Hank: "To control your dog, you need to establish yourself as the dominant alpha in the social group."

No, this is all wrong. It's a really popular myth that came from a poorly designed study on WOLVES... from the 1940s!

Basically, a researcher put a bunch of different wolves from different packs into a group together - so just like a wildly uncomfortable situation for them - and a hierarchy emerged with an "alpha wolf" on top controlling resources. So people assume that dogs would also do this, and that you - the owner - should be the "alpha."

This just isn't a thing. First, wolves aren't even like this in the wild; they live in big, pretty consistent family groups where leadership is grown into based on things like personality and seniority. And also, domestication has made dogs behave very differently from wolves, as you might have noticed.

Actual research on actual dogs from not the 1940s indicates that the best way to train a dog is to reward them for good behavior. Imagine!
