AI can now read ultrasounds.

Since AI is good at taking giant data sets and organizing them by similarity, it's perfect for analyzing millions of ultrasound images. And research shows that AI programs can be taught to tell the difference between pathological and normal scan images.

This could have global implications, especially when it comes to maternal mortality. Worldwide, about 800 people die of preventable pregnancy and childbirth-related causes every day. Prenatal screenings can identify problems during pregnancy that could be life-saving, but many people in the world don't have access to this kind of healthcare.

So using AI to help users analyze their scans could enable more people to have access to potentially life-saving screenings. Plus, new portable ultrasound probes make it possible to conduct a scan from your phone, meaning that getting scans done and analyzed will be faster and cheaper than ever.
