Scientists just figured out this seemingly normal plant is carnivorous, and it's a pretty big deal because only eleven meat-eating plants have been discovered since Darwin.
This cute little plant is called Triantha Occidentalis, and it's unique for the sticky hairs on its stem. At first, scientists thought that these hairs were a defense mechanism cuz they're right next to the flowers.
But when scientists put fruit flies on these hairs, the fruit flies just stuck. And the sticky stuff doesn't just keep the flies from flying away. It has enzymes on the hairs that help digest the flies, so these plants are very much on the offensive.
But it's not their fault! Carnivorous plants often can't get their nutrients from the soil, which forces them to turn to bugs. So if you're sick of pesky flies, you might want one of these plants around.
