Punching holes in your lawn can be good for it. Over time, soil can get compacted by human machines or other things that trek on top of it, which is pretty bad for the soil. Because it gets pretty dense to the point that some plants can't grow their roots as long or suck up as much water, but if you aerate your lawn, you can help it when you punch holes in it. You're helping plants exchange gases like oxygen and carbon dioxide in a process called soil aeration while you are aerating your lawn. You're also loosening the soil, so water can get in easily while also cutting the plant's roots to promote their growth, so if you want to keep your lawn healthy, punch holes in it.
