I'm really sorry to keep bugging you, it's just I noticed that the drop-down menu under incomplete transcripts on the homepage isn't working, it's just coming up with empty brackets that link to an empty channel. I think Bobidou23 mentioned this at some point but I'm not sure. Sorry!
AyoDftba on 2014 Jan 06 00:21
Bug us all you want bro. There are always people here to help you out.
kitchensink108 on 2014 Jan 06 00:57
Looks like that broke when I added invisible channels. Quick fix, though. Thanks for pointing it out.

I was just thinking that it might be useful to have a link to all untranscribed videos (regardless of what channel they're on) somewhere?
This could also be useful for all videos transcribed into italian/french/etc.
Just a thought.

kitchensink108 on 2014 Jan 03 15:17
I could add something like a "langauge page" that would show all videos translated into a particular language. I'd like to put more thought into how it deals with untranscribed videos, though. Since most languages have (at most) a few videos translated, the untranslated video list across all channels would be in the thousands.
Bobidou23 on 2014 Jan 03 05:07
I'm wondering what happened to "Flags", and I've also forgotten what happened to "Notes". There was one video I transcribed where I couldn't figure out whose voice was behind the camera, and thought I would jot that down somewhere...
Also, the drop-down menu at the front page seems to just be showing a blank... but the "invisible" features is working otherwise... should LBD be invisible (being no longer updated, and entirely transcribed), or is the feature intended more for smaller channels?

What did happen to "flags?" That's a good question. It seems as though the link got (accidentally) removed from the top of the page. I'll add that back, but the page itself is still up and running here.
"Notes" got removed a while back because no one was using it. I'm looking at the database table (which still exists) and, of the very few notes that were ever entered, like half of them were using it for what "Flags" does now (saying "I couldn't transcribe the word at x:xx). Here's a dump of all the video notes and their corresponding video IDs.
I think invisible should only be used for small channels. My thinking is, if a user comes to this site, is there any chance this user is here because of this channel? There's a high chance that users would be here for LBD, there's a much much lower chance that someone's arrived at the wiki looking for information about elfkwest.

I added a visible indicator to channels, which will hopefully allow us to add a lot of smaller/dead channels to the wiki. Invisible channels won't show up in places like the channels dropdown or the untranscribed list on the homepage. I'll make a page at some point that lists all the channels on the site, including invisible ones, but the only other ways to access these channels will likely be through search or wiki entries.
Admin note: visibility can be toggled on the channel page.

Suggestions regarding URLS:
- Links from the channels menu use the channel name, but video and channel links elsewhere, including the carousel at the top of the home page, still use the channel ID. I think all links involving the channel ID should be switched to use the channel name if possible.
- Is it possible to make video links work without the channel name? I'm fine with it redirecting, but I'd like to be able to go straight from the YouTube page to the Nerdfighteria Wiki page without having to add the channel name to the URL (this would allow for something like a bookmarklet that could quickly jump to the wiki entry for a particular video).
- Nit: video links from the incomplete transcripts section of the home page have "/1" on the end.
- Nit: Emma Approved is the only channel URL that's not all lowercase.
kitchensink108 on 2014 Jan 02 14:11
- Yeah, we can do this. I think it'll be a slow migration, though. There are a lot of places where it's a quick change, but there are other places where I'll have to make another database call to do this, so it'll take some time to go through all the spots this'll affect.
- This should be working now.
- The channel id was there to differentiate whether you were viewing a channel or a category, so the next/previous nav knew which videos to get. It'll still work the same way now, but if you don't include a channel name/id, it'll find that for you and redirect you to that URL.
- This is actually intentional. The /1 is the English-language transcript, and the incomplete transcripts section is based on which videos are missing English-language transcripts.
- Fixed.

