Hello,

I am pretty new to this site and Nerfighteria, I was just joining it because it sounded cool in their videos. Can anyone tell me everything or anything they know about Nerfighteria,

thx, hazelgrace0kay0kay

hazelgrace0kay0kay on 2014 Aug 04 20:47

i just got nerfighteria but i dont completly understand what this sight is for i just got it cuz they r always talking about it on vlogbrothers so can someone tell me what this sight is for exactly...

starwarsstarkid on 2014 Aug 08 02:00

Hello there!

On this site, we transcribe (meaning write out the script from) and translate videos. These videos can be from the vlogbrothers themselves, or one of Hank or John's other channels, like Crash Course, SciShow, or Sexplanations. These transcriptions and translations will eventually be uploaded to the actual videos for the deaf/hard of hearing, or those who have a preferred language other than English.

Also, this site includes lots of information about Nerdfighteria. Check out the articles tab, and you'll find all sorts entries, from John's books to the Project for Awesome to a dictionary of terms and inside jokes used in this community.

If you're a new Nerdfighter, this site is a great resource to learn more! DFTBA.

Is there really an atvantage to making an account here to edit pages?

216.x.x.105 on 2014 Aug 02 14:48

Advantage*

aarip on 2014 Aug 02 23:47

Everyone knows who edited it.

kitchensink108 on 2014 Aug 03 22:24

It just gives you an identity. People can recognize who you are when you post on the discussion board, you can easily keep track of what transcripts you've edited, you can set up your user page to introduce yourself or link to your social media sites, etc.

Other than that, it doesn't actually unlock any features. It's completely optional.

aarip on 2014 Jul 10 11:40

I can't seem to be able to upload images to the wiki articles. When they upload, they just come up as blank images. I've made sure that the images are .JPG files and that my internet is fine. Has this been happening to anyone else? Please help!

kitchensink108 on 2014 Jul 19 04:34

Yep, looks like image uploading was broken. Sorry about that. Should be fixed now, but let me know if you keep having issues with it.

videodude13 on 2014 Jul 13 07:17

I have just been through the dictionary word approval and sometimes there are lots of words that are definitely in the dictionary being suggested such as 'and', 'the, 'easy' e.t.c. Is there some reason that the spell checker sometimes forgets all the common words? It just means the dictionary gets flooded with words it definitely knows and you have to reject 200 at a time.

non sequitur on 2014 Jul 13 09:24

I've noticed that too, both when i'm reviewing the spellchecker and proofreading transcripts. Some transcripts have all the common words highlighted as misspellings, and unless you ignore every single one they end up in the spellcheck.

kitchensink108 on 2014 Jul 19 04:23

This is what happens when a transcript is saved while the spellchecker's dictionary is broken (from an unsupported word being added to it). It'll mark every word as misspelled.

I can fix this on the back-end if you're seeing a lot of these, but you can fix it on an individual basis by going to a video and either 1) re-saving the transcript (just edit->save, you don't need to change anything, or 2) click the spellcheck button (edit->spellcheck, you don't need to go through the misspellings). This should fix all the wrongly-flagged words for that video.

videodude13 on 2014 Jul 06 08:11

Is it just me or is the spellcheck not working. Whn I click the spellcheck button nothing is underlined, even words I deliberately misspelled.

kitchensink108 on 2014 Jul 06 15:02

This happens when the dictionary breaks. Some words will break the dictionary when they're added to it, and I haven't built very good safeguards to prevent this. It's usually words with numbers in them (this time it was lonelygirl15).

I've removed that and it looks like spellchecking is working again.

AyoDftba on 2014 Jun 17 09:39

Hey, could someone fix the dictionary? Among the things it doesn't know, it also doesn't know that Asheville, NC is a real place, btw.

non sequitur on 2014 Jun 17 10:27

Working on it now, there's quite a few submitted words so it might take a while, sorry!!

I'll message you when I'm done :)

videodude13 on 2014 Jun 14 12:45

These transcripts have been vandalised and I was wondering if anyone could restore them. I've tried but when I click edit or history the box turns blank. Is it just me or can no-one edit them?

http://nerdfighteria.info/video/52/oPf27gAup9U/1

http://nerdfighteria.info/video/52/3PszVWZNWVA/1

Is there anyway to report or block a user if they vandalise the site?

kitchensink108 on 2014 Jun 14 16:04

Done. I'm not sure yet why a couple of those videos couldn't be edited. I'll look into that as a separate issue.

