Saltwater taffy might not sound very appetizing. After all, you're specifically not supposed to ingest saltwater. That's like, stuck-on-a-desert-island rule number one. But saltwater taffy is not salty, or watery, or made from saltwater at all. So what's the deal? The story goes that in 1883, a storm hit the Atlantic City Boardwalk, flooding several candy shops in the process. When a young girl went up to a candy store counter after the flood asking for a treat, the candy man sarcastically told her that all they had left was saltwater taffy. The name stuck and here we are, 140-some-odd years later. For the record, saltwater taffy is mostly sugar, cornstarch, and corn syrup, among other things. Occasionally, there is salt listed in the ingredients.
