Hi, I'm new here. I don't know if there's an option for translating the transcriptions (into Spanish). Because when I activate automatic translation in the video there are some mistakes in it. Is there some way to help fix that?

Thanks!

We no longer handle translations on this website. For some channels, like Crashcourse, you can translate the video directly on the youtube page. This feature is still in beta, so is not widely available, but you can do it for CrashCourse for sure. Go to the video you want to translate, underneath the video click more > transcript and then in the language dropdown box click "add subtitles/cc. From this page you will be able to select your language and then begin transcribing.

Though tbh I'm not totally sure that they're approving user-submitted captions right now.

Hi, um, I'm new here and I don't know if this is important enough to post on here, but I'm having some trouble transcribing one of the outtakes videos for CrachCourse. The Government & Politics one.

There are a lot of words that I'm not familiar with and I don't have the times to look through every one of the videos in the series to find out how they're spelled. But I saw the video and I thought I'd give a go at transcribing it.

Does anyone have any tips at transcribing videos like these where you don't know/can't hear all the words properly? Thanks.

-Note: Thank you Freakazette for the reply. This will help me a lot! =D

I just took a look at it and you're doing a good job. I'm less concerned about spelling things right on the CrashCourse outtakes because it rarely makes sense out of context anyway, and in outtakes videos expecially, many words are intentionally misspelled to convey the pronunciation, but you can flag words that you're concerned about. To make flags easier to clear, it's nice if you put a timestamp in them, even if it's just within a few second of it, but it's not necessary. If you work on a series regularly, there will be some words that you will recognize and remember from other videos.

Also, the "person offscreen" for crahscourse is usually Stan Muller. If you want to get a feel for his voice, you can watch crashcourse intellectual property, which he hosted.

So I noticed that there's a new channel on here, the Financial Diet, except the link to the channel doesn't work. I don't know how to edit this myself or even if I can, but this URL works:

For approving words to the dictionary, it seems logical to either submit or approve them for the most part so that at least two sets of eyes get to see them and make sure they're correct, but some of the ones I'm adding are made up names and such (like those in Titansgrave) Should I just go ahead and approve those ones since they're 100% made up? Thanks!

kitchensink108 on 2015 Aug 24 02:29

Yeah, you can go ahead and approve those yourself. I agree that it's good to get a second eye on these things, but for this stuff, it's more obscure so it's less likely that whoever's looking to approve/reject them knows what they're referring to.

videodude13 on 2015 Aug 24 07:34

I'd definitely Google them first. I just went through a batch of words you submitted and I found one of the Titansgrave names on Wil Wheaton's website. Most of them weren't but occasionally they have an "official" spelling.

Freakazette on 2015 Aug 24 14:33

I looked to see if there was a wiki or a guide or something and I didn't see anything. I always check the description first, but if it's not there I just guess. I did just manage to find Dhawan on tvtropes, is that the one you found, too?

videodude13 on 2015 Aug 24 14:53

I don't remember exactly which word it was but it was on Wil Wheaton's website. The description is always a good idea and tvtropes seems like a good source as well. Keep up the good work.

There seems to be something wrong with some of the VidCon videos. The order they appear in is (from most recent first) World Record, VidCon Overview, VidCon Parents, VidCon Signings, Worlds Collide. When you click on the individual videos and then navigate through them with the older/newer links it seems to be missing some out. For example starting with VidCon Signings and clicking newer you go to VidCon parents, then World record, missing out VidCon overview. If you start at World record and click the older link it goes to VidCon overview and then VidCon signings missing out VidCon parents.

The addition of the VidCon channel has messed up the VidCon category in the misc "channel". If you click the VidCon category in the misc channel it links to the videos, some of which are now in the VidCon channel section and some that aren't. If you click on a video that is now in the VidCon channel it doesn't have the VidCon category on it but it is still listed under the VidCon category in the misc channel (I hope that makes sense). Is there a way to remove the category from the videos that are now part of the VidCon channel?

The transcript misspellings counters on the transcribe page seem to be broken. Some channels, including animal wonders, crash course, and sanditon, have no misspellings, and there are no pending dictionary words, yet the counter is still there.

Also, emma gives me no results, but also no message saying "No misspellings found". Just nothing.

Finally, loading a longer list like hankgames or games with hank brings down the entire website for between five and fifteen seconds while waiting for results. (If I try to load another page during this time, the loading circle spins and spins until the list of words is loaded before the other page loads.)

stephenwade on 2015 Aug 23 02:29

Any ideas on this, kitchensink? Flagged counts are still doing weird things.

kitchensink108 on 2015 Aug 24 02:27

I made a couple small changes. One fixed an issue where if a word had nonalpha characters adjacent to it (e.g. "&hello"), it could flag the word as misspelled but would not show the word on the proofread page.

This won't fix the majority of the issues, though. I'm doing more research into it, but it's going to require me to rework some of the functionality. Right now it's hugely inefficient (see: how long it takes to load the misspellings list of the larger channels). As a result, the counts on the dropdown are more like estimates. I need to figure out a way to make things run faster (caching, optimizing the queries, other stuff) so that the results can be more accurate.

When I translate videos to Dutch, I have a problem whenever I run into a book title. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with it. Translate the title to Dutch, or leave it in English. The best option is of course to google for the Dutch translation of the book, and use that book's title, but not every book has been translated to Dutch. So what should I do? Translate the title, leave it, or leave it and at a translation between brackets?

kitchensink108 on 2015 Aug 20 17:23

Use the official translation if you can find it easily, but otherwise go ahead and use the English title. I'd advise against trying to translate the title yourself -- that would sort of be like translating a person's name, which just isn't a good idea.

I've got some timestamp craziness on mount mush dash. like half of the thing turned into a link and I don't know why. Please help. https://nerdfighteria.info/video/94/Pcz2-B9ZyKA/1

kitchensink108 on 2015 Jun 30 15:27

Fixed. Not sure how that happened, but there were a bunch of HTML links in the transcript that shouldn't have been there.

Freakazette on 2015 Jun 30 18:03

Thank you! Yeah I don't know what happened either. It looked like it didn't close the tag for a couple of timestamp links but I couldn't get it to go away.

Freakazette on 2015 Aug 19 04:21

Hey kitchensink, I found another endless link that I never figured out how to get rid of by myself. Please fix it: https://nerdfighteria.info/video/55/a_2JELZpSm0/1

videodude13 on 2015 Aug 19 21:50

I managed to remove the link mess from that second one by cutting the text into Notepad, saving it, cutting it again and pasting it back as plain text. That seemed to work.

Freakazette on 2015 Aug 20 02:53

Thanks! I'll have to remember that in case I come across it again.

Hey everyone!  This year's Nerdfighter Census is out and it has a few mentions of the Wiki on it.  Do the community a favor and fill it out?  Thanks a bunch!  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/XG96QSH
