Naked mole rats are weird. And not just because of the way they look. They can move their front teeth independently and 25% of their entire muscle mass is just their jaws, all because they dig tunnels with their mouths. They live in cooperative colonies, with a broad queen who is the only breeding female of the entire group. And they can survive without oxygen for up to 18 minutes. But one of the weirdest things about naked mole rats is their age! They can live up to 5 times longer than other mammals of their size, with captive naked mole rats regularly living into their late 20s. The oldest captive naked mole rat turned 39 last year. That's weird! And they don't show many of the normal signs of aging. Like, their bones stay strong and healthy when they hit these record-busting ages. Even their cells don't age normally - they don't have a limit on cell division and they're able to repair DNA mutations that accumulate with age and contribute to old-age related illness. I guess to be a naked mole rat would be nice and like I said, weird!
