While the word "mummy" may conjure up an image of King Tut (or a 1999 Brendan Fraser action/adventure movie), ancient Egyptians were far from the only culture that mummified their dead. Around the world, and across millennia, people used different techniques that could preserve a body; and sometimes, it wasn't even intentional.









UPDATE: On September 15, 2025, a paper published in the journal PNAS announced the discovery of the new oldest intentional mummies ever found, located in Southeastern Asia. You can read the paper here: https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2515103122
