Alex enters
(Alex): Why is Frank Churchill's name written in big, black letters in our conference room?
(Emma): Because he's super-important.
(Alex): I gathered that, but why is he super-important to us?
(Emma): He's not coming to the wedding.
(Alex): I don't know if you know Frank, but he's kind of a busy guy.
(Emma): Whatever. Give me your phone.
(Alex): Why?
(Emma): No reason.
(Alex): Yeah, right... Sure. You know it's locked, right? Whoa! How do you know my code?
(Emma): I'm psychic. Now give it back.
(Alex): No!
(Emma): What, are you five? We have wedding to fix!
(Alex): Stop for one second! What does my phone have to do with fixing this wedding?
(Emma): You have Frank Churchill's contact, and I need to talk to him. Now, isn't that totally obvious?
(Alex): No, not really.
[Intro music plays]
(Emma): I need to tell Frank to come to this wedding so that Annie will marry Ryan.
(Alex): Yeah, that's better. You are aware that Frank owns several companies and is a stakeholder in half a dozen different enterprises, including several with your father. He's kind of busy.
(Emma): Irrelevant.
(Alex): Ha! Tell that to his investors!
(Emma): Are you going to help me, or are you going to let our company fail?
(Alex): You're just going to reach his assistant.
(Emma): That's a start.
(Alex): Oh, you're not going to have Harriet patch you through?
(Emma): I was going to take this myself, thank you very much. Do you have a problem with that?
(Alex): No! No, it's actually kind of nice to see you take the direct approach for once. You're usually so passive-aggressive; it's refreshing.
(Emma): Don't you have some business to develop?
(Alex): And you're back.
(Emma): Leave.
(Alex): Ha! Make me!
(Emma): Fine! Enjoy the show, Mr. Knightley.
[on the phone] Hello, I am Emma Woodhouse. I need to speak to Frank Churchill immediately. I understand Frank isn't taking calls at the moment and that he's an extremely busy man, but you have to understand. This is regarding a very sensitive family issue with Mr. Ryan Weston. Yes, your personal employment is at stake and you have strict instructions. I respect that, but, Michelle, I'm going to send you something. Just think about that, and hopefully we can help each other out. Thank you for your time.
(Alex): That was very anticlimactic.
(Emma): What were you expecting, yelling and screaming?
(Alex): Yeah, and some motherly insults. Those are usually so fun coming from you.
(Emma): *chuckles* Why don't you be a doll and take care of this for me?
(Alex): Uh, you have an assistant for that.
(Emma): Then stretch the legs! Wear in those new pants and give it to her.
(Alex): You want to send Frank's assistant a pair of Valentino sunglasses?
(Emma): Spring line, polarized. Very Emma Approved.
(Alex): By the way, has Annie even ever directly mentioned this whole Frank thing to you?
(Emma): No.
(Alex): And that doesn't bother you?
(Emma): She's just embarrassed about it.
(Alex): And how much do these sunglasses cost?
(Emma): Less talking, more action! Alex exits
So hard to find willing help these days. Always remember, when you want something from someone, to think of what they want first. And if you're lucky, their social media pages are public so you can see what things they like. This is how you make favors. But it's really not a favor to them, it's an obligation. Make people want to help you!
[Wink sound]
Harriet Enters
(Harriet): Hey, Emma? Um, Michelle, Mr. Churchill's assistant's on the phone.
(Emma): Sit! Learn! Take notes.
[answers the phone] Hello, Michelle. Lovely to hear from you! You did? Well, the efficiency of modern technology is amazing! I would love a direct line! Three-week retreat. Norway! Trout, ha. Specific. Unreachable. Sure, go ahead.
[to Harriet] She's connecting me!
(Harriet): Um, what are you going to say?
(Emma): What he needs to hear. It's ringing! Still ringing. Ah, voice-mail! *clears throat* [returns to speaking on the phone]
Hello, Frank. I am Emma Woodhouse. You may have heard of me. I work with your brother, Ryan. Anyway, I am calling in regards to his wedding. Please call me back.
I see you have declined your invitation, and I am aware you may be busy, but your lack of attendance is unacceptable. Please call me back so we can chat.
Look, Mr. Churchill, this is actually important! Ryan is important to you, and Annie is important to him. And she's important to me! You need to come to this wedding, or send a gift, or something! Please call me back immediately. [hangs up]
(Harriet): Great! So, now we just wait for him to call back, right?
(Emma): Maybe.
(Harriet): Uh, his assistant said he was unreachable. You did everything you could.
(Emma): Turn the camera off.
