There's an issue where the actual transcript text around the two-minute section headers become incorporated into the header itself? For example, you can see it in DH&J ep. 276: https://nerdfighteria.info/v/975476761/ and DH&J ep. 277: https://nerdfighteria.info/v/981206830/ or really any of the newer transcribed DH&J episodes.

I think it could be easily fixed if a line break "<br>" was automatically added before and after each section header? So then the text is separated from the headers.

A more detailed explanation:

The transcript should look like:

(0:00) to (2:00)
[transcript text]

(2:00) to (4:00)
[transcript text]

The section headers ("===== (x:xx) to (x:xx) ====") are inside the paragraphs so some of the transcript ends up becoming part of the header.

The editor then looks like this:

[transcript text]

[transcript text] ===== (2:00) to (4:00) ===== [transcript text]

[transcript text]

And the displayed transcript then looks like this:

[transcript text]

[large transcript text] (2:00) to (4:00) [large transcript text]

[transcript text]

The large transcript text ends up being really hard to read and it's hard to figure out what section you're in, so preventing this can really help with readability etc.

This should be mostly fixed now.

There's some kind of glitch somewhere that makes the headers appear on the same line as the next paragraph, when it expects headers to be on their own line. I haven't fixed the glitch that makes this happen, or fixed the transcripts that this has happened to, but I did make the wiki care less about it. So it should be displaying properly now.

Hey I just noticed that the last 14 ish dear hank and john episodes are not on the wiki. The last one on here is 306:Lemon People Bucket Problem and was published in october. The most recent episode is 320. What happened with them being added to the wiki?
ffbx00 on 2022 Mar 11 19:43
(Oh and also I checked soundcloud and all the most recent episodes are on there so the issue seems to be somewhere with the importing to here)

AAH... accidentally added random content warning to the newest VlogBrothers video... don't know how to make it go away, help?
kitchensink108 on 2021 Dec 10 23:38
No worries, I got rid of it.

That does bring up a good question though. I have a feeling that removing content warnings might be broken.

The 'Monopoly and Academic Decathalon' episode appears to be missing?
kitchensink108 on 2021 Aug 12 22:48
Yep, looks like that episode never got uploaded to SoundCloud. I'll see if I can find somebody who can fix that.

Hi,
I'm sort of new to transciribing videos how does it work? I wrote a transcript for one of Hank's videos for Vlogbrothers what happens now? Do other people check it and then it gets uploaded?
kitchensink108 on 2021 Aug 04 23:52
If you transcribe a video on the wiki, make sure to save it and then hit Complete to mark the transcript as complete. At that point, you're done and can move to another video.

The transcript you saved will automatically get spellchecked, and users will be able to correct any possible misspellings it found. Someone at Complexly might add the transcript as a subtitle file on Youtube, but I'm not sure if that's a thing their doing much at the moment.

I'm having issues getting the "Grab from YouTube" button to work. When I look in the devloper tools it looks like I'm getting an "Uncaught No EN transcript returned." error. Any ideas why this might be happening, or what I can do to fix it?

A few minor updates, 2020/06/01.
  • There's a new feature where categories will be automatically added to certain videos. Admins can set keywords on the category's page. If a video gets uploaded that matches those keywords, it'll get that category as well. Currently this is only happening for Crash Course.
  • I had a tab on the Transcribe page called Video Schedule. All it said was "coming soon" and I really don't know what I was planning to put there, so it's gone now.
  • If you look at the "nearly complete channels" on the homepage, you can hover over a channel's name and it'll show an estimate of how much time it would take to finish transcribing that channel.
  • The Top Transcribers section on the homepage has a feature that lets you choose the timeframe you're looking at. It already had a "1 year" timeframe, but I've added a "This Year" timeframe that counts from Jan 1 to today's date. This was more of a curiosity and not actually that useful.

A few site updates (2020/5/14).
  • Fixed an issue reported by ImperialSushi where the video counts on the Categories tab of the Channel pages were wrong.
  • I made some security/privacy changes a few weeks ago that could potentially cause issues with older browsers or computers. I think I made a mistake at the time and the change caused problems with more browsers than intended. That should be fixed now.
  • You can now download fancy PDF exports of certain transcripts. If you go to any Crash Course category page (e.g. Crash Course World History), you should see a "Download transcripts" link, that should download a zip of all the transcripts.
  • The exports are only enabled for Crash Course's categories right now, but if anyone thinks other channels should get this feature, feel free to suggest. The PDFs and Zips are updated each night. I'm still working on making the PDFs look a little nicer, but it's pretty usable right now.

Is there a way for the videos to be added into playlists by year they were uploaded in the same way, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011,  2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 were? I would like this to be done for 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. Has anyone already done that on their own YouTube channel?
ImperialSushi on 2020 May 13 14:44
Not that I know of.

If anyone's interested, here are some site updates from the past week or so.
  • The site now automatically copies transcripts that were transcribed on Youtube. It might take a few days for a specific transcript to get copied, but it'll get it eventually. It's loaded about 700 transcripts over the past few days as it tries to catch up on all the transcripts it was missing.
  • You can force it to copy the transcript for a specific video if you want. There's now a "YT" button in the editor. When you click it, it'll check Youtube for a transcript, and if it finds one, will copy it into the editor box. You can then save/complete the transcript.
  • I've decreased how often videos are updated. Previously, every video would get updated once a week (title, description, statistics, etc). It'll now be something lilke once a month. The wiki is constantly running into the limit of Youtube API calls, so this should alleviate things.
  • I'm working on cleaning up the channels. There are a lot of channels on the wiki, and too many of them are tiny, dead, or otherwise not being useful.
