If you went to a show on the Eras tour but don't really remember it, you're not alone. And there's research to back up why there's a "blank space" in your memory of that Taylor Swift show.

Niba: So, there's a lot of research into how our memories work, and part of what's going on here might be that you were so excited about the concert that it ended up changing how your memories formed.

You don't need science to tell you that emotion affects your memory, but what it does is way more complicated than you might assume. Sometimes, intense emotions can create these, like, vivid and long-lasting memories called "flashbulb" memories. But they can also create what's called "tunnel memory." So, in an emotionally intense moment, your brain is really busy, and to compensate, it captures what's most relevant to your emotional experience, which means often sidelining the specifics of the event itself. But also, many aspects of memory vary pretty widely from person to person, which explains why your friend who was standing right next to you might remember what Taylor did on stage really clearly, whereas your memory just consists of more... vibes.
