Emma: Okay. What's being going on around here? What hasn't? The auction is just around the corner, and the lines will be too! Raising money for a great cause, everyone dresses up, and Jane Fairfax might even get a social life! Everybody gets a better life!
And speaking of Jane and laptop-gate, that girl most certainly covers her tracks. Not that I snuck into her office after hours. Haha that would be crazy.
Alex did not get her that laptop. I mean, he won't even spend more than $30 on a pair of khakis. He would never drop a few grand on a new computer for someone else. And even if he did get it for her, there's no way it would be a secret! It would be on the expense reports! On the books.
What am I even talking about? The idea of Alex and Jane together is the craziest, insanest, most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.
[Emma Approved Opening Theme]
Emma: But in my quest for personal growth, as you know, I have been working on listening. Just because an idea seems completely astronomically ludicrous, that does not mean I should immediately discount it. It's just worth a closer look. So I can get proof. And then prove Annie wrong!
Harriet? Will you send out an invite for an executive meeting at noon today? My office.
Harriet: Of course Emma.
Emma: It begins.
Alex: Isn't the meeting supposed to be in here?
Jane: That's what my calender said. Did it get moved?
Alex: Or Emma is just running late to her own meeting.
Jane: Well she's a very busy person.
Alex: Hey, it's Emma's world, we're all just living in it.
Jane: (laughs)
Alex: So...? How are you liking it here?
Jane: It's wonderful. Aside from, this.
Alex: Haha. You'll get used to it.
Jane: Birds get used to living in cages too. But that doesn't mean they shouldn't fly free.
Alex: You can certainly try to talk Emma out of it.
Jane: Do you want me to?
Alex: I wouldn't mind.
Jane: She's definitely head strong.
Alex: Yes, but you, are stubborn.
Jane: I'm going to chose to take that as a compliment.
Alex: You should! I remember when you petitioned the school district to offer vegan lunch options. Are you even vegan?
Jane: Everyone deserves equal access to healthy food options.
Alex: And that is exactly why you are here.
Jane: You want me to bring vegan-ism to the office?
Alex: No. Please don't. We already have enough strange pseudo alternative foods. You are here because you fight for what you believe in.
Jane: Thanks Alex.
Alex: Oh what do you know, Emma is running late. 'Harriet and I had a problem at the printers.'
Jane: Guess we'll have to reschedule.
Alex: Well this was a very productive meeting.
Jane: I feel like we accomplished a lot here.
Alex: I think I'm going to go get myself a cup of vegan coffee. Do you wanna come?
Jane: All coffee is vegan.
Alex: Not the way I like it.
Emma: Well, there you have it. I've seen for myself that there is nothing to see. Sure Alex and Jane are friendly with each other, and they have things in common, but it stops there! There are no sparks, no chemistry, no fireworks. Actually with those two, if you were waiting for sparks, you'd be out in the dark for a very long time. Alex obviously cares about her, and wants to see her do well. But so do I! It's just a professional courtesy.
Unfortunately, I still need proof. And that didn't give me anything definitive. The only thing left to do is to get an answer myself.
Alex: Oh, now look who decides to show up for the meeting.
Emma: There was a problem with the catalogue for the auction.
Alex: Harriet couldn't take care of?
Emma: Not this problem.
Alex: Okay. What was it?
Emma: It doesn't matter. But it gave you and Jane the chance to meet on your own.
Alex: We didn't get very much accomplished.
Emma: Really? I heard you were very productive.
Alex: And how did you hear that?
Emma: I just heard that you and a certain stubborn person walked down memory lane and then got coffee together.
Alex: Did you call a fake meeting so you could spy on us?
Emma: Why would I do that?
Alex: I don't know you tell me!
Emma: Well, I'm not one to gossip-
Alex: Ha!
Emma: -but there have been rumors.
Alex: About me an Jane.
Emma: Certain parties think you'd be really cute together.
Alex: So are Maddie Bates and your father, but that doesn't make them a couple.
Emma: Alex, be honest with me. Friend to friend. Do you like Jane?
Alex: Yes of course I like Jane. She's a very charming young woman. But, I could never date Jane.
Emma: Why not?
Alex: Because she's all business.
Emma: So are you.
Alex: Exactly. We'd be all work, and no play.
Emma: You'd be very productive. You'd do your taxes on the weekend and come up with profit projections over dinner.
Alex: Profit projections? That's what you think I do in my spare time?
Emma: You climb rocks. She can too.
Alex: Who thinks we're cute together?
Emma: Annie.
Alex: Great. Just what we need around here, another matchmaker.
Emma: Hey!
Alex: Look don't get me wrong, Jane is sweet and generous, and patient, kind and-
Emma: No, keep going, this is fun.
Alex: Look she has a lot of great qualities but I just don't, like like her.
Emma: Okay. Yes.
Alex: Did you win your bet?
Emma: Wha- I would never bet on- Yes I totally won the bet! Ha. But you still have to be willing to bid on Jane. Just in case. If she ended up with someone awful she would never forgive me.
Alex: Fine, but same goes for me. I don't know how to compete with 'Frank Churchill and his fancy hair cut.'
Emma: Hey. Not everyone can pull off a $10 haircut.
Alex: So you're saying that I can?
Emma: Don't get too full of yourself.
Alex: You just said that I have better hair than Frank, right?
Emma: Okay...
Alex: That's what you just said. I heard it.
Emma: Sometimes, the only way to know for sure is to ask. And I'm glad I did. Annie just let her imagination run away with her. It happens to the best of us. Still nothing a little open communication couldn't solve. See Jane? Openness! See how that works? Communication. You should try it sometime!
Still can't hit a cue!
