There's a new male birth control in town! Male birth control options are pretty limited, especially compared to what's available for females. Basically, the only options out there to stop sperm are barrier methods like condoms, or more recently, vasectomies. There're some hormonal options being studied as well, but they take months to be effective and require a lot of upkeep. But, there's a whole new drug that's a temporary, fast-acting male birth control called a sAC inhibitor. Yes, really. See, sperm cells are activated by soluble adenylyl cyclase, aka sAC, which allows them to swim. So without sAC, those sperm can't swim to fertilize any eggs. Studies of this birth control in mice have shown that it's effective after just 30 minutes of an injected dose, and it wears off after just a few hours, making it a great option for people who don't want to commit to a vasectomy.