Right now only I can ban users, but I'm hoping to open that up to admins at some point.

zanay24 on 2014 Jun 12 06:34

I'm new to all this, and I have a question that maybe a fellow translator can answer--how would you translate "nerdfighter" into another language? I'm thinking phonetic is my only option, but that takes so much away from the term. And I don't feel like I have the creative licence to create a Russian equivalent. Any advice? Thanks!

non sequitur on 2014 Jun 13 04:05

If you are the only person on the wiki who is translating into russian, it's really your decision. Have you been to the languages page to check if there is a translation added to the russian dictionary?

If you don't feel comfortable deciding, perhaps you could try subtitl.us or some russian nerdfighter groups (on facebook etc.)?

Sorry that I couldn't help much, good luck!

kitchensink108 on 2014 May 03 03:44

Let's make a thread here for bug reports.

Bug #1: Editing posts doesn't work! Fixed.

videodude13 on 2014 May 03 11:03

I just tried to create a transcript and it when I clicked save changes, it didn't save. I therefore cannot create any transcripts.

kitchensink108 on 2014 May 03 15:01

Yeah, looks like there was an issue with creating transcripts (vs creating new ones). Fixed now.

non sequitur on 2014 May 03 18:13

Wowww this looks so amazing and all the new features are so cool! I spent like 3 hours playing around with everything last night!!

Bugs/problems I found while geeking out at all the amazing new features:

  • There is a problem with the "high-priority" videos list on the transcribe page where the very first brotherhood 2.0 videos are coming up as untranscribed. I tried marking them as incomplete and complete again but it didn't do anything.
  • The "caption info" pages are blank. I'm not sure if this is a problem or there just isn't any info yet.
  • When you subscribe to a channels transcripts it doesn't automatically change the preference in your user preferences.
  • The box to edit your profile information is suddenly really tiny.
  • I think that edits aren't automatically being added to your profile because every time I go on I can claim edits, even though I'm always logged in when I edit. I'm not sure if this is just my computer or everyone's though

Questions:

  • When should videos be locked? Will this prevent anyone from editing the transcript? Is this the point?
  • Should the submit page be expanded to include suggestions for the spellcheck dictionary?
  • Should we change the spelling to US English for English transcripts that are written with international spellings? (not other languages, just UK/Australian English etc. )
kitchensink108 on 2014 May 03 21:46
  • High priority list should now be fixed. It'll also try to avoid listing live shows.
  • Caption info is still under development. Should be up today or tomorrow.
  • Haha. The channel transcript sub form wasn't working because I partially developed it one way, then fully developed it another (completely different) way. So basically the form on the channel page wasn't talking to the form on the preferences page. I've disabled the one on the preferences page until I get it working.
  • User profile box should be bigger now.
  • Let me know if you're still seeing this issue. I'm not seeing anything obvious, and there's a chance it was a temporary thing.

Answers:

  • Locking a transcript will, indeed, prevent anyone from editing it. Admins can unlock it, edit it, and relock it, but no one can edit while it's locked. I envisioned this being like a "final review" stage. Transcripts can be marked complete by users, and the transcripts can then be reviewed or cleaned up by an admin, who could then proceed to lock it. Thus, "locking" basically means "this transcript has been reviewed, it looks good and needs no further edits, so let's lock it to keep it that way."
  • Something like that. I haven't decided exactly how submitting words should work, but we definitely need something like that soon.
  • I think I'm going to keep that as "up to you." You can feel free to "ignore" the misspellings that use International English, or you can change them to US English. And you can continue to transcribe using International English if you'd like. However, there should be a preference for US English (transcribe in it if you're comfortable with it), and don't change any spellings from US English to International English.

There might also be an issue with notification emails right now. I'm not getting them for the discussion page, so I'll be looking into that.

videodude13 on 2014 May 04 16:09

I just tried to lock "First Date with the Yeti: Miracle of Swindon Town #5" (hankgames) as 173.x.x.139 keeps spamming it, but it wouldn't lock. If you look at the video's history you'll see their spamming. I also proofread it to make sure it could be locked.

kitchensink108 on 2014 May 05 00:35

Locking should be fixed now. I just broke the transcript into paragraphs, locked the transcript, and banned the user's IP.

I'll need to add some more functionality for banning users soon, so make people like that easier to deal with.

videodude13 on 2014 May 05 08:49

On the calendar January is always blank

Bobidou23 on 2014 May 05 20:14

In addition, last days of the previous month show up, but not the first days of the next month. (e.g. on the April page, March 30 videos show up, but no videos for May 1-3)

When trying to make a new schedule, I can't choose categories, and nothing happens when clicking "Create schedule".

kitchensink108 on 2014 May 06 01:51

Okay, lots of bug fixes.

