Site Update 2017/1/23

I'm working to get everything cleaned up that people have been pointing out.

  • The page titles are somewhat fixed. They're generic right now, I'll work on getting them to mention the page name itself later on. But at least they aren't showing a file name anymore.
  • Transcribed and Untranscribed pages should be working now for Channels and Categories.
  • Re-arranged the Channels nav a bit. Podcasts is now listed under Main. I always liked Vlogbrothers having a column to itself, but with so many channels now, can't really afford to waste that space.
  • The Admin->Accept Lowercase button works now.
  • Links should now display correctly in transcripts.
  • The Suggestions page is almost back. You can start using it if you'd like. Still need to add a link somewhere. For now it's basically just a duplicate of the Discussion page, since I haven't added voting, accepting, or rejecting back into it. But posting/replying should work fine.

I'm currently developing the new Flags section. The plan is for it to be two tabs on the proofread page. One tab will be timed flags (?~1:11) and the other for untimed flags (?). I'm hoping I can do something pretty interactive with the timed flags tab, where they can be corrected without leaving the screen. Untimed flags will probably just link back to the video.

Immediate to-do list also includes improving the Search Results page.

In the last five seconds I've decided to add a warning to the discussion page if you leave without saving a post, because I just did that.

Thanks everyone for testing things out.
videodude13 on 2017 Jan 24 13:45
Here's some of the things I've found. Some of them may be bugs, some of them may just be me looking in the wrong place for a feature or just missing the obvious.

On the old site on recent videos you could click back through all of the videos from the channel. Currently you only see the most recent 20. Is the only way to see all of the videos to go to video statistics?

When looking at a videos page when the window is taking up half the screen not all of the tabs (such as info, edit e.t.c.) appear. This means that to edit the transcipt I need to make the window fullscreen (or just a bit larger) for the tab to appear.

This videos says it is being transcribed collabaritvely but only has one section that isn't the length of the video.
https://nerdfighteria.info/v/42NG62fjAuQ/

The collabartive transcriptions don't seem to be working. I click on select section and nothing happens.

The most recent podcast came out and I normally split it up into two minute sections but I could see no way of doing this.

The send PM button on people's accounts doesn't seem to work.

Is the linking betwen video credits and articles coming back?
kitchensink108 on 2017 Jan 24 16:10
A bunch of these should be fixed now.
  • PM tab on User Pages is fixed. It was only working on your own page before, so you could only send yourself a PM.
  • The issue with collabs only having one section is fixed.
  • The issue with collabs just not working should be fixed.
  • I've added the option to generate a collab to the video page (admin section).
  • I also added the ability to deactivate any existing collabs (video admin).
  • The issue with tabs not appearing on smaller windows... That was part of a designed feature, to simplify the site when viewed on a phone or something. I've modified this to display on a wider range of screen sizes, though, so hopefully it works better for you now.

Article<=>Credit linking will probably be coming back in the near future.

I'm unsure yet what I'm doing for the Channels page. I could make the Recent Videos page-able. Or I could add a section for "All videos." I'll likely end up doing something to improve that, I just haven't decided what yet.
videodude13 on 2017 Jan 24 18:31
Thanks for the updates and all your hard work. I tried to split the latest podcast into chunks and got this message:

Notice: Trying to get property of non-object in /home/barrkj/public/nerdfighteria.info/public/_views/collaborative/view.php on line 4

It seems to now think that the podcast is being transcribed collaboratively but when you click to transcribe it pops up the same message.

Also is there a way for admins to add words straight to the dictionary? It was a text list before and I would occaisionally add words straight in to skip the transcribe panel. If not don't worry about it. Sort out more important things first.
kitchensink108 on 2017 Jan 24 23:31
Okay, collab stuff is fixed (again). Collab was working fine, it was an issue with the podcasts being added to the wiki. It misread the duration of the podcast, and everything got wonky from there. That's fixed, and it looks like it's correctly auto-generating a collab transcript when adding new videos.

