Hey look, a little bit of debris.
Hello and welcome to Games With Hank. I am Hank, and this is games with me. And the game today is gonna be Kerbal Space Program.
Last time we blasted off into space and then I messed up and probably left an astronaut stranded for his entire life. They seem to live forever so that's good.
Then I blasted off into space again, got my Mun encounter, but have not yet gotten into orbit around the Mun which is my goal today. We'll see how it goes.
Alright, let's get loaded up.
Alright, here we are. This is where we're at now, and this is... where we're going to do our orbital maneuver to try and get in orbit around the Mun, which is currently right there.
Not sure what that is... I'm confused. I'm not entirely sure if I'm doing this correctly, you guys. But seems like we are, seems like I am. But you know, I don't know. So let's just do it and see how it goes.
So if I do this, you are moving, right? Yes, you are moving, okay good. And then we're just moving, and the Mun is moving as well. The Mun will come along, and it will grab me in its gravity well, and then I will need to perform a maneuver. Mun, me, things are happening. Gonna speed up a little bit and then slow way down, because that happened, that was fast. And then we're going to slow down some more.
This is... there's a lot of waiting in this game. But its important. I really don't know. Okay, so now that we're... oooh, okay. Alright. So now that we're-- OH okay, so let's just... Okay, so we've got, alright.
So everything changes once you actually get-- oooh look at that, so, I've-- alright. So this is actually much much simpler now. I think that we just add a maneuver at our periapsis here and slow ourselves down.
And then until... oh look at that, voila(?). Okay, so that, all that time yesterday, trying to figure out how to do this, and that's all I needed to do is let it do it on its own.
So where is this? It's at 100,000 meters, that's roughly exactly where I wanted to be.
I am now in the sphere of the Mun's influence. I say "Mun" or "moon" interchangeably, it's played "M-u-n" in this game, but obviously it is the surrogate for the Moon in our solar system.
Alright. Here it comes. (nervous sounds) Alright. Oh god. I want to like not spend forever waiting for this to happen, but I also don't want to overshoot the Mun.
Alright, let's just go to there, and then we'll go to our staging here. So here's the Mun, and we're gonna, apparently basically just shoot ourselves directly away from it, and that's gonna slow us down. So the Mun is now much bigger than Kerbin in my sphere of the world, which is exciting and neat.
If only I had just a little bit more fuel I could do more interesting things, but you know, it is what it is. We are seventeen minutes away from the time where we need to do our burn, so let's speed time up a little bit so that it's not that far away. 14, 13, 12, 11 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, okay let's slow down. 5, 4, oh I see. So I wasn't actually pointed directly away from the Mun, I'm actually going to slide behind it and I'm going to basically thrust in the exact opposite direction as I'm going.
I've gotten myself quite close to the Mun here, and then I'm going to slow myself down. My orbit is 600, like 700 meters per second. I need to slow that orbit down so that I will get into an orbit around the Mun. 3 minutes... 2 minutes... Let's start to throttle up here and see...
I'm confused. I'm confused. Oh, I can't throttle 'cause...
I don't know if this is too early. It's probably too early. Probably too early, let's let the time... let's let a little more time pass. We're basically just I think, that's good. Now let's do it. 48 seconds. And then we're gonna throttle all the way up. And we're actually going to let a little bit more time pass because the burn is only...
Alright, alright, here we go, gettin' ourselves into a nice Munar orbit. Hngghh, ungggh, aggghhhhhhh I think we're gonna do it without any problems... and then turn it off... Okay.
If we go to the orbit map and... YAAAAY WE'RE IN ORBIT AROUND THE MUN. This is exciting. We're in a perpetual orbit around the Mun. We can stay in orbit around the Mun forever but that sounds boring. Should we add a maneuver to land on the Mun?
So I probably just drag this over here to where we are actually-- well no, it seems to be more efficient to do it there. It's more efficient to do it at your apoapsis. Guh, this is terrifying, but basically we just fire our rockets in the opposite direction of the Mun as much as we can, and then slow down to the point where we're not...
I mean I guess I could just do that now, I could just... I don't need to, I don't need the orbital, I don't need this. I can just point myself in the opposite direction I'm traveling, where is-- there it is, ooh pretty. Let's just speed this up so we can sort of watch, watch our craft orbit.
