Savannah: Drones could help save humanity from malaria. Because the disease is often spread by mosquitos, researchers have been working to put an end to it by breeding sterile mosquitoes in the lab. The idea is that they'd release the modified insects, which will mate with wild females, but won't be able to produce viable offspring. And this works.
But releasing enough mosquitoes in enough places to make a difference has been a challenge. That's where we might have found the coolest use for drones ever. Researchers are giving these modified mosquitoes the ride of their lives to better disperse them. Drones spread the sterile mosquitoes faster and more evenly than we could by hand ultimately making more than 50% of the mosquito babies in an area nonviable.
So, drones aren't just for sick videography anymore.