Site Updates 2014/1/1
- Removed the message "there are not categories for this video yet" when a video did not have categories assigned.
- Removed the double border when no video credits had been added to a video yet.
- Changed the full-size image viewer on wiki entries to be the size of the image, instead of having a bunch of extra space.
- Added some styling to the images section of the wiki entry page.
- Added video duration to the video statistics page.
- Added ability to show/hide the right column on the video statistics page.
- Added thousands-separators to the like and dislike counts on the video statistics page.
- Miscellaneous style changes to the All Videos page on wiki entries.
- I think a lot of external links (maybe on spam sites) were using malformed URLs (e.g. going to a video page without giving a video id). The site will now attempt to fix malformed URLs as best as it can, and will fail more gracefully if it can't.

And when use the search function to bulk-add, each entry is doubled. I don't think this is actually a problem.
Search result doubling, searching on enter key, and navigating category videos should all be fixed now. Also found another issue along the way, where the prev/next video could be one that's no longer in the selected category.

Also, the X's next to the categories aren't aligned with the category names.
To go to a more discussion-oriented topic - SciShow categories. They are certainly going to be arbitrary and overlapping; I'm wondering whether we should have more speciic categories with fewer videos each, or fewer, larger categories.

Sorry for the multiple back-to-back posts.
For Breaking News and Talk Show videos that encompass multiple separate categories, should we put all the categories (even though they only apply to part of the video), or none? So far, I've put none.

Site Updates 2013/12/27
Or 12/28. Apparently it's midnight.
Well, the wiki section now supports images. You can add as many images (currently jpg-only) to a wiki entry as you'd like. You can also add a caption. The editor will let you edit the caption or remove the image.
If an entry has a single image, it'll display floated to the left (like a profile picture). Multiple images will display in a grid at the top of the entry. All images are resized to 800x600 or 640x480 or something (ratio preserved) when uploading.
It's kind of a scary feature to add, so we'll have to see how this goes. I'm expecting weird errors.

I've been adding book covers and a few John images, and all seems to be going smoothly!
About the "Recent Changes" tab... adding images and credits don't show up there; is this intentional?

I don't know if this would be ridiculously hard to program but I was thinking that if there was some form of spell-check enabled for editing video transcripts then it would probably make editing them a lot easier and more professional-looking??
But I have no idea how one would go about doing that or how difficult it might be so yeah it's just an idea.

Alex Durso on 2013 Dec 29 17:28
That's called Chrome. Or C&P into a word processor.
kitchensink108 on 2013 Dec 29 17:36
Unfortunately Chrome's spellcheck doesn't work with the textarea the site uses for discussions/transcripts/entries. I looked into another solution a while back but didn't find an obvious workaround. I'll look at it again sometime to see if there's something I can implement in CKEditor, or if I should move away from CKEditor.

Apparently, she still does stuff on that channel.

Since we're adding more side-channels, I feel like this should be added, even though she hasn't updated in 2 years.
Which brings up a few points:
Which brings up a few points:
- The channels bar should probably be reorganized.
- Michael Aranda's channel seems to have only the last 500 of his 800+ videos, and
- He also has two other personal channels: http://www.youtube.com/user/michaelaranda and http://www.youtube.com/user/WhatImPwningRightNow
- Perhaps there should be a way to designate channels that are "dead" - lbd, sanditon, truthorfail, then maybe this.
- "All the Questions" is another channel; if dead channels are okay, then should that be added as well, or, since there are only 8 videos, should the videos be added individually into "miscellaneous"?
kitchensink108 on 2013 Dec 28 04:54
Yeah, I'd like to find some way to add more small channels to the wiki. Even with the (relatively) newly designed nav menu, it's not going to support this many channels. Elfkwest is a channel I've been meaning to add but keep forgetting.
I added Michael Aranda's side channel in preparation for a future feature (the "credits" idea you mentioned earlier). I don't know why the automator died at 500 videos, but that complicates matters. Either way, I've disabled the channel for now, while we figure out how to deal with all thi, and until the new feature is actually developed.