I'll add the ability to insert words directly into the dictionary. Not quite yet, but I can definitely add that in the near future.
kitchensink108 on 2017 Jan 21 18:46
New site is live

Later on I'll make a comprehensive post of new things, deprecated things, and things-in-progress. But the new site is now live. I'll be testing and fixing things tonight and tomorrow, and hopefully then everything will be cleaned up enough to make a more formal announcement. As always let me know if anything's obviously broken. There were definitely some hiccups launching the site this morning, but things have (mostly) come together.
videodude13 on 2017 Jan 22 21:41
Is the function where you can see transcripts with (?) in them or the time-stamped version still available? I can't seem to find it.
videodude13 on 2017 Jan 22 21:49
Also it seems that the credits for th podcasts haven't transferred over and I can't see any way of removing credits or categories from videos.
kitchensink108 on 2017 Jan 22 22:12
I just fixed the missing Podcasts. They were there, they just weren't visible in the nav.

Credits and categories should have a X button that appears next to them on hover. It's basically like the old method but less intuitive. I'll need to redesign that slightly.

There's no way to view (?) flags at the moment. That'll be coming back as soon as I figure out how I want to handle them on the new site. The feature's always had a lot of unused potential, so I want to see if there's an easy way to make that feature really powerful, or if I just need to re-implement how I had it before.
Freakazette on 2017 Jan 22 22:42
I'm sure you're just not finished and part of this might be my browser or whatever but I'm noticing a few weird things so here's what I've got.

  • First of all, this box has like a million boxes inside of it, like every place there was supposed to be a single border has three.
  • the banner is all smooshed. THe "nerdfighteria wiki" part looks fight but the gang sign emblem is all squashed flat and stretched out
  • the "Untranscribed/transcribed videos" tabs on channel pages are yielding no results
  • I'm not sure if the search is working properly. I tried to search for "Mneumonics" because I was transcribing the SciShow memory compilation and I wanted to see if the original video had been transcribed but nothing came up. It should come up from the title.
  • You seem to only be able to filter by categories on channel pages now, I'm not sure if that was intentional or what. (also do you think these could either be one to a line or in clear rows? It's kinda hard to read as is.)

Nitpicky stuff:
  • In the channel menu, the last column to the left is way longer than the others. I think probably side channels is meant to go under main but idk.
  • Also in the channel menu, some of the items have the first word of the name to the right of the picture instead of it all being below. Also It would be nice if the pictures were links and not just the words.
  • How are the channels being sorted in the dropdown on the transcribe/proofread page? Can they be alphabetical or something? I'd understand putting Vlogbros first but current order makes no sense.
  • the video window, fo me at least, is a bit too big for the video page and pushes over to the right of the screen
  • the nitpickiest of all, in your guide thing linked from the homepage, the boxes don't have bottom borders.
kitchensink108 on 2017 Jan 22 22:53
Freakazette, would you mind refreshing the page and seeing if any of the design issues are fixed? Maybe also clear your cache (ctrl+f5). A lot the issues sound like caching issues, where it's trying to use the styles of the old site on the new site. I just made a change that'll hopefully correct most of that.

Channel dropdown order: Um, I'm not sure how they're being sorted. I know how they're supposed to be sorted, but I think something went wrong with that yesterday. It'll get fixed. It should be ordered by name.

I'll take a look at the Transcribed/Untranscribed pages. I can't remember if those are supposed to be working or if they're a work-in-progress.
Freakazette on 2017 Jan 22 23:11
I tried to do F5 earlier and it didn't fix it but most of the formatting stuff looks better now. The only thing you didn't mention that still looks like a thing is the video size on video pages.
kitchensink108 on 2017 Jan 22 23:21
Cool. I'll see if there's a way to do more intelligent video sizing, but if it's not interefering too much right now, I'm not going to make it priority.

I think I also (literally just now) fixed a bug with discussion post notifications, where previous posts would just be your post over and over again. I also fixed the thing where you'd receive notifications for your own post. I'll be using this post to test whether those two fixes actually worked.

