Site Updates 2014/3/9

I'm planning on switching web hosts again. This'll probably happen in a couple days. I've been spending the weekend getting everything set up as much as I can. When the switchover happens, there'll be some downtime in order transfer all site data, point the domain to the new server, and get the automated jobs (adding new videos, etc.) functioning again.

No data should get lost during this, and the transition (besides the downtime) should be invisible for everyone. Despite my flimsy knowledge of what I'm doing, I anticipate everything going smoothly.
AyoDftba on 2014 Mar 10 17:58
So, tensions running high then?
kitchensink108 on 2014 Mar 13 14:12
Kind of. I'm actually going to change the plan a little.
  • The database will be moved over in the next couple days. The site will be offline for a short period, the data will be transferred to my new host, and the site will begin using the new database.
  • The domain, however, will continue pointing to the current host for the time being. I'm still configuring things there and adding some new features to the site, so I'd like to get all that done before switching the domain over.
Again, this shouldn't really affect anybody too much, but just in case anyone's curious what's going on.

Can we add a language option for Norwegian?
kitchensink108 on 2014 Mar 05 22:54
Yep, done. http://nerdfighteria.info/language/25

Can we add a language option for Ukranian?
It would be especially cool to get a translator for John's new video
kitchensink108 on 2014 Mar 05 02:59
Haha, I misread Hank's tweet as wanting to translate it into Ukrainian, so I already added the language option.
216.x.x.146 on 2014 Mar 05 03:50
no worries, glad it's an option. I put a note in the google doc, so hopefully someone sees!

Site Updates 2/25/2014
  • Fixed an issue where videos wouldn't display that page's URL if you were viewing on a category.
  • Upped the automator video resync from 10 videos at a time to 25.
  • Disabled "WhatImDoingRightNow." I still want side channels like that added at some point (particularly when they have "behind the scenes" footage), but the wiki isn't set up for that as well as I thought. Until some more development is done toward that, I've disabled that channel.
  • Disabled the keyboard shortcut to add a timestamp. As pointed out by non sequitur, this interfered with the equals key (used in adding video sections). My goals is to (at some point) add a separate "mode" of transcribing specific for timed transcripts. I can add an "insert timestamp" button if anyone thinks it'd be useful, but the timestamp shortcut was specifically inserting an LRC-compatible tag for timed transcripts.

Site Updates 2014/2/15
  • Added a popup when you hover over the recent videos on the homepage. This (roughly) shows the full video title, a bigger version of the thumbnail, when it was uploaded, and the first sentence of the description.
  • Fixed an issue that was still existing in Internet Explorer, where popups and dropdowns would overlap underneath Youtube videos. These should now appear above the video. This shouldn't have broken any video playing functionality.
  • Refactored a little more code...
  • Added a message at the top of the screen if you're on the beta site, just in case some users wander over there by accident.
  • Added a button below the transcript editor to reformat SRT-style timed transcripts. Some channels that do their own transcription/translation use SRT format, which doesn't look good on the wiki, so this improves that a little. I'm keeping the timestamps at the moment, because those (in general) are useful, but I'm considering either stripping them out entirely or converting them to LRC format.
  • Its placement replaces the "shortcuts enabled" link, which I moved above the form for greater visibility.
  • On a related matter, added all The Brain Scoop transcripts that Katie Kirby has done in English. Still need to get translations up though.
  • Fixed an IE alignment issue with the category name and the category remove link on videos.
  • Removed the "no categories available" link that appeared when all categories had already been added to a video.
  • Added a link at the button of the available categories list that will pop up the "submit category" form.
  • Added a maximum height to the video description box.
  • Fixed an issue with sorting on the Video Statistics page. Sorting by comment count and video duration work now.
  • Began collapsing the right side of the page by default on the Video Statistics page.
  • Added some basic icons to the wiki menu dropdown. They're just to make it look a little nicer (or less bland). The icons are in the code, so you can't change them on the Entry pages right now. There's a placeholder icon in case anything new gets added to the top level of the wiki.
That should be it. As always, let me know if you see any issues.

And not a moment too soon! Thank you, Hank, for the shout out, and thank you kitchensink, for the updates.
  • Which of these people do you think have been in enough videos to be added to the credits page?: Nick Jenkins, Stan and the Indianapolis crew, Hannah Hart, Craig, Grace, Charlie.
  • Should category names for Hankgames be reduced just to the game name, without the "Hank and Katherine play"?
  • Should there be a channel page for Project for Awesome? I added the brief vlogs and live show thing from 2010, but it feels weird at they should be separated from the other years.
  • Speaking of which, should we be cherry-picking only those vlogs from 2010 P4A that have John or Hank (which is what we're doing right now)? Or should we be adding all vlogs?
non sequitur on 2014 Feb 17 11:05
  • Also on credits: how about some of the TFiOS cast?
  • If John never plays them, perhaps that would be a good idea
  • I think it's okay as it is, but I think probably you and some other admins should decide that
  • I think all vlogs might get a bit too clogged up, but if you can find them all and think it's a good idea then why not
:)

