Should there be a Expand all/Collapse all button for the wiki so you could like expand all of the wiki?
AyoDftba on 2013 Aug 22 17:28
It's nice to have more nerdfighters helping us with this wiki now. Before this it was just me, kitchensink108, Bobidou23 and stephenwade. Just four of us editing this wiki and now there are like 24 editors of the wiki. So i'd like to say to the new people: Hi! How's it goin?

I added the Swindon Town Swoodilypoopers Fan Community to the "Communities" category btw.

Not good!

The transcription I did for Redox Reactions is my very first one, so I'd like to mark everything as "of questionable quality". If you don't mind, please see if it meets the level of quality needed in this website?
AyoDftba on 2013 Aug 24 06:23
Seems ok.

Hey all!

I'm headed off to my first year of college this weekend, so sorry for my recent and upcoming absence from the site. I'll continue to do what I can after I get settled, but I probably won't be doing quite as many transcriptions and such.

Oh boy.
kitchensink108 on 2013 Aug 21 14:16
Haha, have fun! It'll probably be crazy and hectic for a while, so good luck with that.
AyoDftba on 2013 Aug 18 10:19
Hey Guys,
Question: Should Nerdcrafteria be a community as well as a project?
Tell me what you guys think down below.

I'm thinking just a community. I don't have a good explanation for why I think that, but that feels right to me.

Site updates, 2013/8/17

(updates made so far this weekend)
  • Alerting user when leaving discussion page without saving a post
  • Alerting user when leaving a video page without saving changes to a transcript
  • ...Fixing bugs with both of those, see stephenwade's post #263
  • Alerting admins before archiving a post
  • Also fixed the expand/collapse issue in #263. Had to throw in an extra line break, but oh well.
  • Re-styled the nav menu to better handle new channels. Still working on it, but I'm not thinking any major changes are needed
  • Added Sanditon. Pulled all the videos from the "Welcome to Sanditon" category over to it. Other Pemberley Digital videos should be unaffected.
  • Technically I added Emma Approved, but it's not enabled yet.
  • Accidentally overwrote some CSS I'd done (especially on the getting-started guide) because I'm not using any version control for my code right now.
  • Fixed the styles (that I could easily identify) that got lost because of that. Though I wouldn't be surprised if there are other styles that got lost.
There will probably be more updates tomorrow, though I haven't decided what yet.

A few things to work on may have gotten lost in the flood of threads. Here they are again (with the # of the original comment), with a few new thoughts mixed in.
  1. Truthorfailnosub. I think we've established that the chain of questions and answers should be done by hyperlink in the video transcripts, but creating the hyperlinks and the videos to which they should lead is going to be a ridiculously time-consuming process - the answer videos don't give any indication which # question they are for, and some are unlisted. The solution seems to be to go through every single ToF video, go through the answers, see if the answer videos are on the wiki - if so, link them; if not, add and then link. A way to organize/coordinate this? (146)
  2. On a relevant note, giving Admins an option to make videos searchable but not on the channel page, so that said unlisted answer videos can be added? (207)
  3. Prompting before threads are archived? Or putting archived threads in the "Admin" tab to be reactivated. (195)
  4. Showing the just first several lines for massive posts like this one, with a "Show all" button?
  5. "Expand all"/"Collapse all" button for CC transcripts? (181)
  6. On scishow videos, I'd like the list of categories to be reoedered/reformatted when clicking "Add category..." according to the order already established on the channel page. (194)
  7. Add a tab on channel pages for only partially transcribed videos?
  8. Add more specific points on formatting in the "Getting Started" guide? Perhaps that could have its own tab.
  9. The schedule page. I think not everyone should be able to create a schedule, as the weekly schedule only changes so often, and doubling often happens. (234)
  10. Assigning past videos should be in a separate section (just to keep it clear)? Each category for each channel should have a sign-up row (allowing multiple signups, of course), perhaps including how many videos from this category remain untranscribed - like "Miracle of Swindon Town (213) | Add Yourself", so that volunteers know how much work each category needs. (234)
  11. I feel like the Admin tab is only showing the 25 most recent submitted videos. Is this intentional?
  12. The entries in the "History" tabs for videos don't link to the contributing users' pages.
  13. If there is text in the edit box, I feel the discussion page should prompt you before allowing you to close or leave accidentally. (181)
  14. Adding a column in "Video statistics" pages for the length of the video?
Please just reference the number when affirming/disagreeing/etc. Thanks!
stephenwade on 2013 Aug 15 03:37
1: One useful thing would be a backend ability to link multiple videos to a "parent": in the Truth or Fail case, the children don't need their own place on the main video page (other than the transcript links), but they should show up in the "needs transcription" section, and if you are on one of the "nosub" videos there could be a link that says "You came here from [Truth or Fail: Mustaches]. Click here to go back to that video" or similar.