Also, a few general admin pages are up. Spellchecker, Media, Categories, and Credits. You can also now submit Credits on the same page that you submit Videos/Categories.
Freakazette on 2017 Jan 22 23:24
Two more. For some reason paragraphs aren't working, just on this one script. You can also see on here that links are displaying a little funny in scripts. I checked and this is not just on newly edited scripts, but doesn't seem to affect mail links.
stephenwade on 2017 Jan 23 23:30
The page titles are a little confused. They have long filenames at the end. For example, the title tag for the homepage is:

Nerdfighteria Wiki - /home/barrkj/public/nerdfighteria.info/public/_views/home/view.php
Freakazette on 2017 Jan 24 01:31
I'm trying to test a little bit of everything so I just did some proofreading. Mostly it looks to be working OK. There is a thing where it will include a partial word that needs to be corrected in the same box as the whole work it belongs to. For example in SciShow Host Showdown someone used " 'xplain" to show how he was pronouncing the word. I would have changed it to 'splain which is how I've always seen it but the same box included an instance of "explain" which would then, I assume, change to esplain if I tried to change it from that box.

I approved a bunch of the pending words but "accept lowercase" doesn't appear to be working.

Also I think you probably just haven't got to the transcribed videos pages yet but I did notice that new videos seem to be defaulting to "transcribed" so that will need to be addressed at some point.

Rewrite update 2017/1/18

I'm still targeting Saturday for launch. But I was working on Groups and Collab yesterday and realized that neither one was as far along as I'd hoped. I got Groups mostly cleaned up, it just needs some more re-styling in places.

I'm working on Collab right now. I should be able to get it pretty near completion by Saturday. With that in mind, though, I'm looking at more of a soft launch on Saturday. Meaning, the new site will go live, but I'll wait a day or two (or three) before announcing the new site anywhere.

The features still in dev (like Collab) aren't quite as important for day-to-day transcription, but just in case John or Hank gets in on it, that could lead to a large influx of users running into broken/incomplete features. So the new site will launch, I'll continue working on high priority features, and that'll also give users a small amount of time to let me know if anything's horribly broken. Once that's all cleared up, then I'll announce the new site on Tumblr or wherever else.

Rewrite update 2017/1/14

Apparently I only made the last update two days ago? It feels like a lot's happened since then.

  • Made the channel admin
  • Made the category admin
  • Copied the guide from the current site
  • Added the recent changes page
  • Added category/video submit
  • Added stub pages for calendar, data export
  • Enabled transcript saving and hooked the spellchecker into it
  • Enabled posting to the discussion board (this is being posted from the current site though)

I also merged some podcast data, so you can see how those look on the new site. I may have made some other changes too, but I can't remember.

Anyway, the point is that there's not a lot left to do before the new site goes live. Because of that, I'm aiming to do the switchover next weekend. That would be Saturday Jan 21. If everything keeps looking good, I'll put a notice on the site a day or two before letting users know that the site will be down for much of Saturday.

My biggest priorities between now and then are:

  1. Hook email notifications into everything that uses them
  2. Fix some style issues, especially on the Groups pages

Let me know if there are any other major things you think I should get working before launch.

Freakazette on 2017 Jan 15 19:26

I notice that you haven't got all of the split transcript stuff in yet either so maybe you just haven't gotten to it, but will you be adding back in the magic button that converts youtube captions? I noticed there's an AF button but it does paragraphs but doesn't get rid of timestamps. I was using this feature, but it's not a huge deal to pop it into word to get rid of them if you're not keeping that feature on the new site.

kitchensink108 on 2017 Jan 16 01:46

The YT caption button will be coming back. I'm not sure yet if it'll be merged into the AF button, or added somewhere else, but I'm planning on getting it back in before launch.

