More and more we’re noticing “vintage” be used to describe “thrift” but, PSA: thrift prices ≠ vintage prices. Even thrift prices aren’t what they used to be tbh. 😭 The whole appeal of digging through racks of other people’s discarded clothes is that every once in a while you find an absolute GEM for $12. If everything vaguely old or secondhand is now “vintage” and priced accordingly…kind of defeats the point.
Also, shopping for secondhand clothing while endowed with a little yummy ✨extra✨ is not talked about enough. Plus size is generally considered 14+, but even finding cute secondhand pieces in a 10 or 12 is cause for fatigue.
It’s already a treasure hunt to find something good, which, ofc ofc, is part of the fun. But that treasure hunt gets significantly harder when most of the treasure was made for bodies smaller than yours. And if you can make a piece work, sometimes that means buying something larger because it’s the only viable option and then paying another $30, $50 to have it professionally altered just to fit, (not even considering tailoring done just for stylistic preference). It’s just a lot of math 😩
None of this means secondhand shopping isn’t worth doing. We LOVE the hunt. We’ve said so a few times in our past posts. But “just thrift it!” gets tossed around as this universally cheap, sustainable alternative to buying new when the experience is wildly different depending on your size. Some people get to walk into a thrift store and shop the whole store. Other people are shopping across only six racks with a prayer and whatever their tailor can salvage
