Site Updates 2013/12/24
  • Channel URLs now support channel names
  • Nav menu changed to use channel names instead of IDs
  • Changed the Recent Videos strip to use bolder arrows
  • Added ability for administrators to clear a schedule (keeps the schedule, removes all users from it)
  • Revamped the admin page
  • Added Emily Graslie's vlog channel to the site

New feature: When a user is viewing their own user page, the user will be given the option of "claiming" any edits done from their current IP address that aren't already associated with an account.

This will...
  1. Allow users to claim some of their edits from before the site allowed accounts. This is limited, though, as it's been a while and probably not a lot of users still have the same IP address.
  2. Allow users to claim any edits they made while inadvertently not logged in.
There's always the chance that somebody can claim any person's edits, if the original editor wasn't logged in and the current user just so happens to have the same IP address. This is rather unlikely, though, and not a big deal if it does happen.

Added an indicator to the entries list to show whether the entry has children. This is a work-in-progress, but I think this was a big thing that was missing.

Site Updates 2013/12/21
(covering the past few days)
  • Hopefully finally fixed the video duration issue formatting issues.
  • Added the user management section to the admin page. Admins can make users admins, remove admin rights, and disable/enable accounts (effectively a ban).
  • Added the video management section to the category page. Currently admin-only, though I'm considering opening it up. Users can quickly remove videos from the given category, and can do an inline-search to quickly add new videos to the category.
  • Began disallowing underscores in usernames. This was causing an issue with user pages.
  • Fixed issues with automatically adding new videos.
  • Fixed silent error occuring on Random Video.
  • (Hopefully) fixed issue where video titles listed on a category page would be truncated really weirdly.
kitchensink108 on 2013 Dec 23 14:00
Two quick updates:
  • I combined "submit video" and "submit category" in order to save some space.
  • I started adding support for channel names in URLs (e.g. http://nerdfighteria.info/video/vlogbrothers/d4ow-EZkLjg). It should be mostly working with video URLs. It shouldn't be difficult to get it working with channel URLs. I probably won't be adding category names or video titles to the URLs at any point.
Bobidou23 on 2013 Dec 18 21:16
I've gotten the following error when trying to add videos:

Fatal error: Call to a member function getMessage() on a non-object in /hermes/waloraweb098/b2102/pow.kylebarr/htdocs/_nvw/pages/includes/video.php on line 251

But if I go back and do it again, it works.

kitchensink108 on 2013 Dec 19 02:07
I think I've fixed this error, but we'll see if that fixes video adding as a whole. I've been having issues with it the past couple days.

Either way, I just greatly improved error logging, so things should get easier to debug now.
kitchensink108 on 2013 Dec 19 15:50
I think there's still an issue with adding videos.

I have, however, fixed a couple other issues that the new error logging showed:
  • Clicking "Random Video" was generating a silent error. Users wouldn't notice any problems, but there was still an error.
  • Malformed URLs could (and in some cases, I'm sure, still do) cause issues. But now at least users (or realistically, bots) that attempt to access the site without a page identifier (video, channel, etc.) will be redirected to the homepage instead of seeing an error.
Bobidou23 on 2013 Dec 19 19:32
...if there's still an issue, I don't see it; the last few live videos were added fine. Thank you!
kitchensink108 on 2013 Dec 16 14:14
If anyone receives email notifications for SciShow, you may have gotten a notification every half hour for the last 12 hours for the same video... For some reason the newest SciShow video wouldn't get added to the wiki correctly, so it kept trying to add it over and over. Ended up adding the video manually to fix it, but I'm not sure if this is something that'll happen.
Bobidou23 on 2013 Dec 13 17:45
Is something up with the video uploading system? We're recent videos from a bunch of channels.
kitchensink108 on 2013 Dec 14 00:52
Yeah, looks like a change I made to the email notifications broke and took down automatic adder. The error "Using $this when not in object context" is my enemy.

Anyway, it's fixed now. Everything recent should now be on the wiki, and emails notications should now be correctly formatted.
kitchensink108 on 2013 Dec 02 19:58
Here's an interesting question. I could (theoretically) add subdomains to the site, so that if you go to nerdfightera.info you would get all the channels, but if you went to something like sexplanations.nerdfighteria.info you would only see videos from sexplanations. Does this sound like a useful thing to anyone, or more of a "cool but kind of pointless" thing?
stephenwade on 2013 Dec 02 21:36
Seems to me like more of the latter ("cool but kind of pointless"). It might be nice to see what channel you're on in the URL, but my feeling is that this would probably be better accomplished by changing the number in the URL (54 to vlogbrothers, 52 to crashcourse, etc.) rather than the subdomain.
Bobidou23 on 2013 Dec 07 05:03
Great to see you back! And I'm completely flattered I would be confused with kitchensink. Also, I agree that "nerdfighteria.info/channel/crashcourse" might be more useful than the subdomain.
216.x.x.146 on 2013 Dec 08 04:04
Indeed! It's good to be poking around here again. My semester break starts in about a week and a half, so I'll have to get back into transcribing stuff then. College has been more than enough to worry about for the past few months! :)
stephenwade on 2013 Dec 08 04:07
Oops… that was me. Forgot to sign in.

