the more important items, have been moved to the right and styled differently.
  • I've begun deleting some old archived transcripts. Transcript histories over a year old no longer have text. This shouldn't affect users much -- it would be very rare to revert a transcript to one that old. The edits will still show up on the History tab, and in a user's Edit history. This change basically cut the database size by like 25%.
  • On the Video pages, the next/previous video links are now labeled as "older" and "newer."

There's been a lot going on lately, but I think that's everything.

I'm currently working on email. Sending email has always sort of been working, but not very reliably. I'm hoping these changes will finally make it start working more consistently.

Let me know if you notice a sudden drop (or jump) in the number of notification emails you receive from the site.

Relative links are broken. For example, the link to the split transcript from a recent update goes to "splittranscript/105", which from the discussion page works just fine. However, in the email, this ended up being a broken link.

Feature Testing

Hey everyone. With the launch of John & Hank's new podcast, I've been adding Soundcloud support to the wiki. Transcribing these should now work reasonably well.

Podcasts are long, though, so I'm looking for people to test out another feature for me. Click here to go to the collaborative transcript for the first podcast episode. This is a feature that splits the transcript up into small sections (in this case, 2-minute long sections) so it can be transcribed by multiple people at once.

If anyone has time, it'd be great if you could try that out and see if you encounter any major issues.

The only major issue that I noticed was that after finishing a section and marking it as complete, it didn't update until I refreshed the page. I'm not sure if that is supposed to happen, but I have to be honest, it made me a little nervous since I transcribed it all in one go. 

There was some delays every now and then with the unpaused player stopping for a bit after a keyboard shortcut was used, but it was really small so I wouldn't say that it is a major issue. Though, the delay occurred more if shortcuts were used back to back, like rewind twice. Though again, that isn't really an issue if the transcriber is conscious of this and spaces out their shortcut use by a little bit. 

All in all I really liked how it was separated into small chunks of time and thought that it functioned well.

I also like that it's separated into two minute chunks. I think it works better than the five minute chunks that the Ear Biscuit podcasts are boken into.

My only concern is that it appears that no-one can edit a completed section. This would make it difficult to correct spelling mistakes in other peoples' sections. Also it seems that this could be abused by spammers. They could write anything they wanted, say that it's completed and no-one would be able to fix it. Someone may also accidentally mark it as complete and wouldn't be able to correct their mistake. I'm assuming that it can only be edited as a whole when the entire thing is fully transcribed.

I could be wrong about this feature but that's how it appeared to me when I was using it.

I like the shortcuts and they seem to work fine. I didn't have any delay when using them.

dreamer96 - It should auto-save and update every few seconds. There could be an issue with updating; I already fixed a few save-and-update related issues after you tested, but I'm not sure if that would've fixed the issues you were seeing.

I'll do so more testing with the keyboard shortcuts. I don't think there's anything I can improve with my code, but there's a lot going on that could cause lag.

videodude13 - Yeah, I'm trying to find the optimal chunk length. Admins can create a Split Transcript from any video/podcast that doesn't already have a transcript, and when you do that you can specify how many chunks you want or how long you want the chunks to be, so we can play around with that. But two minutes is looking pretty good.

I do need to add the ability for admins (or possibly everyone) to re-open a completed chunk. I started coding that, but haven't finished it yet.

The way I envisioned this working is that, after all the sections have been marked Complete, the Split page becomes inactive, and users can edit the transcript like normal on the video/audio's page. So that, combined with admins reopening chunks, should take care of spammers or typos.

Just wondering how the "priority" videos are selected? I decided to check out the Japanese translations section (apparently there's only 1 done, unless more are done on youtube itself & those aren't counted here?), but when I went to the list of priority videos, the top video listed is an old vlogbrothers about online communities with only 300-some views. Huh?

This may be more information than you want, but here's how the Priority works:

  • Each channel has its own priority value. Channels like Vlogbrothers have a higher priority than, say, hankschannel. When a video gets added to the wiki, that video's priority is set to its channel's priority.
  • This, however, can be overridden. Individual videos can be assigned a higher or lower priority by an admin. This appears to be what's going on here -- an admin probably wanted to get a few specific videos transcribed, so they upped their priority. That was an unlisted vlogbrothers video, so it hadn't been getting much attention.
  • After the priority value is taken into account, any videos with the same priority will displayed oldest-first.

There aren't separate priorities for each language. So an admin probably wanted a few videos transcribed into English, and now those videos are showing up as high-priority in other languages.

For the first time in forever, there's a new feature: a custom search. It's essentially another advanced search for the site, but a lot more powerful.

I haven't added it to any menus or linked to it on any pages yet, but you can get to it here:
