Does anyone know/remember which video John proves to Hank that he's a rockstar and that you should never cross things off your list? I remember that John included a clip from 2007, when Hank explains that he'll never be a rockstar. And then, in the wake of a tour that probably involved a lot of Accio Deathly Halows, he includes another clip in which Hank is seriously rocking out in front of a crowd of nerdfighters. This was a favorite vlogbrothers video of mine, and I can't seem to relocate it...

Crash Course kids videos still aren't being added automatically.

kitchensink108 on 2015 Apr 15 03:39

Sorry, that took a while to fix. It should be fine now, but it seems to be behaving a little oddly so let me know if you notice it break again.

videodude13 on 2015 Mar 25 09:27

The Crash Course Kids videos aren't automatically being added to the site. I've added the last four manually.

kitchensink108 on 2015 Mar 27 17:37

Thanks. It looks like the API call was missing some information, so I've fixed that. It should start working now.

videodude13 on 2015 Apr 08 10:40

The latest Crash Course Kids video hasn't been added automatically.

Categorizing some old videos, and a couple of questions:

- There's an old P4A video on vlogbrothers (P4A 2012 IndieGoGo Updated) that was uncategorized, but there's no longer a category for it. Where should it go?

- Old vlog by Hank that is uncategorized; it's 2013, The Power of Online Communities. 2013 Vlogs is no longer a category.

- Bill Gates and John Green Discuss Agriculture is a vlog, but old, so no category vlog-wise. I categorized as guest video; hope that's what it means.

- Bill Gates and John Green Discuss Progress is also a vlog. I did the same thing.

Also, is categorizing videos actually useful to anyone?

kitchensink108 on 2015 Apr 08 06:03

Thanks for finding these. The 2012 P4A and 2013 Vlog categories were locked (under the assumption that no videos would need to be added or removed from them), which is why they weren't showing as options. I've added the categories to those two videos.

The Bill Gates videos are interesting. I'm not sure of a better place to put them, so Guest Videos is fine.

As for the usefulness... some categories are a lot more useful than others. The categories for Crash Course (e.g. World History), hankgames, and GamesWithHank are generally more useful than the categories for vlogbrothers or scishow.

There's also some behind-the-scenes stuff, like the fact that vlogbrothers live shows and p4a streams don't show up on the homepage as untranscribed.

I translated a Crash Course video directly on YouTube for the first time today. There are some translations that I am not too sure about. Should I still flag them, like I did back when I translated videos on this site, or should I do things differently now?

Edit: also, should my translation be finished when I send it? On this site we could check the "complete" box, and others could finish it if they wanted. I have now translated a part of a Crash Course video, but I am not sure whether if I only save it, everyone will be able to see it, or just me.

kitchensink108 on 2015 Apr 01 00:05

I'm not entirely sure on how YouTube's feature should be used, but here's my thinking. It's probably not a bad idea to keep flagging things with (?) or whatever marker you'd like to use. It's better to let people know that the translation might not be completely accurate.

I think you can go ahead and save it. The translation still needs to be manually approved (most likely by Valerie) before others will be able to see it.

Valerie might have some better answers if you'd like to email her at valerie@nerdfighteria.com.

I am a bit confused about translating transcripts:
I would like to help with the translations and I read that you can now add them directly on Youtube. Unfortunately, when I try to add some, Youtube doesn't allow me to select a language in which subtitles haven't already been added. So I could add, for example, new English ones, even though English subtitles already exist, but no German ones, which doesn't really make sense. What am I doing wrong :(?

(I'm sorry if this question has been asked before, I just haven't found the answer yet.)

kitchensink108 on 2015 Mar 21 20:59

When you go to YouTube's translation page, it should give you a dropdown of all current transcripts, along with a search box for new languages. Use the search box to find the new language you want to translate into, and that should take you to a page to create the translation. Here's a screenshot. Let me know if you're still having issues with it.

Charlie on 2015 Mar 22 00:01

That's what I tried to do, but in the seach box that Youtube showed me I could only seach among the current transcripts. With Part II of the same crashcourse, I had the same problem but when I tried another video, it worked like in your screenshot, so maybe it has something to do with this special video? That would be a pity as I already have the complete translation for the one I tried first.

Well, I'm going to translate other videos then :).

videodude13 on 2015 Mar 16 21:28

I've been trying to submit some videos today and when I click the submit button the page turns white and the video isn't submitted. Is it just me?

Bobidou23 on 2015 Mar 16 22:25

I've had this problem too. I've been trying to add https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XA1wWmTRGtg - Hank's livestream with Patreon.

kitchensink108 on 2015 Mar 16 22:30

Sorry, a couple features got broken over the weekend as I started transitioning the wiki from YouTube's v2 API to the v3 API. I'm working on fixing submissions right now.

kitchensink108 on 2015 Mar 16 22:49

Okay, I think this is fixed now. Let me know if you have any more issues with it. Sorry again about it being broken earlier.

amberolive on 2015 Feb 01 23:39

I would like to contribute by translating some or any of the English transcripts, but when I tried the instructions from the ""getting started" section, nothing happened. :( Does anyone have a suggestion?

kitchensink108 on 2015 Feb 02 16:04

YouTube has been adding the ability to do translations directly on YouTube. This can be a little easier for translators, and a little more useful to users. However, not all changes have been given this feature yet. For example, Crash Course has the feature, but Vlogbrothers does not.

I hid the translation features in order to put a little more emphasis on translating directly on YouTube. You can still translate here if you'd like, but you'll need to use this link to access it.

(Also, I haven't updated the guide with this information yet. Sorry for the confusion there)

Site Updates 2015/1/30

I've been working on getting Games With Hank transcribed, which transitioned to me actually doing some more work on the site itself (if you haven't noticed, I haven't done much here in a while).

I've done a few things to streamline the site a little.

  1. I've removed multi-language support. I really liked that feature, and some people put a lot of effort into translations, but in the end, they aren't nearly as useful as the English transcripts. I think most channels are now handling translations directly on YouTube, where they can be used as closed captions. Existing translations can still be viewed and edited, but no new translations can be created.
  2. I've hidden Emily Graslie's side-channel. ehmteevee. I was trying to decide if I wanted to add Lindsey Doe's new side-channel, but came to the conclusion that neither is as directly relevant to John/Hank as I'd like them to be. Let me know if you think one or both channels should be on the wiki, though. Emily's is ehmteevee, Lindsey's is DoeEyes.
  3. GamesWithHank and HankGames are now in their own "Gaming" category in the nav menu. I'm worried that the nav menu is getting too long horizontally, but it felt like the channels are too big to be relegated to the "side channels" category.
  4. As mentioned earlier, The March Family Letters has been removed from the wiki for not actually being associated with Hank.
videodude13 on 2015 Jan 27 17:45

The March Family Letters channel was briefly around but has now disappeared.  This means the later videos have been added to the Emma channel and the earlier ones are no longer on the site. Are we including them on the site or should the newer ones be removed?

kitchensink108 on 2015 Jan 28 01:27

I made a new channel for it a few days ago, and moved its Pemberley Digital videos over to that channel, before realizing that the series isn't actually affiliated with Hank; they just get to use Pemberley Digital on Youtube for distribution. This raised a few issues (e.g. it's outside the scope of the wiki, Hank doesn't own the copyright, etc).

So I've deactivated the channel, and yeah, any videos that get added from the series should be deactivated as well.
