Most birds either walk of hop, but not both. So what separates the walkers form the hoppers? Small birds tend to hop more than large birds because its more energy effective. But larger birds also hop and when they do, their bigger muscles let them hop farther. Another consideration is that many hopping birds are tree-dwellers because hopping is a good way to get through dense branches, but habitat might be only part of the explanation. Birds with necks that don't rotate very much tent to hop to quickly see in other directions. And over generations, hopping changes their pelvis shape to produce enough force to hop. So basically when a bird's anatomy is adapted to living in trees, that body plan is also better suited to hope than to walk.
