So, I forgot to proofread the first two minutes of the newest podcast transcribe before hitting complete. There are some spelling errors. How do I go about fixing those, since I don't see a way to uncomplete nor a link under Proofread to find misspellings in the Podcasts?

kitchensink108 on 2016 Feb 05 03:22

I just opened it back up, so you can make changes to it now if you'd like.

PaulWooton on 2016 Feb 06 18:19

Thank you and sorry about that,

Kbell on 2016 Feb 06 00:09

I cannot watch any of the videos for some reason, it says I must be approved to watch it, why is this?

kitchensink108 on 2016 Feb 06 00:26

That's not something that should be happening. Can you watch them if you go directly to youtube?

Is anyone else having issues with this?

Freakazette on 2016 Jan 25 23:54

Has anybody else been having problems with the site lately? It will breifly (or sometimes not so briefly) disconnect, almost like my internet stopped but it's only this site. It did it this morning when I went to update a script, it was only down for a minute. When I noticed it was taking a while to load I managed to copy the text before it kicked to the mad-at-you screen so I didn't lose anything, but it's been happening relatively frequently.

non sequitur on 2016 Jan 11 07:22

I'm not sure if this is just on my (admittedly awful) computer but in Transcript Misspellings it often says things like "Animal Wonders (23)" and yet comes up with the message "No misspellings found, or all words are pending approval for the dictionary." when I select it.

I've checked the spellcheck manager and there aren't any words pending approval so I'm not sure what's going on.

Freakazette on 2016 Jan 16 05:59

This has been brought up before. I have no idea what the count is based off of. I tried to look at the code to see if I could tell what it's doing and though it's a bit (a lot, actually) more complex than anything I've done in the past, it kind of looks like those numbers are just typed into the names in the dropdown and not taken from anywhere? KitchenSink would really be the one who would know, though.

kitchensink108 on 2016 Jan 16 06:25

It's server-side code (lots of PHP+SQL), so you won't be able to see where the counts are coming from by looking at the HTML. But that's cool that you tried. Very few people take a look at any of the code here besides myself.

Anyway, yeah. It's a complicated mess, even by my standards, and I wrote the thing. It's very difficult to make fixes to. However, the issue here is efficiency -- the code runs really slowly (in part because the feature got used a lot more than I thought it would), so in order to get any counts at all, it sort of estimates how many misspellings there are instead of getting an exact count. This makes the page load in a reasonable amount of time, but also means that the counts aren't perfect.

I'm considering doing something like a daily or hourly refresh of the counts. That would hopefully give accurate counts, just not in real time. I think that's the only feasible option.

I've just started transcribing and had a few hitches. All was going well until I saved, and now I can't get back into edit mode, can   only see what I've done so far. Any recommendations?

kitchensink108 on 2015 Nov 29 17:52

Sorry, there's an issue where copying and pasting from Word can break the page. It's fixed now, so you should be able to get back in.

Freakazette on 2015 Nov 30 14:48

To avoid this in the future you can try to right click and "paste as plain text" (which I think is not available in all browsers) or sometimes putting it in notepad and copying from there takes out whatever word puts in that makes it crash. If it does happen again, just let an admin know and we can fix it up for you =)

Thanks :)

This is a public service announcement

Please use the tag (?), yes use the parenthesis, to mark anything you're not sure about on a video or podcast. The website has a built in system designed to help clear these tags, if you just put a bunch of question marks or something it is very likely nobody will see it to fix it. Thank you.

Hi, just wanted to say, there are some times where people in videos say things like "Oh my g-d!" Does anybody mind that I hyphenate that? That's how I feel comfortable writing because religious, but if it bothers people I don't *have* to.

stephenwade on 2015 Nov 10 04:23

Don't censor things that aren't curses. If it's in the video, it should be in the transcript.

Curse words should be bleeped in the original video, and should probably be obscured in the transcript ("f***", "s***", etc.). But don't censor "oh my god" and similar phrases.

Freakazette on 2015 Nov 11 17:15

Most of the channels that we transcribe here will bleep out curses, but some channels like the gaming ones don't. I write them as is in the video, so if it's bleeped, you put f-- or f** or [bleep] or whatever else, but only if it's that way in the video. Putting curse words in the transcript will automatically flag it for vandalism and an admin will have to mark it ok, but "god" is not on that list. If it makes you very uncomfortanble to write "god" in the transcripts, you can flag it with a (?) and a timestamp and someone will clear it for you later.

Hank has mentioned Engage by Uplift as being one of his projects which I think merits its addition to the sight. I previously mentioned that I also thought Cereal Time could be added for a similar reason. I know we can barely keep most of the main channels transcribed (thank you so much to all the dedicated people doing that) but I still think these extra channels should be added. They may not be transcribed regularly and will probably fall behind, especially something as long and regular as Cereal Time, but as it says on the front page "The Nerdfighteria Wiki is a repository of nerdfighteria culture and videos, with a focus on projects by Hank and John Green." Even if they don't get transcribed immediately they will still be on the site for people to potentially transcribe them. What do you think?

Freakazette on 2015 Oct 03 19:55

I think Uplift should be on here. It was suggested a while back but I think it only got one or two upvotes.

kitchensink108 on 2015 Oct 04 04:01

I just added them both. Cereal Time has a low priority, so hopefully it doesn't drown out other channels that need transcribing.

Freakazette on 2015 Sep 05 16:55

Kitchensink, can you please check to make sure that the warning that someone else is editing is working? I've never actually seen it and I've been in at least five situations where I'm pretty sure someone should have seen it..

I'd appreciate it.

kitchensink108 on 2015 Sep 05 17:09

Yeah, I have a bunch of things I need to look at this weekend, including that. runalovegood also noticed that it might not be working as intended, so I think there's something not quite right with it.

Freakazette on 2015 Sep 30 04:49

I saw it today! It's working!

videodude13 on 2015 Sep 25 09:42

I think Hank's recent feature of Cereal Time at the end of his bonus video this week means that we should have Cereal Time on here. I also think that since we have The Finiancial Diet on here, which Hank only has a minor role in, means Cereal Time should be on as well. What do you think?

Freakazette on 2015 Sep 27 13:17

My concern with adding Cereal Time always has been and remains the amount of work it will add to the site. It's a weekdaily show who's episode lengths are similar to that of CrashCourse (i.e. not short). At the moment we can't even keep up with the shows we have on a weekly basis.
