These spiders can catapult themselves into the air in a split second. They can store energy in their legs and almost instantly release it as their legs extend. That hydraulic pressure lets them boing into a spring-loaded vault at up to 88.2 centimeters per second.

Now some animals use these super fast movements to grab a snack, but these spiders use them to avoid being one, and not for the reasons you might think. The orb weaver launches himself off of his partner immediately after sex so that she does not eat him.

In a 2022 study, all of the males that used this technique survived.  But when researchers blocked the launch, they were all eaten. So yeah, is a life or death yeet. But those stakes don't stop the males from coming back for more. They usually bungee away on a silk line that brings them right back to the female's web for up to six more rounds.
