Hank: Hello and welcome to another edition of Truth or Fail. Today is May 5th or as they say in Spanish
Michael: Cinco de Mayo.
Hank: May 5th is also Hanko De Mayo, indeed it is my birthday and to celebrate I’m going to give you all the gift of knowledge. Specifically, I want you to learn more about Cinco de Mayo because, I’m just going to take a guess here and say that for all the millions of Americans that celebrate today by drinking excessive quantities of Corona and Margaritas, not many of you actually know what it is you are celebrating. Today we will change that.
Round number one: Origins
Fact number one: Cinco de Mayo is commonly mistaken for Mexican Independence Day which is celebrated on September 16th and marks the end of Spanish rule in 1810. May 5th actually commemorates a brief but brutal uprising by the Spanish in 1833 that culminated in a week long battle but ended once again in victory for Mexico on May 5th.
OR
Fact number two: Cinco de Mayo actually celebrates a Mexican victory against France on May 5th 1862 when nearly 8000 French troops were defeated by only 4000 Mexicans near the town Puebla, about a hundred miles outside of Mexico City.
