Often, when it comes to splitting the bill or handling expenses on the group trip, the main issue isn’t typically people not wanting to pay their friends back. It’s that it’s not made to be a particularly seamless fix and the frustrations resulting from that leave people feeling like they need to walk on eggshells. So, how to protect your wallet AND still have fun at your next dinner with your besties or girls’ trip?

Things to figure out first -

1. Decide whether you’re willing to front the money at all. If having $500–$2,000 tied up waiting for reimbursements would stress you out, don’t volunteer to put the Airbnb, rental car, or group dinner on your card. Protect your peace before protecting the points.

2. Determine your pay back timeline. Do you prefer getting paid at the end of the trip (or dinner) in one lump sum OR at the end of each day/meal. Really think about what you can afford to do (financially AND mentally) that will ensure you still have a good time.

3. Decide your budget before everyone else’s spending influences yours.

What to say BEFORE the check comes:

1. Ooh, before we get too deep into vacation mode—how do we want to handle shared expenses? Does everybody have a working Venmo, Apple Cash, or Zelle?
2. Let’s save ourselves the group-chat math later! Let’s keep a shared note with expenses. It makes settling up later so much easier.

What to say AFTER the check was paid:

1. Figured I’d send this while I was thinking about it! I know post-trip life gets hectic.
2. Tiny bit of life admin! 😊 Sending this over while I’m catching up on everything else.

What to say when they take TOO LONG to repay:

1. Thought I’d send this now before my statement closes instead of trying to remember three weeks from now!
2. Hey! Following up on this so I can wrap up my budget for the month.
3. Just making sure this doesn’t get lost in the post-trip chaos!

Free Resources -

Apps like Tab, Split Mobile, and Splitwise are great resources for providing pictures of receipts, selecting the stuff each individual ordered/used, and getting paid back directly. And no, none of them are paying us to talk about them ;)
