(Alex): Were you just checking out my ass?
(Emma): Yeah, you've been wearing those khakis for five years. Get a new pair already.
(Alex): This is the thanks I get for going along with your documentary charade.
(Emma): Don't worry I'll thank you in my award speech. So what's the big news? I'm busy.
(Alex): Oh yeah, did you fix Annie's wedding?
(Emma): What do you think I'm busy with?
(Alex): May I ask what your plan is?
(Emma): Just some preliminary research on the couple. You know social activity, bank accounts, phone records.
(Alex): You have access to their bank accounts and their phone records?
(Emma): Yes.
(Alex): And they know that you have access?
(Emma): So...um... d'yeah. What's the big news? Tell me. Busy, busy.
(Alex): Well, I've found her
(Emma): Her who? Mr. Knightly are you asking me for dating advice?!
(Alex): You would like that wouldn't you?
(Emma): So very much. Harriet Smith, double major, highly motivated.
(Alex): Emma Woodhouse, meet your new assistant.
[Intro music]
(Emma): So where is this Harriet from?
(Alex): Oh, you remember this stack of resumes applying for your criminally vacant assistant position?
(Emma): Is that what that is?
(Alex): Well I figured I would save you some time and I went through all of these already and this is by no doubt the best one.
(Emma): I don't need an assistant
(Alex): Ha! On what planet?
(Emma): I am completely self-sufficient. I don't need any help.
(Alex): Says the woman who set up a company with her dad's money and me to do all of the actual business work.
(Emma): Whatever gets you to sleep at night.
(Alex): Interview her and hire her.
(Emma): Are you forcing her on me? This is so unlike you.
(Alex): No, no. Think of this as my gift to you, to make your life better.
(Emma): Uh-huh, Is she like your spy? Your Trojan horse? Is she going to murder me in my sleep?
(Alex): Okay, stop. You're scaring me.
(Emma): One day Mr.Knightly I will return this favor. Think of it as my gift to you.
Okay, I'll admit this Harriet Smith has got a pretty strong resume with a video application! Very Emma approved. And she has degrees in marketing and library science. Who majors in library science? She's probably really good at researching stuff. That would be useful and I could really use a good white chocolate latte.
Anyway, I'm not one for formal interviews. Let's see how she handles herself.
[Phone ringing]
(Harriet- on phone): Hello
(Emma): Hello, is this Harriet... Smith?
(Harriet): Yes, who is this?
(Emma): I am Emma Woodhouse
(Harriet): Oh... oh my god...I didn't know you were going to call me.
(Emma): That's the point. Do you have a few minutes to answer some questions?
(Harriet): Um, sure. I'm driving though.
(Emma): Oh, that's way better! Why don't you just come into the offices?
(Harriet): Uh, okay?
(Emma): I'll see you in an hour.
(Harriet): Wait, now?
(Emma): No Harriet, right now I'm very busy. But an hour would be perfect. Unless that's gonna be a problem?
(Harriet): Um no, I don't think...but I cou-
(Emma): Great, sixty minutes- starting now. Oh and could you pick me up a white chocolate latte, non-dairy please.
(Harriet): okay, sure. I mean, but I don't know where your offices are.
(Emma): I have faith in you Harriet. Drive safe!
So working at Emma Approved isn't just for anyone, you have to be smart, resourceful, clever and willing to do whatever it takes to... well, you know. Oh and have a great smile. So if this Harriet Whats-her-name has what it takes we'll find out in 54 minutes.
[54 Minutes Later]
[Harriet knocking]
(Emma): Come in.
(Harriet): Hi Miss Woodhouse
(Emma): You must be Harriet
(Harriet): That's me! It's an honor to meet you.
(Emma): You're welcome! Come sit down next to me. Wave hello to the people.
(Harriet): There are people?
(Emma): There will be.
(Harriet): Okay, hi people.
(Emma): Did you bring me what I asked for?
(Harriet): Yeah, white chocolate latte.
(Emma): Why are there two cups?
(Harriet): Oh well I couldn't remember which kind of non-dairy milk you wanted so I brought some options
(Emma): Well I prefer almond milk. Most places don't have that option.
(Harriet): I know I remember you tweeted once that "almond milk was the new soy milk." So I did some research and went to a cafe that had it.
(Emma): Mm, delicious. So, Harriet, why do you want to work here?
(Harriet): Because what you're doing here is amazing, you're bettering the world one life at a time, I think it's noble and inspiring.
(Emma): It is, but this job isn't easy. It's hard work, long hours, and we do everything it takes for our clients.
(Harriet): We make their lives better.
(Emma): Exactly. Now some of the things you do around here may seem a bit unorthodox but remember we always do what's best.
(Harriet): That won't be a problem Miss Woodhouse. You can count on me. I would do anything for this job.
(Emma): I like you Harriet, I'm gonna give you a shot. Think of this as a trial run.
(Harriet): Oh my god... thank you, thank you. I promise I won't let you down. When do I start?
(Emma): Right now. Bring that latte to Mr. Knightly.
(Harriet): Okay, right away.
(Emma): Great. Um, be sure to accidentally spill it onto his khakis. [ding] Just a bit.
(Harriet): Um, but won't that ruin them?
(Emma): That's the point Harriet. Do you know why? Think about it.
(Harriet): Um... because its whats best for Mr. Knightly?
(Emma): Exactly. Now less thinking, more doing. Off you go, go.
[Outro music plays]
(Emma): Yeah, you've been wearing those khakis for five years. Get a new pair already.