Oh, that's a good feature request too. The discussion page should remind users to log in if they're not already. (Perhaps restrict posting to logged-in users? What does everyone else think?)
kitchensink108 on 2013 Dec 08 05:08
I think posting while not logged in is an issue everyone here's experienced on the wiki. How about this? You should now see your username right above the textbox when making a post. If you're not logged in, 'anonymous' will be bright red to make it kind of obvious.

stephenwade on 2013 Dec 08 05:17
Had to log in again to make this reply, and I can say that definitely makes it obvious!
AyoDftba on 2013 Dec 13 15:17
We can be all like, "Ok, who forgot to login again? Don't lie to us."
AyoDftba on 2013 Dec 03 15:03
Can we have more of those questions not just for enabling editing but just for fun? I like those questions. Please?
non sequitur on 2013 Nov 29 05:50
Hi, sorry if this question has a really obvious answer, but I'm kind of new-ish on this site and I can't figure out how to fix my problem.
I've started trying to transcribe "THE PROJECT FOR AWESOME LIVESTREAM ROLLS ON," which is four hours long.
The person who transcribed the first 5 minutes or so began splitting it up into minute long intervals, with collapsible sections of 10 minutes each. This obviously makes it a lot easier for readers to find where in the video the transcription is up to, so I don't want to scrap the system.
However, I have encountered a problem wherein I don't seem to be able to link to places in the video with double digits (i.e. anything over 9 minutes and 59 seconds). Instead, it just links to the second number (so if the place I want to link to is 16:00 it will just go to 6:00).
The first person managed to make the ten minutes in the collapsible section heading link to ten minutes in the video, and I was wondering if there was a way for me to do the same?
Thank you in advance!
AyoDftba on 2013 Nov 30 15:03
Try refreshing your page. I do it when ever the link I want to post on a word or whatever just makes a new paragraph or something. But I have never transcripted a video so I don't know if it'll work or not.
stephenwade on 2013 Dec 01 04:58
I'm not sure what's going on with that video. I've never had this problem with other >10min videos (like Crash Course), and I can't see anything different in that transcript than others I've worked on. My only guess is that it has something to do with the unusually long length of the video, although I just did a quick test on a 1hr video and transcript links seem to be working fine. I guess we have to wait for the site admin (Bobidou23) to get back and take a look at it.

On a (possibly?) related note, the video duration in the infobox below the player is formatted incorrectly if the video is less than ten minutes longer than an hour multiple. (In this case, the video duration is shown as 4:0:29.)
kitchensink108 on 2013 Dec 01 05:31
It seems to be an issue with double-digit timetamps that end in :00. I changed 11:00 to 11:01 and that fixed it. So you can either add one second to all your timestamps (11:01, 12:01, etc., which is kind of an ugly solution but it'll work immediately), or you can keep the clean timestamps (11:00, 12:00 and so on) and it'll start working once I manage to fix the code.

I'll add that and the infobox issue stephenwade pointed out to the list of things I need to fix when I get back to developing the site, which hopefully will be soon.
stephenwade on 2013 Dec 01 05:35
Did I confuse Bobidou with kitchensink? Oops, that's embarrassing…

Anyway, awesome! Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving, if you're in that part of the world :)

Thank you all so much for your help! If it would be possible for you (you being kitchensink108) to post something on here when you have found the time to fix the code that would be really great, in the meantime I'll probably just add a second on :)
kitchensink108 on 2013 Dec 02 17:15
Yeah, I'll make a post here when I get things fixed. I'm working on a list of things I want to get fixed soon, which so far contains...
  • Fix timestamp issue
  • Fix infobox duration issue
  • Make video notification emails more useful
  • Make discussion notification emails more useful
  • Fix issue with duplicate sending of video notification emails
stephenwade on 2013 Dec 01 06:14
Oh, another site improvement idea:

The link in the "Discussion update" email should link to the mentioned post—or, at least, the site discussion page—rather than the homepage.
AyoDftba on 2013 Nov 30 14:59
Anyone here think we should like, make entries for John's book characters Miles, Alaska, Colin etc?
kitchensink108 on 2013 Dec 01 05:33
I don't think there's quite enough content for that. Like, I'm not sure you can write enough about Miles that he should have his own separate article.

But, if you think there's enough to write about, go ahead and do it.
