When a sea turtle meets a jellyfish, the encounter can sometimes end in tears. But not because anybody got stung! Sea turtles have a totally different adaptive reason to cry after meeting - or rather, eating - jellyfish.

Savannah: Jellyfish make turtles cry. But it's not because they get stung. In fact, turtles might not be bothered by jellyfish stings at all because they're armored on the outside *and* the inside. They basically have spiky fingernails coating their throats that make it easier to eat things like jellyfish. And *eating* the jellies is what makes turtles cry. Turtles eat a lot of those little guys, but a jellyfish-forward diet is really high in salt, and to get rid of that extra salt, the turtles cry it out. They even have supersized salt glands to make more tears. So next time you're feeling low, remember that crying can have real benefits for your body - especially if you're a sea turtle.
