some cats know their names, each other's names, and your name. Researchers cuddled cats in front of screens displaying pictures of another cat they live with. While the cat looked at the picture, audio of the pictured cat's name would play. But sometimes Catrick Swayze's picture would be paired with Cat Damon's name. And in those mismatched cases, Kitty Purry would stare at the screen for longer. The study authors concluded that Kitty Purry knows Catrick Swayze’s name and was expecting to hear it, so when she heard Cat Damon's name, she needed a second to reconcile the mismatch. They got similar results when they tested pictures of people in the household, with longer stairs from cats in larger households. House cats could pair names with faces whether it's a stranger's voice or a human. And these results were compared against controls from cat cafes. Cafe cats regularly see new humans and have new cats joining them. So, their environments aren't set up for them to learn names, and cats don't stare longer at mismatched pairings.
