I'll see if I can figure out why it's not happening automatically, but in the meantime, you should be able to manually deactivate a split transcript at Admin->Split Transcripts. This won't revert anything and you won't lose any of the transcript, it's just the manual way of doing what it's supposed to do automatically.

It appears that you can only deactivate split transcripts that aren't complete. I can't seem to find a way to do it for completed transcripts.

Sorry about that, just made a code change so that should work now. I went ahead and deactivated that split, as well.

The drag&drop included a bunch of HTML that messed up the page. I've stripped out all the HTML, so now it's possible to edit the transcript. The formatting is pretty messy, but at least it can be edited now.

Maybe it would help to put in the getting started guide a note to please not paste from YouTube or word or other things, or to right click and "paste as plain text" since it often carries over weird formatting junk that can bug up the code.

That's an idea. I might also add a thing where users (or just admins) can automatically strip all the HTML from a transcript, since this has happened a few times before and it's a bit of a time-consuming thing to fix.

Vlogbros videos are captioned by Valerie2776, CrashCourse channel has an open caption system, so anyone can submit them and they will be approved by a channel owner or mod.

Unfortunately, that system is either in beta or otherwise available to a very limited set of channels, so there is no way for the average joe to caption videos on channels like sexplanations or hankgames, etc. Those currently have to be captioned by someone who actually has the password to the account. Hopefully they will open up the public caption feature on other channels soon.

Yeah I figured that it was something like that, but I just wanted to make sure because I have been wrong plenty of times before. I just find it really discouraging to put in a lot of time into completing transcripts just for them to not be used. Anyways, I hope that they fix it soon. Also, thanks for answering Freakazette!

I know it's not the series you wanted to work on, but Crashcourse's series on Chemistry, Intellectual Property, and government and politics aren't captioned. Also economics, but I've submitted script for their current vids which I hope get approved soon. I also want to note that I'm not sure if they're really taking submissions, since none of the ones I've submitted have been approved (maybe because Vidcon?). So the feature is active, but possibly not really being used, I'm not sure.

What does the message look like for when somebody's already editing a script? I've done it at least twice now but I never see the thing.

OK at this point I just don't think it's working? I put headers into this podcast https://nerdfighteria.info/audio/hankgreen/201730831 which have now disappeared, since I don't think anybody would be rude enough to just get rid of them since they're work to put in, I have to assume someone else was working on it at the same time and the history things aren't working so I can't see to compare what I did before. ;.; I definitely did not see an alert at all and it's pretty frustrating to see your work get overwritten, especially when there's no way to easily reconcile the edits.

Ohhhh, sorry about that. The warning is currently not implemented for audio transcripts. I need to add that soon.

On a related matter, text diffing (so you can easily tell what differences were made between two transcript versions) has been on my to-do list for a long time. Still hoping to get that added at some point.

Over the next couple days I'll work on 1) getting the warning to show up on audio pages, and 2) adding the ability to view/revert to old audio transcripts.

(update) Do you know what's wrong with the history tags, or how to get to an old transcript manually? The code looks nearly identical but the links don't work. I've been waiting on that to add back the headings and other changes I made to the Operation Pauline podcast.

The general guideline is to favor clarity over accuracy. So if there are a bunch, I usually just leave in one or two unless they stutter so bad that like, that becomes prevalent in their conversation. You can also just put (stutters) or [stumbles] or something in tags, you don't necessarily have to write out every exact syllable that they make when they're struggling with the words. Thanks for your help!

You're amazing!  I think I'm still going to struggle with their voices until I've heard them for a while (sorry if I've transcribed anything wrong, and major, major props to you and your ears, haha, you've been doing such an incredible job with the Podcast Because Awesome transcripts!) but this is really helpful.

The voices are tricky. I think it took me three episodes just to remember what Paul and Joe sound like, and there are still a few voices I can't place.

There's a guy named Mike who has a lower voice but I don't know who he is so I can't grab a sample and there's at least one other girl, one called Tessa and probably like three others that I just guessed on. I have no idea on those tbh.

Also, I'm not sure what you use for transcribing but I find just using headphones instead of my crappy speakers helps me hear a lot that I miss otherwise. I don't think I really hear better than anyone else, but the headphones help me a lot, especially for podcasts and mumbly Katherine in let's plays.

Of course, it also helps to just get used to their voices which of course just takes practice. I definitely found this key helpful in that respect, so I figured it was worth it to put together even if nobody else used it. :)

On a related note, the split transcripts only mark an edit if a section is marked as complete, so a people are not getting full credit for their work if they only do part of a section. (Shoutout to runalovegood [from what I can tell] for transcribing most of the Podcast Because Awesome Black Cat in DC episode)

Yeah, this looks like an issue. I have a partial fix for it right now, but I'm still working on getting a full fix.
