Savannah: Tuberculosis is a complex disease, but new research shows we can fight it faster. Even though it's treatable, TB kills almost 3,500 people every day, and treating it can sometimes be really complicated.
One of the major hurdles in curing tuberculosis is the length of treatment. The World Health Organization's recommended "short course" of antibiotics takes six months to complete, which can grueling.
But newer research suggests that non-severe tuberculosis in children can be treated with the standard antibiotics in just four months, and other studies have found similar outcomes for certain kinds of TB in adults, too. Part of the reason is that the drugs we use have gotten WAY better since the WHO set the six-month guidance. This means that places with limited resources can treat more people and in a shorter period of time.