  • Admin: Fixed an issue with marking a video as captioned.
  • Admin: Fixed an issue with creating a schedule, where categories would not load. This appears to have resolved the issue with creating a schedule, as well as resolving the issue where schedules were displayed multiple times on the calendar.
  • Admin: Fixed an issue where the transcript queue could always display a count of 0.
  • Fixed an issue where the calendar would be blank for January.
  • Fixed an issue where videos woud not display on the days showing for the next month.
  • Began stripping <div> and </div> from transcripts when saving.
  • Fixed an issue where choosing to spellcheck before marking a transcript complete would take you to the View tab if you were already on the Edit tab, instead of keeping you on the Edit tab.

I also prioritized about half the channels with suggestions from Valerie. Transcript priority has been added as a column to the Channel Manager on the admin page.

Submitting a word to add to the spellcheck dictionary is mostly coded. I just need to build a screen where admins can approve/reject these words. There will be a new button next to "save change" and "ignore misspelling" for adding a word to a dictionary. If you click that, all flags for that word (across all channels) will be hidden. If an admin accepts the word, it'll be permanently added to the dictionary. If an admin rejects the word, all flags for that word will become visible again.

I'm still working on the email issues. I think I'm getting about half the emails I should be, but I still have no idea what's going on there.

non sequitur on 2014 May 07 03:04

There seems to be a problem with numbered lists in transcripts, where when you save it they suddenly have double spaces in between them, and when you go back in to edit it all the numebrs change to "1."

Also, should bullet points be used in transcripts or are these difficult to turn into captions? Should numbered lists only be used when the speaker actually says the numbers?

Sorry for asking so many questions!

kitchensink108 on 2014 May 08 03:22

I'll do some testing of lists later, that sounds like an annoying thing to fix. My thinking, though, is that lists (particularly numbered lists) should be avoided in transcripts. Since we're transcribing what the person is saying, I think it's better to do things like spell out "first" or "one" instead of using lists. It's still good to add in line breaks, and maybe make each point its own paragraph.

Bulleted lists don't run into that problem as much, so if you think it's easier to read as a bulleted list, go ahead and use that. Bulleted lists work fine for short lists. If the list has like ten different bullet points or the bullet points are each a paragraph long, then I'd suggest avoiding HTML lists and just using paragraphs.

Hope that makes sense. And as always, if anyone disagrees, feel free to chime in.

Bobidou23 on 2014 May 08 18:10

All contractions (I'm, you've, they're) are flagged by the spellchecker, resulting in quite many red lines.

kitchensink108 on 2014 May 08 18:22

That's weird. I just tested this sentence: "I'm hoping this doesn't break, can't shouldn't doesn't blarg." The spellchecker only flagged "blarg" for me.

Wait, I see what's going on. I'm assuming these were copied from MS Word, and Word really likes to use those fancy angled quotes. Looks like it's working fine when you just use the normal quotation marks, but the spellchecker messes up if you use the angled ones. I'll see if I can do something about that.

kitchensink108 on 2014 May 13 16:17

I added a quick fix so the spellchecker correctly parses the weird MS Word quotation marks. Sometime soon I'll make it so those get replaced by normal quotation marks.

Animal Wonders was added a few days ago.

Users can now choose to add a word to the dictionary. The button appears by the "save" and "ignore" buttons when viewing individual misspellings. Right now this only hides that misspelling. I'm still working on functionality so admins can approve/reject submitted words. This is being developed in the Admin: Spellchecker section.

I'm also developing an Admin: Articles section that shows all deleted articles. There have been cases where users accidentally deleted an article, but there's never been an easy way to get it back. So when this is done, admins will be able to reactivate any article that's been deleted.

There was some downtime yesterday as I did some server maintenance. I plan on doing some more this weekend (with some more downtime), but it shouldn't be more than a couple hours.

videodude13 on 2014 May 16 07:34

On the spellcheck manager the approve and reject buttons aren't working. The reject button does nothing and when I clicked the approve button it put in the word I wanted to approve after every word already in the dictionary.

kitchensink108 on 2014 May 16 16:00

Yeah, sorry about that. I'm still working on those two (I thought reject might be working, but apparently not). I also plan on adding the ability to restore previous versions of the dictionary, in cases that something weird happens and it gets messed up.

LaRiver on 2014 May 17 14:23

I translated the first two videos of Crash Course Chemistry to German and marked them as Complete, but it didn't save, everytime I leave the page, the box unticks itself. I also tried doing it with the Spellcheck, but since that is only for English, 95% of the text are marked red. Have I overlooked something or is it a bug?