I'd like to get collab working for launch. I'd been holding off on some of it, because there's some dev I can only do for it the day of launch (so I don't mess up any existing data). If it's not done by then, it'll be one of the top priorities post-launch.

videodude13 on 2017 Jan 16 14:15

Finally got a chance to look at it. It looks really nice. I couldn't see anything wrong with it. Keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to the launch. Will Hank/John be announcing the new launch at all?

kitchensink108 on 2017 Jan 17 03:59

The AutoFormat button now converts YT transcripts again. It was actually a bug that was preventing it from doing it before. There's a hidden feature on the new site that strips out all html when you copy & paste into the editor. That should help prevent issues from when people have copied & pasted from Word. That was interfering with the YT conversion, but that's fixed now.

That's working, and I also got email notifications working, so tomorrow I'll either clean up the Groups Browse page or work on collab transcription.

Once the new site is up and running, I'll probably make a post on Tumblr. Sometimes John or Hank (or effyeahnerdfighters) will reblog those from me. That's the most I'd expect either of them to announce it, but we'll see. I guess the point is, maybe they will, but I'm not directly talking to them about it.

kitchensink108 on 2017 Jan 12 21:34

Re-write update

I'm still working on the site rewrite. There's still a lot of work to do, but most of the base functionality is in place. If anyone wants to check it out, you can play around with it at beta.nerdfighteria.info.

A couple notes for anyone that ventures over:

  • Some functionality is purposely broken right now. Things like saving transcripts, since I don't want the beta site messing with too much of the main site's data.
  • It's using some outdated data. The most obvious is the videos and transcripts. That stuff, plus things like transcript histories, will all be brought up-to-date when the site launches.

But if anyone wants to see how it's coming along, feel free to check it out. If anything seems obviously wrong, you can let me know. It might just be because I'm still working on it though.

Freakazette on 2017 Jan 13 01:08

Wheeeee!
Initial thoughts:

  • It's so pretty!
  • "Read about all the ways you can help out by clicking here." is not a link yet
  • transcript queue isn't kicking out livestreams like it has before so that's all that shows on the transcribe/homepage right now
  • Collaborative tab! =D
  • Groups site is integrated! Cool!
  • On the discussion page, I like that you can click on a post and see all of the comments below it.
  • no suggestions? admin?
  • I love the big buttons in site preferences
  • aaahhh I see admin on channel and video pages

I like it so far!

kitchensink108 on 2017 Jan 13 01:32
  • For the thing that's not a link, it's on my to-do list but I'm pretty sure if there's one big thing I completely forget to do before the site launches, it's gonna be that.
  • Ah, I thought something looked weird about the transcript queue, but I hadn't looked closely enough to realize it was all the livestreams. I'll be fixing that at some point.
  • Collab tab: if nothing else comes from this rewrite, at least I'll have found a better name for that than "split transcripts."
  • Groups site: This is one of those things where halfway through the rewrite I think "oh, that might be a good idea" and then it adds like a full week of work. I'm excited about having it more integrated, though.
  • Suggestions and Admin will definitely be coming back. Admin first. Suggestions may be delayed a bit longer... it's a little lower priority because there's still so much work that I already know I need to do, but it'll be back. Also certain admin functions will come back quicker than others (this is something that would be good to get input on: which admin features should be highest priority?)

Thanks for the feedback!

Freakazette on 2017 Jan 13 05:31

I think the highest priority admin stuff should be the items directly on video pages, then video manager, spellcheck manager, maybe category manager (those and channels don't change that often so they can come later)

Also I just realized there doesn't seem to be a thing for podcasts? Maybe it will be in other stuff? It could probably go in a section in the channel banner. Idk

(PS Sorry I posted this as its own thing earlier, my bad)

kitchensink108 on 2017 Jan 13 21:18

Yeah, I want to at least get activate/deactivate on everything (videos, categories, etc). Most admin stuff is pretty simple, so I'm hoping I get most of it back pretty quickly, but it'll definitely help to focus on stuff like that.

Podcasts are merging with videos. They'll get their own section in the nav, but they'll otherwise be treated just like youtube channels and videos. This simplifies a lot of stuff, so new features added to videos will automatically take effect on podcasts as well.