Yeah that's pretty. Orbiting the Mun. There's a big sea there, there's lots of pockmarks and other and another sea over here. I want to land on the lighted side of the Mun, the dark side of the Mun's a little dark for me. Or orbit is currently 471 meters per second. That's stable. And then if we shoot in this direction, our orbit will slow down. And we will slow down. Everything will slow down. Until we're just falling into the planet.
(cut)
Oh no, my face cam turned off. I don't know why my face cam turned off but it did. Okay, so let's resume.
(cut)
My face cam is off again.
(cut)
No idea what's going on with this, but you know, just try... stay! Don't turn off! And yeah...
(cut)
It turned off. Oh well. Well my face cam isn't working and I don't know what's wrong with my camera, so that's terrifying because I need that for my job, but whatever. Here we go.
Move toward the light side of the Mun. Then I'm gonna want to point myself sort of away. Apparently you can't do that while... There we go. Yeah basically-- no wait, that's toward, I don't want to put right straight toward the planet. That would be, that would probably be a really good to die.
I really have no idea how this is going to work. We're droppin' real fast. And figuring out how to not drop real fast is going to be the primary problem to solve here.
We've obviously got a lot of... we're moving so fast. Well, this is pretty, but I don't want to hit the Mun going too fast, and we are going what I would call too fast right now.
Alright, that's way too fast you guys. Alright. Let's point ourselves away from-- toward-- away, away from the planet, so we can slow our descent a little bit.
I have no idea if I have anywhere near enough fuel to manage this. But there we are, that's where we're gonna land. I mean, theoretically, there's just a lot of speed headed into this.
Trying to slow down my orbit, trying to slow down my descent, trying to slow down a lot of things all at once here. The important thing is that we land this rocket, and that it doesn't come back, because if we have lots of fuel and we can come back home, then I'm just gonna feel really weird for not killing Bartvis. It will feel just exceptionally different from all of my other experiences in Kerbal Space Program.
Just trying to retrograde a little bit here, slowing down my orbit, my orbital speed. Slowing down both the sideways and the up-and-down at the same time, that's my goal.
Oh yeah, that looks awesome. Look at that.
I have no idea how this is going to go, you guys. But I'm going to land right in that crater. That's the goal. Pretty close to the surface of the Mun here. (nervous laughter) You should've seen my face just now.
What's this thing? Oh it's just my ball. Okay. What is happening? basically going straight down. Nope, not that, this way.
Oh man, if only I had put lander legs on this thing, that would've been a smart move.
Scott Manley right now is just shocked at my inability, my lack of skill and my complete uselessness as a Kerbal Space Astronaut.
I'm sorry. I'm sorry Scott Manley for being terrible.
Oh my gosh -- oh man, I'm going away from the planet. That's not what I wanted. That was too much you guys, okay. Be a little more at peace, Hank, don't freak out so hard.
Okay, you're still very close to the surface here. I cannot zoom in any close.
So I'm, what, 4000 meters off the surface? And still climbing, apparently. I'm just gonna have to the gravity take-- I mean, I could... I'm not going to waste any fuel turning around. Lettin' the gravity take over.
Alright, here we go again. We're dropping. Dropping. Aren't we? Yes, we're dropping. We're going to land in this crater. That would be cool. I'm totally in favor of that.
Fifty meters per second. 55, 54. 35... 3500 meters. 3500 meters is a lot. Actually I don't know if like, uh, everywhere on this planet is, like, sea level. I assume not. So like, are we looking at sea level right now?
We are now inside this crater. We are just going to lay this puppy down-- whoaaa nope nope I freaked out. I didn't see my shadow. Oh gosh, did I-- wow, okay, let's uh...
Okay. Alright, I'm terrible at this, this is super boring, I apologize.
Oh my god this is so hard. How do you do this? Nope, nope, what am I doing? What are you doing? Why are you doing that? I'm so confused right now.
Oh there's my shadow.
Okay, so I was much farther from the ground than I thought. Why can I no longer control-- I can no longer control anything.
NOOOOOOOOOOOO.
For some reason I lost the ability-- I must have like used up all my batteries in the gyroscopes in the freakin' craft. Oh nooooo. Now I need to watch some Scott Manley. Watch some Scott Manley, refine my landing techniques, on Kerbin preferably so I don't have to fly all the way to the Mun before learning how badly I suck.
Well, Bartvis Kerman was killed. It's a very sad day for us here on Kerbal Space Program, on Games With Hank. Thank you for watching. This has been Games With Hank, I have been Hank, and the game has been Kerbal Space Program. Thank you for watching and DFTBA.
