2012 will indeed be London's third go at the Olympics, having done it previously in 1908 and 1848. However the 1908 games were in fact scheduled to take place in Rome but since Mount Vesuvius erupted in 1906 they were kind of a bit preoccupied with a volcano than they were you know throwing discus and stuff.