Unfortunately I can't merge all the back-end data until right before the new site goes live, which is why you don't see any of that right now. But it'll all be there.

kitchensink108 on 2016 Oct 19 04:31

Site Announcement

tl;dr the wiki is being rewritten from scratch. This will take a few months, and in the short-term more features will be going away than being added. Check out this survey to vote on what should come back quickest.

Some major changes are coming to the wiki. Some users may remember way-back-when, when the site was orange and green and felt like Wikipedia. That was Version 1. It's currently Version 2, a custom-coded site to be more flexible and support multiple channels. And now I'm developing Version 3.

The wiki's grown and changed in a lot of ways over the past few years, and whenever that happens to a site, the code gets all spaghetti'd. It gets increasingly difficult to add new features or fix existing features, and things are more likely to break.

Instead of trying to clean up the existing code, I'm dumping it all and rewriting it from scratch. Again. Already things are so much cleaner, and the code is so much more enjoyable to work with. Here are the main targets of the rewrite:

  • Cleaner, easier-to-manage code that I'm not embarrassed by.
  • A layout that works much better on phones and tablets.
  • A simplified layout that doesn't confuse as many people.
  • Better handling of podcasts, so podcasts and videos all get the same features. Right now features need to be developed independently for each.
  • Better logging. More actions can be logged, making things like the Recent Changes page more powerful.
  • Fewer and more transparent errors. More types of failure or success messages can be shown to the user, and errors will be better prevented/handled.

However, in the process of this the site will also be streamlined. Old features and obscure features will be removed. Some of these will come back, some will not. I've put up a survey if you'd like to give input on which features should come back. Among them...

  • Anonymous editing (editing without an account)
  • Viewing non-English transcripts
  • Viewing which languages a channel's videos have been translated into
  • Setting a default transcript language your account
  • Viewing recent changes for a specific channel
  • Random video (for all videos)
  • Random video (for one channel)
  • Calendar view
  • Custom search / data export
  • Bulk-adding videos to a specific category
  • Users (non-admins) submitting categories
  • Users (non-admins) submitting videos
  • Associating an article to a category
  • Associating an article to a channel
  • Displaying the content of one article on another article
  • Creating split transcripts based on a set number of chunks (instead of specifying how long each chunk should be)
  • Paging on the discussion board (only the 10-20 most recent threads will be visible)

There's a couple months at best before this goes live. Probably longer. So there'll be a lot of time for input, and also some time for beta testing. Initially it'll be rough, with lots of things breaking here and there, but it should get smoothed out quickly. And unlike the transition from Version 1 -> Version 2, no data will be lost this time. All user accounts, edit histories, etc. will carry over.

Also note that this is my main focus for the site. I'm not adding anything new to the current site, and I'm planning to only fix big things that come up. Small bugs will be fixed in the new site.

This is the main reason I was really active on the site a few months ago, then suddenly dropped off. This idea was floating around in my mind, and I finally decided to go for it. So let me know your thoughts, and we'll see how it goes.

Freakazette on 2016 Oct 19 13:35

Sweet! I am mostly neutral on those features, so I will abstain from the survey.

If it still matters, spellchecker has been acting weird. The first time you use it it will show a box with code, you just have to click through and then it will work properly for a while.

example from CrashCourse Physics #27 (and I really hope pasting this here doesn't break the site)

[post edited by kitchensink108 to remove code that wasn't formatting correctly]
stephenwade on 2016 Oct 20 15:23

Have you considered open-sourcing the code for the site on GitHub? I'd love to dive in and see how things work, and maybe even contribute bug fixes.

Just a thought :p

kitchensink108 on 2016 Dec 23 05:04

Hey there. Sorry for not responding to you two earlier, I didn't notice this post had any replies. Only a couple months late :)

stephen - I might consider open sourcing it, or at least parts of it. So far things are going pretty well and I'm significantly less embarrassed/self-conscious about this code than the current site's code. The current site is like a car held together by duct tape and it's better if just no one sees that.

Freakazette - considering I haven't touched that code in the past two months, I assume it's still broken. I'll keep it mind when recoding that stuff for the new site.

