Hey, can someone please tell me how I can pause a 'Dear Hank and John' podcast while I'm transcribing? Everytime I pause to write I can't play it again unless I refresh the page or open up the podcast in a different tab

kitchensink108 on 2016 Aug 06 00:22

I think I've had some weird issues with that as well. SoundCloud embeds are a little strange. Are the keyboard shortcuts working? Hit [tab] while in the textbox to enable (or disable) shortcuts, and then backslash to play (or pause) the audio.

Also, are you transcribing on the collaborative page (where the transcript is broken into two minute chunks) or the main page?

MexicanZombie on 2016 Aug 06 16:45

The shortcuts are working now! Yesterday they weren't working so well, but now I'm good. Thanks, kitchensink!

I'm woking on a collaborative page (where everything's split up into chunks), and I'd tell everyone to only use shortcuts when transcribing something from a Souncloud embed. If you try to pause or go forward or back manually things just get difficult and complicated.

Hi, I just accidentally pressed Mark Complete in DH&J 39 from 8:00 to 10:00. Could that be fixed? Thank you and I'm really sorry.

kitchensink108 on 2016 Jul 14 13:17

Sorry for the wait, this is done now.

Hey, is anyone here going to NerdCon: Nerdfighteria? Would love to have a wiki meetup there!  :)

videodude13 on 2016 Jul 08 14:22

I'd love to but as I live a couple of thousand miles away it would be quite impractical and expensive to get there. I hope you have a great time.

dreamer96 on 2016 Jul 13 22:18

I don't really have the money to fly out there, so I'm probably not going to go, but I hope everyone that can go has lots of fun!

I found a relatively easy way to convert CC on YT into a transcript, so I thought I'd share with the class.

So you take a transcript from youtube (I do this by clicking more, transcript, and hilighting and copying the text) and paste the text into word. Then do find/replace and replace ^p^#:^#^# with ^s if the video is longer than ten minutes you will also need to replace ^p^#^#:^#^#

This removes all page breaks and timestamps. Copying directly from word onto the website has caused weird locking issues in the past so please paste it into notepad first and copy from there to clear formatting or on some browsers you can right click and "paste as plain text"

Now you just need to break it up into paragraphs, add any sound effects and links necessary, spell check and you're done! I usually watch through the video to tell where paragraph breaks make sense to me and make sure everything's spelled correctly, occaisionally the CC has small mistakes in it.

videodude13 on 2016 Jun 17 10:19

That is so useful! I had just been copying and pasting the CCs in as plain text to remove the weird formatting issues and then manually deleting all the time stamps which took a long time. Thanks for the advice.

Does anybody know if there's a way to change the speed on soundcloud? I've recently disccovered that youtube has this feature and using half speed on the videos allows me to type longer before I have to pause. I would love to apply that to the podcasts if at all possible.

stephenwade on 2016 Mar 21 18:17

Unfortunately, that's not possible on SoundCloud. I'd suggest downloading the audio file and using VLC or QuickTime Player to adjust the playback speed. You can also subscribe to the podcast in your mobile app of choice (I like Pocket Casts) and change the playback speed there.

Hi, I've been transcribing Dear Hank and John number 30 and had it basically finished. Through some combination of a bad internet connection and my laptop crashing, I can't seem to recover the second half. It would be great if someone can set it back to how it was at its maximum characters (somewhere around 81000) as I can't seem to. Thanks.

stephenwade on 2016 Mar 14 01:38

I'm not sure what happened in that transcription, but I went ahead and copied a finished transcript from the split transcript.

Freakazette on 2016 Mar 15 15:32

I just did the formatting for this one and as far as I could tell it was missing one two-minute section, I think it's good now. =)

0llierose on 2016 Mar 21 18:10

Thank you both very much

How would I transcribe a video where John switches from voice overs to having a conversation with some one, like the newest "thoughts from places" video about the Syrian Refugee Camp?

kitchensink108 on 2016 Mar 15 19:27

I have a couple different suggestions for that. If anyone else would like to comment on what they think works best, that would be good as well.

  • Prefix John's dialog with "John: ", Husam's with "Husam: ", and John's narration with "Voiceover: " or "Narration: " or something like that.
  • Or prefix John and Husam's conversations, but don't prefix the narration.

Either way, since John and Husam talk to each other one sentence at a time, and John's narration is usually multi-sentence, it should end up visually distinct anyway, making it easier to tell the John's roles apart.

Hi, I've been using the transcripts here for my thesis (which involves analysing some Scishow videos)--it's been very helpful, thank you all so very much as you've saved me hours and hours of transcription! However, I recently found one Scishow video that doesn't seem to be on the wiki, A SciShow infusion on the Science of Lying from 2012: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MX3Hu8loXTE

Since I need to transcribe it for my thesis anyway, how can I add this video and its transcript to the wiki? Or is it already here but I've missed it somehow?

Thanks guys!

stephenwade on 2016 Mar 14 01:19

I'm not sure why it disappeared, but I just added it back. As a bonus, it already had a transcript! I guess that didn't get deleted when the video disappeared.

In the future, if you find a video missing, you can suggest that we add it by using the Submit button at the top of the page.

I'm having trouble deciding how best to transcribe the "150 Sex acts" for Sexplanations this week. Dr. Doe is listing off 150 Sex acts - at first I thought bullet points would work, but then she goes into tangents or subcategories, or interjects on herself to clarify about a specific act, which is making the bulletpoint format look sloppy. Although it flows organically when spoken, If I just transcribe directly as spoken, it looks even worse - all clumped together with lots of fragmented sentences. Any thoughts?

kitchensink108 on 2016 Feb 26 20:37

That one's difficult. Personally I'd probably do it as spoken. Each category of items would be its own paragraph. Each individual item would be its own sentence (so quick lists of items would all be separated by a period instead of a comma).

I'm sure ther are reasons that wouldn't work out as I'm envisioning, but that's my suggestion.

Hi, sorry, I was transcribing the first part of the 30th DH&J podcast, and I accidentally put 'Mark Complete' on a section that wasn't done yet (2:00 - 4:00). How can I fix this?

kitchensink108 on 2016 Feb 20 15:41

I just fixed it, that section can be transcribed again.

MexicanZombie on 2016 Feb 23 16:35

Thank you!
