Hey,
Since some of the entries are more edited and updated than others, do you think we should make a system in where a group of nerdfighters are responsible for a certain section of the wiki and its updating and editing? That way we don't have to dig through piles upon piles of articles to look for articles needing updating and dusting off (grammar & spelling) the stubs and everything in between.
Edit: 1 group for each category.

Yes, that's a good point. Anyone with other ideas on how to fix the lack of content on the wiki, feel free to jump in. We should be getting some more advertising from effyeahnerdfighters in the near future, so I'm hoping that'll help, but having a plan in place before then would be good, too.
AyoDftba on 2014 Apr 19 21:11
I've all ready made a "Nerdfighter Wiki Editors" group and the only people there are SeekerHallows and me.

Can we have a language option for every country in the world?
kitchensink108 on 2014 Apr 18 00:39
Not really. There are somewhere around 200 countries, and tens of thousands of languages. I'd prefer people not bother translating into languages like classical Latin or Dothraki. If anyone wants something like Swahili, I'd be glad to add it, but I don't want people to have to choose from a list of every language or every country, even if it's limited to "alive" languages.

I've been considering re-organizing the channels dropdown a little more. My thoughts right now are possibly making a new category, "Cultural," that would contain channels like The Art Assignment, mental_floss, and possibly How To Adult, which tend to be focused more on cultural topics than purely educational topics.
The goal would be to reduce the length of the Educational list, as it's a little long right now and will probably only get longer.

Bobidou23 on 2014 Apr 13 19:58
I had a few other ideas, but they don't quite work out:
- Starring John/Hank: crashcourse, scishow, mental_floss
- Sponsored by one of them: brainscoop, sexplanation, healthcare
- But grey areas: artassignment, howtoadult?
- Made by the Indianapolis team: mentalfloss, healthcare, artassignment
- Made by the Missoula team: scishow, brainscoop, sexplanations
- But grey areas: crashcourse, howtoadult
AyoDftba on 2014 Apr 17 20:16
Well, crashcourse is made by BOTH the Missoula and Indianapolis DFTBA Teams.

Could we discuss the transcription schedule a bit? I would like for there to be a few words at the top describing what signing up for a schedule entails; does the following sound good?
- The schedule is only for future videos - past videos can be addressed once this schedule is filled.
- In the event that multiple people sign up for the same schedule, they should coordinate so that all future videos will be covered.
- Coordination can be done by putting a note at the top of an work-in-progress transcription - "I'll finish this one and all odd-numbered episodes", or "Whoever sees this can keep going", etc.
- You don't need to transcribe a video all at once; a few minutes each day over the week is enough - just soon enough that it is done before your next assigned video.
kitchensink108 on 2014 Jan 21 17:06
I mean, the whole schedule page needs some more work to make it actually useful. These explanations for how it works are a good start, and should be a really quick thing to add. I think at some point it needs new functionality as well, like notifying users when a video's uploaded on that user's schedule.
I'm open to any other suggestions about the schedule page, if anyone has more ideas.
Also, I just want to note that I've been taking a break from development. I'll be getting back into it soon, though.

