Welcome to Crash Course: Futures of AI! Our host Kousha Navidar is here to guide you through the ins and outs of our potential AI futures.
AI is changing FAST so rather than doing a full Crash Course series of 12+ episodes, we’ve prepared a mini-series of just the basics. Crash Course will never tell you what to think and we’re not the type of organization that responds to breaking news in real time. Instead, we’re here to offer a zoomed-out foundation upon which to base your own opinions as you continue to learn from other outlets about the world that’s changing around us.
Crash Course: Futures of AI will cover:
-What even is AI? What’s the history of this thing and how quickly has it evolved to what exists today?
-How could AI transform society? Will AI cause the next Industrial Revolution, and what might that mean for workers?
-How powerful could AI become? How do we measure the progression of AI? What are the consequences we’re already seeing, and what might be the future consequences of unchecked AI development?
-How might powerful AI cause harm? We’ll touch on misinformation, surveillance, authoritarianism, and (unfortunately,) more.
-How could AI be governed? What are the potential approaches for controlling AI both nationally and internationally?
P.S. Wondering if we used AI to create this series? Nope! Every Complexly video is lovingly, painstakingly human-made.

[0:00] Kousha Navidar: Ok, preview for Crash Course: Futures of AI. How should it start?
[0:06] "CC-GPT": “Welcome to Crash Course: Futures of AI, where we explore the world-changing innovations of artificial intelligence.”
[0:11] Kousha Navidar: Okay, that’s…fine. But let’s see if we can make it funnier.
[0:16] "CC-GPT": “Where we explore the world-changing innovations that artificial intelligence is dragging to our doorstep like an enthusiastic robot puppy who doesn’t know whether it brought you a pizza or hacked your bank account.”
[0:27] Kousha Navidar: Okay, okay, now try it like a hard-boiled private eye in a detective novel.
[0:33] CC- GPT: “The name’s Tech—Private Tech. I’ve seen a lot in my time, but nothing prepared me for this new wave of thinkin' machines knocking on humanity’s door asking questions we ain’t ready to answer.”
[0:45] Kousha Navidar: Okay, now try it as a cowboy in an old Western–
[0:48] *record scratch*
[0:50] Kousha Navidar: Uh, my producer is telling me I’m taking up “expensive filming time.” And they’re probably right. So let’s get into it. Hi, I’m Kousha Navidar.
I’m a former math teacher, speechwriter, Google tech-bro, and current host on public radio. And now, I’m so excited to be your– not artificial, very human– guide to Crash Course: Futures of AI. Now, with AI, there’s a lot to talk about, and we can’t cover all of it. In this five episode miniseries, we’ll focus on how AI could advance, just how powerful it might get, what that could mean for human society, and how to prevent the malevolent robot takeover. I’m ready!
Even the best human minds aren’t totally sure how it’s all gonna go down just yet. But we are sure AI has the potential to make our society more advanced– and also to spread fake news, decimate the job market, exacerbate wealth inequality, and even prop up authoritarian rulers across the globe. And that puts scientists, political leaders, and our whole society in the pretty tricky position of having to react to something that hasn’t actually happened yet.
But one thing is pretty certain: if we don’t start predicting, and preparing, for the future of AI now, things could look a lot less like Baymax from Big Hero 6, and a lot more like HAL from Space Odyssey. So will AI be a force of good? Or will it reinforce our human evils?
Join us on Crash Course: Futures of AI to decide. We good? Alright, now read the whole thing back to me like a cowboy. Crash Course Futures of AI was produced in partnership with the Future of Life Institute.
This episode was filmed at our studio in Indianapolis, Indiana and was made with the help of all these nice people. If you want to help keep Crash Course free for everyone, forever, you can join our community on Patreon.
