HARRIET: Here's the list of all the bachelors and bachelorettes for the auction.
EMMA: I see all my contacts are in. Why is there a question mark next to Frank's name?
HARRIET: Well...we don't have his photo, so I wasn't sure whether or not to include him in the catalog.
EMMA: I thought he brought it in the last time he was here.
HARRIET: I searched for it this morning, but he never gave us one.
EMMA: Huh. This auction is really important to Frank, why would he forget this tiny detail?
HARRIET: Well, he seemed in a hurry when he left Jane's office.
EMMA: He's a busy man.
HARRIET: And I asked Jane, but she didn't know anything about any photo.
EMMA (forced laughter): Of course she didn't. (Pretending to be Jane) I'm Jane Fairfax and I have no information whatsoever about anything that may be of interest at all.
(Intro.)
EMMA (normal voice): What? She lived in London.
HARRIET: Emma, are you sure you like Jane?
EMMA: Of course I do! She's competent, efficient, hard-working. But I've tried to talk to her a few times this week, and she shuts me down. She tells me nothing.
HARRIET: She told me she'd write the intro speech for you if you'd like.
EMMA: I'll do it myself, thank you. Why wouldn't she ask me personally?
HARRIET: You were in your meeting with Mr. Churchill.
EMMA: It wasn't a meeting, it was a...conversation. So, you and Jane are becoming really good friends then.
HARRIET: I'm just helping.
EMMA: Harriet, it's okay. I'm sure she appreciates having a friend in the office.
HARRIET: Well, she gets along with Alex.
EMMA: Alex is a good guy, but it's always good to have girlfriends.
ANNIE (knocks): Am I interrupting?
EMMA: Annie! I haven't seen you in forever!
ANNIE: Well, you have been kinda busy with all of the restructuring and the hiring.
EMMA: I still have time for my friends, though.
ANNIE: Oh, speaking of which, your new friend Frank gave me a photo for you, for the auction...?
EMMA: See! He didn't forget!
ANNIE: He's very sorry about not bringing it in person. He had to leave town unexpectedly.
EMMA: Shocker.
HARRIET: Will he be back for the auction?
EMMA: He will. Harriet, scan this and send it to the printing house.
HARRIET: Oh, right away. (Leaves.)
ANNIE: So, tell me, how's Emma Approved's new business direction going? Do you like it?
EMMA: Immensely, it's great to feel like we're actually making the world better.
ANNIE: And how are you liking the new hire?
EMMA (takes deep breath): I like Jane enough, but I feel like she likes everyone better than me.
ANNIE: I'm sure that's not true.
EMMA: She spends all of her time with Alex, going over boring businessy stuff. No surprise there, I guess.
ANNIE: Oh, so Alex and Jane are spending a lot of time together?
EMMA: Yes, it's their job.
ANNIE: Speaking of, I didn't see Alex in his office when I came in.
EMMA: Uh, he's out to lunch with Jane.
ANNIE: Is he?
EMMA: Wait, Jane and Alex? (Laughs.) Annie, how can you think that?
ANNIE: It's from spending too much time with you. You're a bad influence.
EMMA: I would never match Alex and Jane. That's crazy.
ANNIE: Think about it. They spend a lot of their time together, they share similar tastes and hobbies.
EMMA: That doesn't mean anything. Relationships can't be born when people are too similar.
ANNIE: Yeah, but you have to have some common ground. Shared goals, time spent together. Isn't that what you write about in your blog? So I have an idea. Why don't you use your bet from last fall and set Alex up on a date with Jane?
EMMA: What? No. No way. Besides, I already used my bet to make him participate in the auction.
ANNIE: Then just suggest it to him.
EMMA: Can you imagine a date between Alex and Jane? Him picking her up from Maddy's house and having to listen to Maddy's stories while Jane gets ready? (Laughing) Poor Alex.
ANNIE: Alex likes Maddy, they get along very well.
EMMA: Then they would have the least romantic date of all. (Imitating Alex) It was such a good idea to leave the car at home and take the subway, even though the stop was a mile away from the restaurant. (Imitating Jane) Well, that's why I wore my sensible shoes. (Normal voice) I'm still working on my Jane impression.
ANNIE: Don't quit your day job.
EMMA: Besides, I'm not sure that Jane is entirely available at the moment.
ANNIE: Oh really?
EMMA: This is not gossiping.
ANNIE: Oh, of course not.
EMMA: But, last week Jane got a new laptop. A very expensive laptop, and I think it's a gift from a secret admirer.
ANNIE: But a laptop is not a very romantic gift.
EMMA: But it came with flowers. Flowers are romantic.
ANNIE: But a laptop? Which is more useful than, when say, coming to work.
EMMA: Well, maybe Jane's secret admirer knows how important her job is to her.
ANNIE: Maybe Jane's secret admirer values efficiency as much as she does.
EMMA (laughing): I see what you're doing, Annie Weston-Taylor. And you have no basis! You can't just invent an idea and run with it.
ANNIE: Oh, because you never do that.
EMMA: Well, the difference is I know when two people are well matched, and Alex and Jane are not.
ANNIE: If you say so. Don't hate the player, Emma, hate the game.
EMMA: What was that?
ANNIE: I don't know. Ryan says it all the time.
EMMA: Clearly! (Both laughing) But you're wrong and I will prove it.
ANNIE: Okay, you want to make another bet?
EMMA: Remember, I always win.
(Outro.)