Going back to Operation Resurrect the Schedule: I have a few thoughts that, again, probably contradict each other - I have one desire to add more stuff, and another to simplify and make the page more accessible.
- Is the bit at the top about "you don't have to do this immediately, but do it consistently";"we'll clear it after a few inactive weeks", etc. possible?
- Maybe email notifications for the user's schedule? That preferably isn't an opt-out-able choice, but a condition for signing up?
- A brief description box below each schedule for admins - to write something brief, about whether they usually offer captions, how frequent the videos are, etc.
- Could schedule details be editable (like adding/changing day of the week)?
- Also, the page seems to me interminably long - could something change, like each schedule becomes more like a box than a line?
- Could there be a weekly schedule view? I don't know if that could help, but it would be interesting.
kitchensink108 on 2014 Apr 15 02:50
- We can add a message at the top.
- I have that coded already on the new version of the site. I still need to test it, but it's there. If the user is signed up, and if the user has an email address on the site, they'll get a notification reminding them to transcribe (no opt-out for that). This does not, however, work with category-based schedules yet. Since categories get added by users, I can't send emails to user's when a video is added since that video doesn't have any categories yet. If I add the rule-based auto-categorization idea that's been thrown around before, this becomes more possible, but until then this notifier will only work for channel-based and day-based schedules.
- I could add some optional field there.
- I'm not sure if I want to add this. I like the idea that the only way to change a schedule is to delete and re-create it, because otherwise a user could end up being volunteered for something they can't do. Like a user who can only transcribe on Fridays, so they choose a Friday schedule, I don't want to change that to a Monday on them. I mean, I could add schedule editing and then we just clear the schedule each time it's edited, but that sounds like essentially the same thing as delete/recreate.
- Yeah, it could use some re-organization. I'm not sure how yet, but I'll think about that.
- This sounds similar to the on-and-off idea of merging the features of the Vlogbrothers Archive into the wiki. I'd like to add some sort of calendar-view someday, but we'll see if I get around to it.
videodude13 on 2014 Apr 01 21:21
Now that SciShow Space has launched, is there anyway to add the videos to the site. It could be part of the SciShow channel page or its own. Is it going to be added?

I'll be adding SciShow Space as a new channel in the next few days (or this weekend). I'd recommend referring to it as "SciShow Space" on wiki pages.

I was wondering if there would be a way to categorise videos by how many different users have edited the transcript?
I have no idea how this would work and it's probably ridiculously complicated, but at the moment a lot of inaccurate transcripts aren't being checked because they're marked as complete, whereas the more accurate transcripts have several different users in the history.
I'm not sure how other users would feel about this but I think it would be pretty useful.

216.x.x.146 on 2014 Apr 08 04:13
I second that. It honestly shouldn't be that difficult - but that's coming from someone from a Java background, not a javascript one.
Bobidou23 on 2014 Apr 12 01:03
That's an interesting point. I don't know if transcript quality is necessarily correlated with the number of users who edited... but I think some sort of peer-reviewing system ("x number of people have to confirm this is complete and accurate") would be nice.
kitchensink108 on 2014 Apr 12 19:51
I'd been considering adding a thing where admins could lock transcripts, with the intention that any user could still transcribe or mark complete, but admins could lock it (or some other term, "approved" or "finalized" or something).
As far as the programming is concerned, sorting a list of videos by the number of unique editors or total number of edits wouldn't be difficult, though the idea of admin-locking or Bobidou's peer-reviewing suggestion would likely would better.
Regardless, something should get added. I'm trying to make it easier to deal with flags and misspellings, but that won't catch poor formatting or transcripts incorrectly marked as complete.

Responding to the Youtube Abuse Situation
This may seem a little after-the-fact, as the majority of discussion has died down at this point. But a user contacted me regarding Alex Day's wiki page, so I think it's about time we have some sort of semi-official stance on this.
For anyone that's missed it, several big-name Youtubers / nerdfighters / wizard rockers were accused of (and some confessed to) sexual assault and abuse against their fans and other members of the community. DFTBA Records has responded by removing these people from their store.
At least two people implicated in this have entries on the wiki here: Alex Day and Tom Milsom. There are a number of different paths we can take, so I'd like to see what others feel is the most appropriate action. Some ideas...