Also, you upload actual captions for the videos after the transcripts have been added, right? Do you do the same for the translated scripts?

kitchensink108 on 2014 May 17 22:18

Yeah, looks like there was a bug with marking non-English transcripts as complete. That's fixed now. When English transcripts (for certain channels) are completed, they're uploaded as captions. We can't do that with translations right now unless you do timed transcripts, though. Check subtitl.us if you're interested in adding timing info for the translation so it can be used as captions.

non sequitur on 2014 May 18 09:06

I don't think the spellcheck in the proofread section is working properly. How to adult and animal wonders are both only showing one option even though it says there should be more, and the art assignment isn's showing any.

teresae on 2014 May 18 14:49

I'm having some troubles with the spellcheck as well. It doesn't seem to actually save some actions so that the same problems come up over and over again (more specifically: I was just going through the Lizzie Bennet Diaries ones and I'm sure I klicked through some of them at least 3 times). As far as I can tell it happens to all actions.

Is it possible to change the fact that only a limited number of "errors" are displayed each time? That way you coud just keep going and wouldn't have to reload the page every couple of minutes.

kitchensink108 on 2014 May 18 17:15

I'm still looking into some of the issues you've mentioned, but here are some updates:

  • The issue with the dropdown saying there are misspellings but no misspellings displaying should be partially fixed.
  • The issue with some actions not seeming to take effect... this might an issue when you're ignoring multiple misspellings at the same time. When the same word is misspelled multiple times in one video, it tries to combine that so you can fix them all at once. I just tested that, and fixing a misspelling like that seems to work. However, ignoring a misspelling like that might be doing them one at at a time. So if it's showing you five misspellings combined, you may need to ignore->refresh->ignore five times. I'm hoping this is the issue you're seeing, because that shouldn't be too difficult to fix.
  • When you select a channel, it's only showing you the first 250 misspellings. I've increased it to 500. I don't want to show all misspellings at once, because for vlogbrothers or Crash Course that will take a ridiculously long time to load. I'll consider increasing it again to 1000, though.

teresae on 2014 May 18 19:48

Everything is working perfectly for me now (even ignoring combined misspellings, I think anyway) except for the add to dictionary function which just does nothing.

I think the real problem with the limited number was the fact that I was seeing the same things over and over again and wasn't able to get to any new ones so 500 seems perfect! Thanks for the quick answer!

non sequitur on 2014 May 18 20:18

I checked the spellcheck page in the admin section and it came up with a lot of submitted words (for the dictionary) from you, so perhaps the problem is just that noone has approved your words yet? I'll go through them now and hopefully the problem will be fixed!

teresae on 2014 May 18 20:26

Yes probably. Some input/feedback on which words should be added to the dictionary would be great! I don't want to make you work more than necessary.

non sequitur on 2014 May 19 07:01

I was actually wondering that myself, does anyone have any ideas for the type of words that should be added? at the moment there are a lot of 'ummm''s and words like that in the dictionary and I'm not sure if we should keep them!

kitchensink108 on 2014 May 20 14:39

For which words to add to the dictionary:

Anything that's coming up as misspelled that isn't misspelled or that accurately describes what the speaker is saying that you feel has a chance of being said more than once (particularly in more than one video). Like, there's apparently a video where Hank says "holycowscrazygeniuses." Hank has a very low (though admittedly higher than normal) chance of ever saying that again, so click Ignore instead of Add To Dictionary.

In another case, though, a transcript contains the word "Mononegavirales." That's... not a very common word. It may never be transcribed here again. But it's a real word and is spelled correctly, so may as well add it to the dictionary.

Beyond that, though, just do whatever feels most right. Words can be added and removed from the dictionary easily, and Ignores only ignore single instances, so deciding to do one instead of the other in one case isn't going to have a huge impact either way.

As for "ummm" and such:

It's fine to have a few instances of each of these in the dictionary. "Um," "Umm," and "Ummm." "Uh," "Uhh," and "Uhhh." Etc. After that, though, either ignore them or correct them to a smaller one. I don't think we need versions of these words with more than three repeated letters in the dictionary. In cases of just drawn-out syllables (e.g. if someone said "We could do that, buuuuuut let's not"), Ignore it instead of Adding it.

This is all a little convoluted, so try not to get too hung up on specifics. Hopefully this helped a little?

non sequitur on 2014 Jun 13 04:02

I think there are some bugs with the proofread page.

  • Many of the channels won't load anything despite saying that they have errors. They also won't come up with a message to say that there aren't any/they are all pending dictionary addition
  • DFTBA records is showing (1) but then it comes up with the message about having no results found or all results pending. I've checked on the spellcheck page and there aren't any.
  • I'm reading through the same errors and clicking "ignore" multiple times. Is this meant to happen or is it meant to be ignored forever?
