Are we a substrate on which they exist? What happens if they continue to get more complex? One thing that is different is they do not compete inside of the ecosystem...or maybe a language is a whole ecosystem and individual units of the language do compete...sometimes outcompeting each other, which is what happens when words survive while others fall out of use.
Dangit...I should've thought of that before I finished the video....
Maybe languages aren't alive but WORDS are? Is a language a superorganism of words?
Probably best not to worry about it too much.
