But birds have a totally different one - the "syrinx" - located further down and closer to the lungs. And it's split into two halves, which they can control independently, basically harmonizing with themselves.

And here's what's really weird: Evolution rarely comes up with something new; it tinkers with existing structures, like how your hand used to be a fishy fin. But scientists have determined that the syrinx is something totally new in evolution, nothing like it existed before or had a prior use. So, it's a brand new way of singing pretty songs.
