Cockroaches can do a great human impression and run on two legs. And it's not just to mock us while they escape our attacks. Running on two legs is faster, easier on their little brains, and more energy efficient. And here are some possible explanations for why.
Not all cockroach legs are created equal. Some of them are shorter and basically create more drag than they are worth when the roach needs to reach high speeds. At those speeds, their nervous system would be overloaded trying to control three pairs of legs, so it cuts down to just one pair.
And they choose the pair that uses the energy most efficiently, their rear legs.