8: I agree, formatting should have its own tab, especially for things like Crash Course or SciShow. The formatting guidelines should be somewhere other than the "Cleaning up transcripts" tab because people apparently don't notice that tab—I've seen people do things like put the headings in all caps, for instance. We need a central place to say things like "the intro sequence should be written as [intro music]" and "don't sign your name after a transcript or translation". (Maybe it would be useful to copy some of the model Crash Course video from the "Cleaning up" tab [link] into that page as an example of some of the guidelines with annotations that explain some of our guidelines.)

Related to 8, a formatting question: what should we use to set apart actions and notes that aren't spoken (like important actions [link] or items on screen [link])? I prefer square brackets over parentheses, but those using the website's transcription shortcuts can't do that easily because they are used to skip around in the video.
kitchensink108 on 2013 Aug 15 15:30
Some fixes this morning...
  • #5, there should now be buttons displaying if the transcript has sections
  • #6, categories are now ordered and colored by group
  • #9, creating and deactivating schedules should now be admin-only. Also, schedules are color-coded by whether they have assigned users.
  • #10, this isn't necessarily fixed, but I added a note that the schedule only applies to new videos.
  • #11, it's intentional. It's ordered by add date, and I wasn't thinking it would be useful to have a giant list of old videos.
  • #12, fixed, along with fixing the date format so the hour has a leading zero.
I think somewhere along the way search previews broke. It's no longer showing a highlighted snippet of the transcript. Not sure how that happened.
Bobidou23 on 2013 Aug 18 03:10
Thank you! What should I do now regarding the doubled schedules? There are lot of redundant ones, but a lot of users have signed up for them...
stephenwade on 2013 Aug 18 02:45
Bug reports:
  • The Expand all/Collapse all links break if the first part of the video is in a section. [example]
  • The "Are you sure you want to leave this page?" box appears when clicking the "Post message" button.

Continuing the resurrection thread, but with topics for discussion. Again, please reference the bullet number when responding.
  1. Must John or Hank himself be involved in a video from another channel for it to be added to "miscellaneous"? How about their family, and how about Dr. Doe or Emily? (113)
  2. And what is the "threshold" of relevance to be added - how much of the video should he/she/they be in? (110)
  3. By the way, should clips from various VidCons featuring John and Hank be on the wiki? If so, under miscellaneous or their own categories? (235)
  4. How about prominent nerdfighters? Videos involving Jennifer Pinches, the Olympian (128), or books by Kimya Dawson (129) or Maureen Johnson (109)?
  5. How about books by non-nerdfighters that John/Hank have mentioned a few times (or even just once!), in a video/on social media? (172)
  6. If content by non-Green creators are added, how should they be organized? (Especially pertaining to the "books" category - should each author have a sub-page?) (109)
  7. The recently added "Projects" category - is Nerdcrafteria a Hank-initiated thing, or a community thing? Does it even matter? How about projects that were referenced by John/Hank but begun by non-Nerdfighters - I recall "Beckoning of Lovely". (180)
  8. What is the distinction between a "Project" and an "Event"? VidCon and P4A are projects, that take the form of events. I've put them under both categories, I think, for now. (179)
  9. Should visual actions be denoted in the transcripts? Say, #21 here. I'd say sometimes, but where is the line? (181)
ellianderjoy on 2013 Aug 13 07:04
I have done a lot of transcribing and editing LBD videos, and as of today, all of the original LBD vidoes including Lydia's videos and the Domino Beta test videos have been transcribed.

My question is, there are a lot of Sanditon videos that are untranscribed. Is there a reason for this, or is it just because they are newer videos? Also, why are they included in the LBD channel? Surely it would make more sense for there to be a seperate channel?
kitchensink108 on 2013 Aug 13 12:34
I'm not sure exactly why Sanditon doesn't have many transcripts. My guess it that 1) it got added to the wiki later, so people here have had less time to transcribe it, 2) it's a newer channel in general, so there aren't as many transcripts on other sites that people could use.

Sanditon right now is, on the wiki, a subchannel of LBD. I combined the two since Sanditon was a smaller project and I didn't want the channels dropdown to get cluttered. Once I redesign the menu, though, it can be become an independent channel.
ellianderjoy on 2013 Aug 13 13:57
Okay, thanks. I just wasn't sure if I should go ahead and transribe them or not :)
216.x.x.146 on 2013 Aug 11 22:47
I have been transcribing a lot of videos lately, but I also see a lot of videos that seem to have complete transcriptions, with a few errors here and there sometimes, that are not marked as complete. Why is this? Should they be marking their videos as complete, or should I be waiting for others to review and edit my transcriptions before marking it as complete? Is there some sort of criteria for completeness beyond what I might expect?

Thanks!
Bobidou23 on 2013 Aug 13 04:11
No, I don't think videos need review before being marked as complete - can you point out a few videos that aren't marked as complete but should be? I don't recall seeing any.
kitchensink108 on 2013 Aug 13 12:30
Agreed, if you feel you're done with the transcript, go ahead and mark it as complete. Even if you couldn't transcribe a few words here and there, but you've transcribed the rest of the video, mark it as complete.

There are probably some complete or nearly-complete transcripts that aren't marked so, but that's probably a recent thing (new users not knowing that they should mark it complete themselves).