Update on the progress of the rewrite: it's hard to gauge when it'll be done because I do things like stop developing for a month so I can play Civilization VI. But it's coming along nicely when I am working on it, and I'm hoping in a month or so I can link to a preview version; it won't be completely functional but people can start taking a look and let me know if I've made any horrible decisions.

I figured out a way to re-include some of the features that were on the chopping block (calendar, random vid, etc). So there's a better chance for some of those features to come back, but I'm not targetting them to be ready by the time the site goes live.

vivithenerd on 2016 Oct 16 22:40

Hi! I'm new and am wondering what the site needs me to do most.

Freakazette on 2016 Oct 17 04:15

Proofreading is always helpful. Most of the highest priority channels are caught up aside from a video or two. Mental Floss, Healthcare Triage, and Animal Wonders have a healthy backlog if you have time to transcribe, or the podcast if you're up for a real challenge. Thanks for your help! =)

You are welcome, good sir/madam. *bow*

I was wondering when Hank's new Harry Potter Song is coming out, or if he's doing one at all. Thanks for reading this one.

Freakazette on 2016 Oct 12 04:28

I know that Hank used to make one every year but I think he stopped after the movies stopped coming out. The anniversary that he released them on was in July so it would have been out already for this year. On tour he had a bit about how good he was at making predictions in his songs and he sang one about JK coming to hang out with him at his house, but the most recent one on the channel is Oh, JK Rowling from 2013.

216.x.x.146 on 2016 Oct 15 16:12

Thank you so sooooooo much!!!!

Freakazette on 2016 Sep 11 14:03

I hate to do this to you again but I have another bug to report. When I edit podcasts the changes don't appear in recent changes or on my page. It looks like it will count it from a split transcript when you mark a section complete but not from the normal box. See Dear Hank and John 37 The Floridiest Place and 48 Pizza John Priorities. There were others but I assumed it was because when I do the formatting on the podcasts it results in a technical loss of characters so I thought it was ignoring negative changes.

kitchensink108 on 2016 Sep 12 01:12

This is fixed now. It was actually a good catch because it was an issue that could've been causing other issues as well without anyone noticing. So if it was, that's all taken care of.

Freakazette on 2016 Sep 22 04:22

I don't think the thing that automatically makes split transcripts is working. Check out the latest episode of SciShow Talk Show

merelylittleme on 2016 Oct 12 02:32

I'm seeing the same issue. The 2016 Nerdfighteria Census Analysis isn't a split transcript either

kitchensink108 on 2016 Sep 13 17:35

I just added 100 Days, and now I think is a good time to re-visit the idea of re-organizing the menu.

First, I might start stacking categories on top of each other, so that the menu can support more categories. For example, Gaming and Adaptations could be in the same column. I really don't want the menu taller or wider, so now it becomes a matter of fitting more into the space it already has.

Second is determining what (if any) new categories should be created.

Ideas:

  • Health: Healthcare Triage, Sexplanations, 100 Days
  • Life/Living: How to Adult, The Financial Diet, 100 Days, maybe Sexplanations
  • Conventions: NerdCon, VidCon
  • Instructional: How to Adult, 100 Days, How to Vote, The Financial Diet

Thoughts on any of these, or other suggestions?

Freakazette on 2016 Sep 13 20:18

I don't know how you feel about this but I had been thinking that maybe you could remove defunct channels from the menu bar like Truth or Fail or the Adaptations section and that would free up some room. I think stacking is fine for smaller categories as long as there's a clear delineation.

For categories:

  • I like Health, and would add engage by uplift (as long as we're not excluding defunct channels as it appears to be abandoned)
  • I like Life/living better than Instructional but I can't think of enough things to fill it out
  • Maybe instead of Conventions call it Community or something and add DFTBA records (that's not a very good name, but I think it fits pretty well with those)

That will make your longest category education with eight or nine channels. For stacking, obviously numbers will change what goes where but probably Education on its own, Main/side channels together, Community and Culture together, and if you get rid of adaptations that leaves Health and Gaming together.
