Hank Green talks the whirlwind of TFIOS from his perspective!

[musical intro]

Interviewer: So this has been a long time coming for you uh your the first person to read the book.

Hank: One of the first.

I: One of the first? So what is your favorite part about seeing this happen?

H: Um, I had no idea what this red carpet thing was gonna be like, it's bluer than I imagined. But other than, I mean, it's just... there's much -- so much excitement and so many people are connecting to it, and it's not that kind of movie that's supposed to get this kind of response. So that means a lot, I know, to John, and it means a lot to me, and it also means a lot to everybody who worked on the movie. So that's the best part, just seeing people love it.

I: (unintelligible)

H: Nah.

I: And what does The Fault In Our Stars mean to you, like what's that one thing you're like, "That's why it means so much to me" ?

H: I... when I first read it, I know I .... I put it down, and one, it's just hard to believe that my brother wrote it, because I know that guy, he's kind of a doof, and so it's seeing this thing come out of like... It's hard to put those two people together. Like, this guy wrote this book! And he's my brother! Cuz usually I read a book, and I immediately think what it means with this person. But then I'm like, I know John, he's John. Um, and uh, when I finished reading it, I just remember thinking, "This is going to be a really big deal for John, and it's gonna be a really big deal for Nerdfighteria." And from the moment I put it down, I didn't know that this was gonna happen, but I knew it was gonna be a big deal.

I: And, if you would... if you were gonna act in the movie, who would you want to play?

H: In this movie?

I: In this movie.

H: Some very small part. I am not good at acting.

(both laugh)

I: I would feel that way as well.

H: Yeah.

I: What is your favorite quote from the book? Favorite quote. Or what is your favorite quote overall, not just in the book.

H: Oh, I'm not gonna do that one.

I: No, that one's too hard? Too many quotes?

H: Yeah. "Don't forget to be awesome" is my favorite quote of all time. Let's just use that. Um, I don't know, the Craiglist ad for the swing set.

I: Oh yes.

H: I really like that. I like the funny moments, the parts where you get to be uh, you get to you know, it's... humanize the situation, and like, when I have, when I've dealt with tragedy in my life, the moments that I uh, that make me feel a little bit better about the situation, or when you can still admit that you're a human, admit that you can laugh about something.... Those parts are... I don't know, you know where it's like, the swing set, vaguely pedophilic swing set.

I: The old swing set of tears!

H: Yeah.
