Great news - there's more great white sharks near Cape Cod than ever! I know, that doesn't sound awesome if you're a swimmer, but it's an awesome sign for the marine ecosystems.

Niba: Great news! Great white sharks are repopulating the Earth. Okay, well, that might not sound great if you like swimming in the ocean, but it's awesome news for our ecosystem.

Like human tourists, great whites enjoy the summer waters off of Cape Cod. That eastern edge of Cape Cod is a coastal aggregation site, which means sharks come from all over to mingle and eat seals - specifically, gray seals, which were also once beloved by human hunters.

Cape Cod's gray seals were regionally extinct by the 1960s, but the 1972 Marine Mammal Protection Act helped them to recover. And today, there are over 30,000, and that's helped Cape Cod become the largest known great white aggregation site for seal-eaters. Plus, places like this make it easy for scientists to study shark population. And data shows the shark's numbers have been rising for four years, indicating an upward trend of ecological recovery.

All in all, a pretty "great" recovery.
