When people take pictures on their vacations, researchers can use those photos to track animal migration. By uploading them to spotasharkusa.com anyone can help conservation biologists track and protect animals like the vulnerable sand tiger shark.
Scientists have used machine learning to identify the same sharks in pictures of a ship wreck site taken months apart. This was the first time sand tiger sharks were observed returning to the same place month after month, a behavior called site fidelity, and other sharks do it too.
Researchers have hypothesized that they return to the ship wrecks as a migratory rest stop or to reproduce. And this information could help the scientists protect these sites to keep the sharks from extinction.
