Hank Green: Hello and welcome to SciShow Talk Show, the day on SciShow where we talk to interesting people about interesting stuff. We're talking to Brit Garner today. Brit Garner, researcher of various biology-type things, but also a host with me on SciShow Psych -

Brit Garner: Yes!

HG: - and host of a new thing called Nature League, which we'll talk about a little bit today as well. But first, let's talk about your research! How... is... it? See, I kinda get what you do, but it's pretty new.

BG: In general, my background is conservation genetics and that's what I did up until about a year an a half ago when I got into big data analytics; we happen to have a program, like a certificate program at the university. So it's basically me and 13 undergrad guys majoring in computer science and me being like, "How do we apply it to elephants?"

HG: This is the right way to go about it! I love this! Where you're like, "I have built an area of expertise and they have too, I'm gonna go get that one and see how they fit together - and eventually they will."

BG: See, it's interesting because whenever you try to apply a new tool to an old idea, you find out that there aren't many people doing it. And so that whole idea of that literature review and like, "Let me see everything that's been done!" and you're like, "Oh my God, no one has done this." So I'm either an idiot -

HG: Yeah, I could call that guy - there's like the one - he's like 24, he's been doing it for 6 months.

BG: And he lives in The Netherlands and I was like "Okay, great!" Yeah, so there is a little bit of like, "Am I crazy to think in this way that is so not linear with the way we usually do this or are we onto something?" And I don't know the answer to that.