- Remove the entries on those who have had credible claims made against them, as we should not be essentially advertising for sexual abusers.
- Keep the entries but update them to include this information, as this site is supposed to be informative, and (like Wikipedia) should not be opinionated in its dissemination of information.
- A little bit of both, where entries remain up and are updated with recent news, but links to their websites are removed.
non sequitur on 2014 Apr 03 01:27
I have not been directly involved with this situation and if anyone who has been comes forward with a different opinion please disregard this immediately and abide by their requests
It is my understanding that the primary function of the wiki pages is to serve as a source of information about people and things connected to nerdfighteria. Although the by-products of this may include advertising for those people or things, this was not the purpose of the wiki. (If I'm wrong about that and the wiki pages were intended as a form of advertising then I would suggest that option one would be the best choice)
I think that the best course of action from here would be to keep the wiki pages up, but include the new information. This information should be objective and not have broad statements such as "x is a sexual abuser". Instead, they should be factual and informative statments about the events that occured (e.g. "sexual abuse allegations were raised against x in 2014. x later admitted to these allegations in [insert link to statement]") The wiki pages should not contain statements that explicitly discourage readers from acessing their products, as this is a personal viewpoint, not objective fact.
However, I also think that the links to their sites should be taken down. Although the intention of these links may not have been to advertise for their products, they do imply that we support them, which is not a message that I think this wiki should promote.
In the case of people who appear in multiple wiki entries, I think that all links which refer to sites solely used by and supporting them should be removed. However, I am unsure about what to do for links which include but are not limited to them, such as links to buy chameleon circuit/sons of admirals albums.
This is all just my opinion and it would be helpful if a lot of people could respond so that we could find the best course of action.

Thanks for you input, non sequitur. I agree with your points, and have done the following:
- Kept Alex's wiki entry live.
- Removed links to his personal sites.
- Updated the article with information regaring the abuse allegations (I didn't go into much detail, but it still accounts for half is entry now).
- I am not touching the entries for Chameleon Circuit or Sons of Admirals. I dont particularly mean for the wiki to be used as free advertising, but even so, I don't see that the other member of the bands should be "harmed" simply due to their association with Alex.

I'd like to see if we can work closer with that site. Sexplanations and The Brain Scoop are also using it, and while I'm trying my best to poach features from it, it still has its advantages and disadvantages over the wiki.
Unfortunately, the current Youtube API (v3) does not seem to (as far as I can tell) support grabbing the captions from a video. This was in v2, but that's been deprecated and I don't think the feature made it into the newer version. I think something can be done, but it may require more manual work and some direct communication with their site.
I already have some javascript for converting a SRT file (the format subtitl.us uses) to LRC (still has time information, but it's more readable). I'll be adding some more functions for converting SRT to plaintext and for auto-formatting paragraphs (very roughly, probably just splitting into paragraphs every three or four sentences. This will actually be useful for a lot of existing transcripts, as well). So that should make copying and pasting transcripts from elsewhere easier, but we'll still need a way to get access to those transcripts.

Sorry for asking so many questions, but what should we do if the person in the video says one thing, and then on-screen they have corrected it to another? (e.g. Mike Martin said "tax burden" and the on-screen text said "tax LIABILITY, which I said wrong") I just wrote
"tax burden (*liability)" but maybe I should change it to something else?
Also, in the most recent How To Adult video, there was a very short (like one or two seconds) clip of John from an old vlogbrothers video. Should I still credit John? What is our policy on crediting old footage that has been put in? Thanks and sorry for the constant stream of questions!

- Either correct it or do as you did. I like the transcripts to be accurate to the video, but it's more important that it be accurate in what they meant to say than what they did say.
- Ideas on this would be welcome, but I'd say dont credit him. In my mind, I try to ask myself "would someone looking for videos of John find this video useful?" or "would anyone be looking for this video because it contains this clip of John?" On both those, I think the answer for this situation would be a no.

I just realised that I've been using Australian spelling and I was wondering if I should a) Stop doing this and go back and change ones that I can, b) just stop doing it but don't bother changing them or c) continue using whichever spelling.
kitchensink108 on 2014 Mar 13 14:07
I could see an argument for either US or International spelling, but in the end I don't think it's very important. If anyone feels very strongly one way or another, feel free to chime in, but my suggestion is do whatever you're most comfortable with.