  1. Hannah, probably Grace as well. Not sure about Nick, Stan, Craig or Charlie, though. Off the top of my head, I'm not sure how many videos they've been in, but if anyone has a decent guess, they can be considered. For the TFIOS cast, I'm not sure anyone's there yet, but I get the feeling (especially as the release nears) that the actors of Hazel/Gus/Isaac will make more appearances. So I'd say not yet, but keep an eye out on them.
  2. It'd be nice to have shorter names, but I'm not sure how many categories we could/should do that for. There are a lot of "Hank and Katherine play x" which is kind of repetitive titling, but I think the whenever there's a different person involved or the series is otherwise unique ("John and Hank play x" for example), it's useful to see immediately who's going to be in it. Maybe if we just abbreviated whenever it's Hank and Katherine (e.g. "H&K & Michael play x")?
  3. That's an interesting idea. There's a "project4awesome" channel that we could add, and then split all the p4a vids off vlogbrothers and onto that one. That could be better for organization. I don't want to do anything quite yet, but it's something worth considering. Anyone else that wants to jump in on this would be good.
  4. I'd prioritize John and Hank videos, followed by anybody else that we currently Credit. Beyond that, I'd say we wouldn't add any others unless we split off the p4a vids onto their own channel.
Also, I added How to Adult. I've been wondering for a while if I should also add elmify's main channel, and now it seems even more relevant, but I'm still not sure if it's relevant enough. Input on that would be good as well.
kitchensink108 on 2014 Feb 24 01:10
Another idea for hankgames categories, we could do the thing where we move the repetitive pieces to the end of the name (like what happens often with "the"). That is, rename "Hank and Katherine play Super Mario Bros. Wii" to "Super Mario Bros. Wii, Hank and Katherine play."

This would be easy enough to add as a separate name that appears only in lists. So the category page would still say "Hank and Katherine..." but on the channel page it would be "Super Mario Bros. Wii..."

Not sure which convention we'd use for the category chooser on video pages.

Site Updates 2014/2/22

I made a lot of style changes today. No new features or bug fixes, just trying to make the site look better. So far that's meant a lot of "make things white and add a shadow," but hopefully it makes things look a little cleaner.

Also, three of the dropdown menus (main nav->wiki, main nav->channel, video->languages) have been changed so there's a slight delay before they open up. You'll have to hover over it for like four tenths of a second before it opens. I was getting annoyed at how you could be, say, trying to get to the languages menu, but you mouse over the channel dropdown on the way and need to wait for that to close because it blocked the lang dropdown. So hopefully now there are fewer unintended boxes appearing all over the screen.

Site Updates 2014/2/16
  • If you revert the transcript editor to the basic editor, you can now switch back without reloading the page.
  • Fixed an issue on the language page where the list of category videos not yet translated wouldn't list anything.
  • When you click on a category on the Translated or Untranslated pages of a language, it'll now keep that category's channel expanded in the list.
  • Rounded the corners at the top of the page and on the language page because Zoidberg, why not.
  • Fixed an issue on the admin page where video links were broken.
  • Fixed an issue where deleting posts on a language board would redirect you to the main discussion page instead of back to that language.
  • Fixed an issue where the recent changes list for a language would incorrectly refer to English in all cases.
  • Modified the recent videos list on the homepage to indicate whether the video has been transcribed yet.
non sequitur on 2014 Feb 16 05:43
If usernames are mentioned in videos and (after trying to find them) I can't find the correct spelling, should I flag them or just leave them?
kitchensink108 on 2014 Feb 17 03:19
I'd say flag them, but don't let that stop you from marking the transcript as complete if that's the only thing missing.
non sequitur on 2014 Feb 16 07:29
Collection of Tiny Problems:
  • The list of all untranslated videos on languages pages doesn't actually show all untranslated transcripts, it cuts off after a certain number. I don't know if this is deliberate or not.
  • When searching for videos, capitalisation doesn't show up in the transcript preview on the search page.
  • It is awkward to seperate a transcript into collapsible sections as "=" now adds a timestamp. I think making "=" a timestamp shortcut is really helpful, so thank you very much for adding that, but perhaps it would be better to change the collapsible sections shortcut to five "-"s or another symbol, so that you don't have to turn shortcuts on and off again every time.
  • On the translation page, when clicking on any of the subcategories on the left hand side of the page (such as the subcategory of SciShow Biology videos, not the main category of SciShow videos) even if they say that some videos have not been translated, it only comes up with a "All videos have been translated" message
non sequitur on 2014 Feb 16 10:31
Also, would it be a good idea to make the links open in a new tab? I'm not sure.
kitchensink108 on 2014 Feb 17 03:18
  1. There's a cap on the number of videos that'll display there. If there are more than 100 or 1000 (or whatever the limit is) videos not yet transcribed, having a list isn't particularly useful, so I'm capping it.
  2. This is somewhat on purpose. Making everything lowercase made generating the preview (and especially highlighting the query in the preview) a lot easier. It'd be nice to preserve capitalization, but I don't think it's worth the effort it would take.
  3. Eek, yeah, I'd forgotten that section headers require the equals sign. I'll probably change that shortcut to something else (the ` key maybe?), since converting all the section headers doesn't sound like a fun task.
  4. Fixed.
  5. I don't think much about what should open in a new tab, since I middle click anything that I want to do that. This would be a good discussion question for others to jump in on: should external links open in a new tab?

Site Updates 2014/2/12

Only a few small things to mention today.
  • Hopefully finally blocked search engines from the beta site.
  • Fixed an issue with the video schedule allowing creation of schedules for locked categories.
  • Fixed an issue where videos that had a category, and then had all their categories removed, would not display on a channel's uncategorized page.
  • Changed how the messages link is displayed at the top of the page.
