EMMA: "In sum, the opening gala for the new farm-to-table restaurant Boxx was perfection. The event mirrored the restaurant's menu: a stimulating journey for the senses." Well, there you have it - rave reviews for our latest event. And well-deserved, I'd like to add. I guess I've gotten used to things coming together easily, but this one was an uphill battle. And not just because of the location. Anyway, it's over and done with, and what matters is that the client is satisfied, and judging by the reviews, I think it's safe to say that all parties involved were overjoyed with the results. All parties, that is, outside of this office. I don't know exactly why, but for some reason, everyone was really on edge last night. It was...weird. I am Emma Woodhouse, and I am ready to put a "lid" on this whole Boxx event.
(Intro music plays.)
EMMA: Now that everything is said and done, we can all get back to normal.
(Jane clears throat.)
EMMA: Jane! Hi! You finally hit a cue.
JANE: I need to talk to you about something important. Mind if I...?
EMMA: Oh, of course. Aren't you overseeing the load out today?
JANE: I was, but I needed to talk to you and I can't wait any longer.
EMMA: Okay, what is it?
JANE: When you first offered me the position here, I had two thoughts: one was that you and I united could really do some good. The other was that I wasn't sure if you were really serious about the things you said you wanted.
EMMA: I'm always serious.
JANE: Well, that's a point of view.
EMMA: What are you saying?
JANE: I really wanted things to work out here. I wanted it so badly that I ignored a lot of my better instincts.
EMMA: Look, if there's something you're unhappy with -
JANE: I am unhappy, for a lot of reasons. And you are definitely one of them.
EMMA: Me? What did I do?
JANE: I gave you the benefit of the doubt. I thought you truly cared about the causes you were helping and honestly, you've made me feel like a fool.
EMMA: Okay, maybe we should turn the cam -
JANE: No. You want to document? I certainly don't want to stand in the way.
EMMA: Okay...
JANE: Last night, I realized something. I need to stop trying to force things to work that are just not going to happen.
EMMA: I'm not sure I know exactly what we're talking about.
JANE: There are two kinds of people I come across in my line of work: those who truly believe that change starts with the individual, and those who want to act like they do.
EMMA: Listen, I know it hasn't been easy working here. New jobs are all about adjusting, but we'll figure this out!
JANE: I'm tired of spending my time on people who only talk the talk. My energy is better spent elsewhere.
EMMA: Jane, look, you're tired. I am tired, we're all overworked. You just need a few days off, maybe get a massage.
JANE: I'm taking that position that Caroline found for me.
EMMA: What? You don't want that!
JANE: You have no idea what I want! You don't know me! You've never - thank you so much for the opportunity. I'll be out by the end of the day.
(Jane leaves. Alex enters.)
ALEX: Emma, I need to speak with you.
EMMA: Can it wait? I am not having the best day.
ALEX: No, it can't. It's about last night.
EMMA: Can we please forget about it? Last night was an off night. Everyone has them.
ALEX: I wish that I could forget about it. I would love to forget about it, but unfortunately for us, I can't.
EMMA: Is this about the Maddy thing? Seriously, it was no big deal.
ALEX: No big deal? Emma, you showed zero compassion for a woman that's been nothing but kind to you your entire life.
EMMA: Okay, I think you're blowing this a little out of proportion. All I did was shed some light on the situation and protect the company.
ALEX: Is that what we're calling it now? You completely humiliated Maddy, you said her jams were disgusting in front of everyone.
EMMA: I had no choice! She came up to the owners and their families, pushing her crazy preserves on them. Alex, these people are five-star chefs and world-class gourmets. If anything, she embarrassed me!
ALEX: No, she learned that from you! You taught her to put herself out there and rise to her potential, and that's exactly what she was doing.
EMMA: She put our company's reputation at stake.
ALEX: Oh, that's bullshit. What about your reputation with the people closest to you, huh? How about that? Maddy's known you since you were a baby, and now you're laughing at her?
EMMA: I didn't laugh!
ALEX: No, Emma, you are a leader and you led those people to laugh at that poor woman.
EMMA: No, everyone wasn't laughing!
ALEX: Oh, that's right, I believe most people were horrified. It was just you and Frank that were laughing.
EMMA: Alex, you are being so unreasonable right now. It's over. It's done.
ALEX: Yeah, badly done, Emma. Look, if this is the way that you make the world better, I don't want to be any part of it.
(Alex gets up to leave.)
EMMA: Wait, where are you going?
ALEX: I'm leaving.
EMMA: When are you coming back?
ALEX: Maybe never.
EMMA: Wait, Alex! Alex, no, wait, please come back! Alex!
(Emma chases Alex. She comes back, crying.)
(Harriet enters.)
HARRIET: Emma? Emma, oh my gosh! Can I help? Do you need anything? What can I do?
EMMA: Just don't go. Just please don't leave me!
(Intro music plays.)
EMMA: Now that everything is said and done, we can all get back to normal.
