Through photosynthesis, trees pull carbon out of our atmosphere and turn it into food, sugar. And into their bodies.
In the process, they give us oxygen and such more than 14% of the US carbon emission from our atmosphere every year. Bu there's only so much land to plant on. And so researchers and created Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage Systems, or DACCS, that don't take up as much ground as a forest.
Like trees, DACCS can draw CO2 from the atmosphere, but it can store the CO2 underground to use it later. The downside is that unless you're using solar panels, DACCS doesn't use the sun as the energy source so they rely on a different, external energy source.
Since trees need space and DACCS needs fuel, there is no perfect solution but using them both moves us in the right direction.
