Site Updates 2014/9/29
This actually covers the past week, I suppose.
- As previously mentioned, the collaborative transcript feature, which allows multiple users to choose small pieces of a video and transcribe them simultaneously. Right now these need to be setup in advance by admins.
- Some of the site's design is cleaned up slightly. Particularly modal windows (like the Submit Video/Category box).
- Performance should be improved in a few spots, but not in any drastic way.
- The site now supports SSL. It's not enabled by default (at the moment), but you can go to https://nerdfighteria.info if you'd like.
A lot of code had to be reworked for some of these, so let me know if you notice anything broken.
Just poking around I noticed two minor bugs:
- admin video captions feature doesn't do anything (not sure if I just don't know what I'm doing and it's actually working fine)
- channel icons have disappeared when hovering over videos link
- The captions stuff doesn't do much. It's mostly a way for Valerie to keep track of which videos she's added captions to.
- That's... something I should've caught before. Fixed now.
Thanks!
Quick question: What's the difference between regular and SSL?
SSL encrypts the communication betwen your computer and the wiki. For most users, this doesn't make any sort of difference, but if for whatever reason you're particularly worried about your security/privacy on the internet, using the SSL version of the site can help with that.
It may also help get around website filters. Like say there's a filter on your computer that blocks websites that use sex terminology on the page, so Sexplanations transcripts would get blocked. You may be able to use the SSL version of the wiki to get around that block.
If a video has been locked does that mean that the proofread function will no longer work for it?
That is most likely true, and most likely something I overlooked. I'll see how easy that is to fix...

I spent the weekend coding a new feature for the wiki to make longer transcripts easier, by making it more collaborative. The first transcripts I’m testing this with are John and Hank’s appearances on Ear Biscuits. Each transcript is broken into five-minute chunks.
If anyone wants to start transcribing these sections, and also just test out the feature in general…
John’s episode: http://nerdfighteria.info/splittranscript/102
Hank’s episode: http://nerdfighteria.info/splittranscript/101
Awesome!
I want to include the hanklerfish comic somewhere.
Should I start a new section for stuff like that, or keep it under the Hanklerfish one?
I'd say you can put it under Projects, under Dictionary, or under Hanklerfish. Any of that would be fine.
For some reason this video's transcript won't let me edit it/ When I click edit the box just turns blank.

There was some HTML saved with the transcript that was causing issues. This should be fixed now.
It appears that Crash Course: Big History is now coming out on the Crash Course channel after appearing on the Big History channel. I assume this means we should remove the videos that are from the Big History channel but should we remove them all at once or should we replace them as they come out?
Yeah, we should probably do something about that. I think we should leave the BigHistoryProject videos up until the associated CrashCourse video is added. Then we can move the transcript to the new one and deactivate the old one.

I've made some updates lately that I haven't mentioned here yet.
- The "Caption Info" page for each channel now works. It'd been sitting there broken for months. It'll now let you view which videos for a channel have English captions added to them and which don't. This is isn't automatic, though -- the caption status is updated manually by admins.
- Admin feature: There's also a caption page added to the admin section.
- The password reset page works again. It'd been broken since the server move.
- I added Bill Gates to the credits list. I don't anticipate he'll be in many more videos, but it's nice to have a discrete list of the ones he's in.
- Email works again? Idk. That was broken for a while.
- Added a transcription stats page for each channel. This'll give some rough stats on how long it's been taking to get videos for that channel transcribed in English.
- Reorganized the channel page slightly. The "General" section was getting too long so I broke it in two.
- There was some stealth vandalism on the wiki recently, so I built a basic automated flagging system. Whenever a user saves a transcript, it'll test the transcript against a few rules. It'll still save regardless, but it may get flagged for an admin to review later. This is handled in the Admin area.
- I added Frankstein, MD kind of recently. Due to some complications, I don't think the videos get added automatically. I suspect one of the admins is adding them manually, but I'm not sure who. If you're reading this and it's you, thank you!
Hi, I'm new to transcribing and was wondering, what happens once I click complete on a transcription, does it get automatically added to the video on youtube because I just checked the video on youtube and there is no transcription present...
Thanks, DFTBA :)
It won't get added to the video automatically. If it's Vlogbrothers / CrashCourse / SciShow / Space (and maybe one or two other channels), Valerie will manually add it to the video whenever she can. If it's The Brain Scoop or Sexplanations, they handle their on-video subtitles themselves (not using the wiki), but it's still useful for other reasons to transcribe it here.
I upload captions for Vlogbrothers, SciShow, SciShow Space, The Art Assignment, Sexplanations, Animal Wonders, and Crash Course, although I'm behind on some of these. I believe Mike Martin uploads captions to How to Adult videos as well!
I had a thought and I just wanted to post it here - has nerdfighteria thought about making an app so that we can be alerted when a new nerdfighteria video has been put up, without having to sign up for email alerts? Philip DeFranco has one, and I just thought it'd be a cool thing for us to think about. Not that I have any power to decide whether or not we create it, but if someone who has the authority to make that decision or discuss this with Hank and John would like to discuss this, that would be cool.
Anyways. Yeah. Just an idea.
DFTBA,
Lexi :)
There is an app for Kindle Fire called 'DFTBA App' that I have that gives you alerts whenever a new video from vlogbrothers, Crash Course, SciShow, etc. comes out within about a minute of ir going up. You can also change which channels you want to receive alerts from, view latest videos, watch their videos, etc. Apparently the same app is also available in the Google Play Store and has the same features. There's also the 'Nerdfighters All In One' app on Google Play, but I'm not sure if you can get alerts with it. As far as I can tell, Apple does not have an app for Nerdfighteria in the App Store. But, if you sign up to transcribe for a channel on here, you also get email alerts that come out very fast, just like the DFTBA App. Hope that this helps! DFTBA!
Ah, unfortunately I do not have a Kindle Fire or an Android, and I don't want to sign up for email alerts. But that's so awesome! Thank you for informing me! :D
Hi,
Someone modified the "War and Civilization: Crash Course World History 205" video whilst I was transcribing it, and so I'm sorry if I saved over your work!
