Emma: So last week was... hard. And a little out of character for me, but last week is gone, and I am done burying myself in self pity.

That doesn't mean I'm done being my own client. That just means I'm ready to take my self improvement to the next level. I am Emma Woodhouse, and this is step two of my comeback!

Harriet: Emma? Annie just called! She's going to be a bit late.

Emma: She's that mad, huh?

Harriet: What do you mean? She said she'd come down here for lunch.

Emma: Annie is never late. At her wedding I had to stop her or she'd beat Ryan to the altar. 

Harriet: Well, she didn't sound mad on the phone.. more like on edge.. She asked how you were doing a couple of times.

Emma: Oh my God!! She has bad news for me. What if she's heard from Alex? What if something's happened to him and that's why he hasn't called yet? Or what if it's Izzy? No, no no, wouldn't Izzy call me? What if it's the kids? (sighs desperately)

Annie: I promise, there's nothing wrong with anyone whose last name's Knightley.

Emma: Annie!! So happy to see you!

Annie: Good to see you too Emma! (to Harriet) Er, I thought you said she was fine today?

Harriet: She was..

Emma (almost crying): I'm sorry, I'm fine, just... really happy to see you. Oh, (to her baby bump) and you too!

Annie: You already said that...

Emma: Oh...

Harriet: Well I'm gonna go check on Maddy! 

(high heels sounding)

Emma: Thank you so much for coming in. I really want to apologize for the baby shower -

Annie (cutting in): It's water under the bridge, Emma. Don't worry about it. 

Emma: But I do worry! I disappointed you, how are you not mad at me?

Annie: Well I think there are enough people angry with you right now.

Emma: You are too good, Annie Weston.

Annie: Love means never having to say you're sorry.

Emma: But I am sorry. You are my best friend, and it's time I start treating you like that. 

Annie: Like what?

Emma: Like a friend. Not a client, not a vendor, a friend. 

Annie: Does this mean you're not going to try to throw me any more big flashy parties?

Emma: (nervous laugh) Oh, no promises! But they won't be out of this office! And I promise you won't have to make any more tarts or cakes or muffins for any event!

Annie: (relieved) Oh, deal!

(both laugh)

Emma: Wait, if you're not mad at me, why are you late?

Annie: Oh, that's what I'm here to tell you. Now you can be mad at me.

Emma: Not possible.

Annie: Frank came to see us this morning. 

Emma: Is this about him selling Richmond Corporation?

Annie: Um, yes and no.

Emma: Okay.. That was cryptic.

Annie: Frank and Jane were dating.

Emma: What!!! Frank and Jane?!

Annie: It's a surprise, I know, for Ryan and me too.

Emma: Wait, but when?! What? Argh! Woah! I cannot believe I was wrong again!

Annie: Wait, what do you mean?

Emma: Alex thought they were together, and I told him he was crazy.

Annie: Well... They're not together any more, but they met in London last Winter through friends of Jane.

(Emma gasps) Emma: The Dixons!

Annie: Exactly, but nobody had any idea.

Emma: Jane was working here and Frank's a friend; why keep it a secret?

Annie: Um, Emma..

Emma (interrupting): And why tell everyone now, after everything is over?

Annie: Well, the news of Frank selling his shares of Richmond is huge. People are going to ask about his motives. 

Emma: He's selling because of Jane?

Annie: He didn't say that, but the media's going to dig into his life. He wanted us to find out before the secret got out.

Emma: He didn't even tell his own brother?! 

Annie: And it was Jane's idea to hide their relationship. Frank's an important man with a certain reputation, and Jane..

Emma (interrupting again): ... Didn't want to be known as just Frank Churchill's girlfriend! Now, I totally get it. 

Annie: But that doesn't excuse his behavior. Or mine. 

Emma: Annie, do you still think I'm in love with Frank? 

Annie: Er... honestly, I thought the two of you like each other a lot!?

Emma: I told you! I like Frank, but just as a friend!

Annie: And you're sure?

Emma: Positive! Frank Churchill did not break my heart. He may have bruised my ego, but that's all, I promise. 

Annie: Emma, I'm happy to hear that. I felt badly pushing him on you. I'm sorry. 

Emma: Love means never having to say you're sorry, right? So Frank and Jane were dating for months? But he was flirting with me? (gasps) Poor Jane! No wonder she dumped him. 

Annie: Ooh, do you think it was her? 

Emma: If I know Jane even a little bit, she dropped him like a hot potato. 

Annie: You know who was the only one who knew..?

Emma: Who??!

Annie: Jane's aunt.

Emma: Maddy? Now I know I'm the most clueless person here. (laughs) Oh, oh! He sent her the computer!!

Annie: Yes, he did.

Emma: He totally played me! (disbelieving laugh). 

Annie: (taps on Emma's leg) Let's go out for some ice-cream. Forget about this for a while. 

Emma: Ooh, let's go out, but not for ice-cream. I've had enough of that! 

(loud footsteps leaving)

Emma: unintelligible as they leave the room (a lot of chocolate?)

(Alex's office)

Maddy, typing loudly: Emma Woodhouse! Are you ready for a quick books lesson of the day??

Emma: Absolutely ready, but first Maddy, I need to apologize for something. 

Maddy (chiding): Again with that? I told you there is nothing to apologize for any more.

Emma: No, no, it's for something different. Annie told me about Frank and Jane. 

Maddy: err, ah, erh, what about Frank and Jane??

Emma: Maddy, you don't need to pretend any more! Frank told Ryan and Annie came to tell me! 

Maddy, sighing with relief: Oh, thank God! ha ha ha ha! Oh, oh I guess if Frank is telling everyone, I can stop covering for them. Oh my God! I hate lying!! Hahaha.

Emma: (talking over Maddy's laughter) You're a great secret keeper. 

Maddy: No-one thought I could do it! Especially mum-ma; I told her (shouting) 'Muuh-mma! We have to be very discreet!' And she said: 'With all that lip-flapping it's a miracle you don't fly away!' 

(both laugh)

Emma: It must have been hard for you to keep it in for so long. 

Maddy: Oh, it was, especially because I didn't know why Jane wasn't shouting it there from the rooftops!! Frank Churchill is a fine young man. Well, she told me I had to keep quiet, so I did.

Emma: That's very noble of you Maddy, I'm sorry, I didn't think you could keep a secret.

Maddy: I told you to stop apologizing. 

Emma: Well if you won't accept my apology, will you please apologize to Jane on my behalf?

Maddy: To Jane?

Emma: She still doesn't want to talk to me. And I completely understand why, I mean my behavior with Frank was awful - we flirted, we had inside jokes..

Maddy: (interrupting): Hoo-ney, you didn't know he was unavailable.

Emma: But I did know he wasn't the man for me and that didn't stop me.

Maddy: Well I'm sure Jane blames Frank more than she blames you; there's a reason they broke up after all. 

Emma: Anyway, could you please apologize to Jane, and tell her that I'm sorry if I ever made her feel uncomfortable about Frank. 

Maddy: I'm sure that's not necessary, but I will. Anything for ma girl... Now, let's get to work?

Emma: (sighs) OK.

(to Emma's office)

Emma: So, I apologized to Annie; phase two of my self improvement complete. (strong finger click) And since apparently I don't have enough penance to do, Frank added another reason to feel guilty.

But, I've already apologized to Jane. Through Maddy. And to Maddy herself. The worst part is that Alex was right. (emotional) Again. (nervous laugh). Who would have thought the news of Frank and Jane dating would affect so many people. Who will be next? (sudden gasp!!) OHMYGOD, HARRIET!!
